At Vachira Phuket Hospital, one of the main hospitals in the popular province of Phuket, unpaid bills amount to around 10 million baht (€265,000) each year. According to its director, Weerasak Lorthongkham, the hospital is forced to absorb these costs for tourists who arrive without adequate insurance.

Most cases involving substance abuse or motorcycle accidents drain hospital resources. In early 2023, over 500 scooter accidents involving tourists were reported in Phuket in just the first two months.

Dr Lorthongkham cited the case of a Russian tourist who suffered a serious spinal injury in a motorcycle accident and required long-term care. Unable to contact the patient’s family, the hospital ended up covering the cost of treatment and repatriation, which exceeded one million baht.

Embassies and consulates generally treat such cases as personal expenses and refuse to cover the bills.

According to the Bangkok Post, the authorities are now assessing the full scale of the issue. Somruk Jungsaman, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Public Health, said that clear data is needed to design appropriate measures. He added that “both the level of insurance and payment mechanisms will be discussed with relevant agencies”.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, chairman of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, told the Bangkok Post that Thailand had long prioritised attracting tourists while leaving related pressures unaddressed.

The issue is gaining urgency amid broader concerns about the sustainability of tourism. Although Thailand remains one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, arrivals fell last year for the first time in a decade outside of the pandemic, dropping from around 35 million in 2024 to 32.9 million in 2025 amid security concerns and regional instability.

Thailand has already attempted to address the issue in the past. In 2019, it introduced insurance requirements for long-stay visitors over 50 after unpaid foreign medical bills totalled around 500 million baht (€13 million). The authorities are also revisiting an earlier proposal for a 300 baht (€8) fee on air arrivals, which would partly fund basic medical coverage and tourism infrastructure. The idea is still under cabinet review.

Thailand would not be the first country to take this step: Argentina, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Schengen Area countries already have similar rules. Japan is also considering such measures after reporting unpaid medical bills totalling more than 61 million yen (€320,000) in 2024.

For now, however, no law has been passed, and no final timeline or system has been confirmed.

• Call emergency services on 1669 if severe symptoms such as breathing difficulties occur, and seek urgent hospital care.
• Begin CPR immediately if the person becomes unconscious or suffers cardiac arrest, until help arrives.

Chinese arrivals are forecast to rebound to 6.7 million, matching 2024 levels, as confidence gradually returns and safety messaging improves.

Industry observers, however, warn that recovery will depend on more than promotional campaigns. Clear visa policies, consistent communication, and long-term stability will be crucial if Thailand is to regain momentum in an increasingly competitive Asian tourism market. After a two-week public consultation period, the prohibition has now been temporarily lifted, officials say, allowing off-licences, grocery stores, restaurants, and other registered outlets to sell alcohol all day from 11 am to midnight, including during the previously outlawed window between 2 pm and 5 pm, Sophon confirmed.

The trial comes just in time for Thailand’s peak tourist season and will last for 180 days, until May 2026, when its impact on alcohol consumption rates, traffic incidents, and hospital admissions will be reviewed before any steps to permanently change Thai drinking laws.

Travel and tourism stakeholders have long lobbied the National Alcohol Policy and Alcoholic Beverage Control Committees for the shift, arguing that the ban was hurting the Thai tourism sector, with tourists eschewing Thailand and choosing to visit neighbouring destinations such as Indonesia, Malaysia. Vietnam, instead, in order to enjoy the relaxation and partying associated with being on holiday.

But the new, temporary situation is not a free-for-all. The lifting of the ban follows another recent edit to Thai alcohol legislation, greenlit on 8 November, that introduced penalties for those who buy alcohol outside of licensed hours, rather than just the sellers.

Under the new law, anyone caught drinking alcoholic beverages outside of permitted times faces a fine of up to 10,000 baht (€270), making consumers responsible for unauthorised purchases for the first time and, campaigners said, addressing the disproportionate punishment of small family hospitality businesses. Another controversial clause concerns private homes, hotel rooms and Airbnbs. While drinking at home remains legal, a neighbour’s complaint about noise after midnight could prompt an inspection – and, depending on the circumstances, a fine. The Straits Times notes that the ambiguity of this clause has caused considerable confusion.

The Thai government says the new rules aim to improve public well-being and reduce alcohol-related harm. The measures form part of a wider campaign to enhance Thailand’s international image, clamp down on unlicensed tour operators, and put an end to the short-lived ‘cannabis tourism’ era. One might argue that simply re-airing Bangkok Hilton, the Nicole Kidman miniseries that once deterred travellers, could have achieved a similar effect.

As part of this broader clean-up, the government has also restricted the use of celebrities and influencers in alcohol advertising.

This also follows a regional trend. Bali has recently tightened its regulations on disrespectful visitors and now provides behavioural guidelines at airports. Meanwhile, Ibiza and Mallorca have cracked down on alcohol consumption in popular resorts, banning street drinking and imposing restrictions on party boats that come too close to the shore.

“Those who signed it may not realise how much damage it will cause to the tourism and service economy”, said Sorathep Rojpotjanaruch, chairman of the Thai Restaurant Business Association, in comments reported by local media.

Nightlife and restaurant groups are preparing a formal petition calling for the law to be clarified and revised. Among their demands is the abolition of the long-criticised 2 pm – 5 pm sales ban, which Chanin Rungtanakiat, deputy secretary-general of the Pheu Thai Party, described as “unnecessary and outdated”.

The private sector also argues that the rules disproportionately affect small restaurants and family-run venues that cannot afford a full alcohol licence. Several commentators have pointed out that European travellers, for whom the early-evening apéritif is near-sacrosanct and holidays rhyme with no restrictions, may choose other destinations with fewer limitations.

Australia has already updated its travel advice, warning citizens to be aware of Thailand’s new alcohol rules.

Whether these measures will truly improve public safety or merely complicate daily life for residents, tourists, and small businesses remains to be seen. What is clear is that Thailand has joined the growing list of destinations hoping that tougher rules will result in better behaviour.

In March 2025, AirAsia Thailand launched an all-female band named Véra consisting of five of its crew members. Their debut single, called “Tick-Tock (Say It)”, was released on social media and has proven to be quite the hit.

The song and general performance by flight attendants Pleng and Min and ground staff members Mind, Aimma, and Genne were meant as a marketing strategy to put AirAsia’s punctuality and attention to customers centre-stage.

However, more recently, Véra’s actions have been drawing criticism from passengers. One TikTok video in particular has been going viral and not necessarily for the right reasons. In the clip, made by a passenger on a domestic flight from Don Mueang to Phuket in Thailand, crew members, including Véra’s Aimma, can be seen dancing to Tick-Tock (Say It) aboard the plane, allegedly after service completion.

In the comment section of the video, many travellers have been leaving comments regarding the performance. While some found it to be amusing and diverting, praising the cabin crew’s dancing skills, others were less positive.

“In times of an emergency, not sure how trained they are to handle it though”, wrote one TikTok user.

“Just do plane maintenance properly and prevent delays. The cabin is cramped, and now they’re doing some kind of exposure performance? It’s pathetic”, a user wrote on X.

Overall, passengers seem to be concerned about the safety issues and the performance that might have been compromised. Instead of focusing on the passengers, the cabin crew was busy entertaining them, which might have turned out badly, according to many, in case of an emergency. Some passengers also insisted that such situations wouldn’t occur with airlines more concerned about regulations and criticised the revealing outfits worn by Véra’s members. The video, which was shared by TikTok user poohwichu16, was liked by Véra member Aimma, while AirAsia’s official account commented “Tick-Tock” below the video. However, no statement was released by the airline in order to address the criticism caused by the performance.
