While some might argue that curiosity about the world is nothing new when it comes to driving travel, the rise of mass tourism as a checklist activity during the second half of the 20^th century could be argued to have erased some of the joy of individual discovery and development that seeing the world can offer. More recently, possibly in a backlash to such a consumerist vision of the world, experiential tourism and the search for authentic, community-led, responsible travel have grown in popularity.

Feeding into that demand, stakeholders in Uppsala, in east-central Sweden, hope to showcase why the destination is the perfect place for travellers motivated by more holistic goals.

“We consider it a movement, with travel increasingly centred on meaning, context and new facets rather than simply experiences to check off a list. Uppsala has all the prerequisites to be a destination for this type of traveller,” says Helena Bovin, Head of Marketing at Destination Uppsala.

Less than an hour north of Stockholm, and possessing one of the most youthful populations in the country, Uppsala boasts “one of Europe’s oldest universities and a history of pioneering spirits,” press materials point out. This background, they argue, makes it the perfect place to experience IQ tourism, such as:

• hunting down a moveable red tower that will change location during the year
• using code words to unlock book tips at an independent bookstore
• exploring what lies behind a memorial stone for a historical event that perhaps never happened but has left a mark
• creating one’s own perfume with every ingredient chosen to tell a story
• discovering a miniature world hiding in plain sight in the city
• or simply indulging in a specialist coffee roastery where the conversation is as important as the beans

Ironically perhaps, for an approach that is supposed to reject check-lists, promoters have put together a list of around 60 “experiences, places and phenomena – from groundbreaking research and history to contemporary innovations, culture, food and handicrafts,” to give visitors “just a selection of everything that Uppsala has to offer, providing new insights, new knowledge and new perspectives.”

The campaign will be visible through video content, digital, and physical channels, Uppsala’s own and third-party social media accounts and commercial media both in and outside Sweden.

Named for the wildflowers — a regional symbol — that grow along the way, the Ljungleden trail, or “heather trail” covers 170 km and takes mostly asphalted, dedicated cycle paths and low-traffic roads, with some gravel sections, making the itinerary suitable for both experienced and casual cyclists. And with accommodation options and rail connections en route, it can be tackled as a complete adventure, or broken into segments that offer single days out.

The cycling path starts in Drottningtorget, a prominent public square in the heart of Gothenburg that serves as a major transport hub, with the city’s central train station nearby. It’s a strategic location that is usually an ideal starting point for exploring the city of Gothenburg. But cyclists heading out of town will soon find themselves taking a former railway embankment towards the village setting of Sjövik.

In addition to the spectacular scenery of Västergötland, culinary highlights are promised along the way, such as the Folket på Garveriet bakery and cafe 30 km in at Floda, where a historic castle filled with Arts and Crafts also awaits. Or why not indulge in the tradition of fika, with a tour and the ultimate coffee and bun, in Alingsås, known as Sweden’s fika capital.

Further along, you can explore Swedish cycling history with a visit to an exhibition dedicated to the Fåglum brothers, who won medals in the Giro d’Italia, World Championships and Olympic Games in the 60s and 70s. Regional produce and specialties provide the fuel at Dahlbogården, part of the Taste of Sweden network, and at Herrljunga’s farm shop, where you can take the produce away with you as you reach the end of your trip.

For those who wish to carry on the two-wheeled adventures, the new route provides a new connection between two other popular cycle trails. Awarded ‘European Cycle Route of the Year’ in 2018, the Kattegatleden sea path in Gothenburg—a 390-km-long itinerary from Helsingborg in the south to Gothenburg in the west—takes riders along the coast, through idyllic fishing villages, beautiful gardens, and iconic bathhouses, as well as offering up Kullaberg nature reserve, where other outdoor pursuits like hiking and rock climbing can be tried.

Alternatively, the Ätradalsleden route goes inland, along car-free, disused railway embankments, passing peaceful fields, lakes, and plenty more farm cafés and local produce shops. A special mention here must go to Torpa Stenhus, a private estate and one of the country’s best-preserved medieval castles, situated on the shore of Lake Åsunden, which is open for guided tours and exhibitions during the summer.

The billionaire ban is part of the campaign’s larger message. Visit Sweden aims to redefine luxury as silence, simplicity, and closeness to nature. With more than 267,000 islands, the country has a vast archipelago to explore. The campaign promotes the idea that some experiences cannot be bought. Instead, it values mindset, creativity, and a genuine appreciation for the environment. 

Sweden’s Right of Public Access, or Allemansrätten, allows everyone to move freely through nature, even on private land. That means guardians will not have exclusive access to their islands. Visitors may pass through or camp briefly, reinforcing the idea that nature is shared and should be respected by all. This rule helps ensure guardians understand their responsibility while enjoying their temporary retreat. 

Each of the five islands offer a different kind of escape. Tjuvholmen near Lidköping is surrounded by pine forest and overlooks Lake Vänern, while Medbådan, shaped by the last Ice Age, combines small woodland areas with calm waters ideal for swimming or paddling. Skötbådan and Storberget offer a more rugged setting, with rocky shores and open sea views shaped by wind and waves. On the west coast, Marsten stands out for its pale stone landscape and clear waters popular for fishing. All islands must be reached by kayak, paddleboard, or boat, making the journey part of the experience. 

Each location has its own atmosphere, from forested calm to exposed coastal scenery. Some are closer to small towns with restaurants and museums, while others feel more remote and wild. More detailed information about each island and nearby attractions is available on Visit Sweden’s official website. 

Entering the contest is simple but creative. Applicants must submit a video, no longer than one minute, explaining why they deserve to become an island guardian. Entries must be submitted through this official form by 17 April 2026 at 11:59 pm. Sharing the video on social media with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland can increase chances but is optional. A jury made up of Visit Sweden representatives and partner organisations will select the five most compelling applications, focusing on creativity, enthusiasm for nature, and understanding of guardianship responsibilities. Winners will be announced in May 2026. 

The prize also includes a travel voucher worth up to SEK 20,000 (€18,000) for a round-trip to Sweden for two people, valid between June 2026 and May 2027. However, participants should not be camera-shy, as guardians are expected to take part in promotional activities and allow Visit Sweden to use their name, image, and comments for publicity. 

Through this campaign, Sweden presents a fresh view of luxury. It is not defined by yachts, private jets, or designer resorts. Instead, it is silence, simplicity, and responsibility in nature. For one year, five people will experience what it means to care for a small part of Sweden’s vast archipelago, balancing solitude, adventure, and stewardship.

Of course, boredom does not necessarily mean ‘doing nothing’. This campaign highlights slower, quieter forms of travel, such as going off-grid in a cabin in Sörmland and letting solitude carry you from dawn to dusk. It also encourages walking through forests where the scent of pine acts as a form of detox. In Lapland, where the days in winter are very short, the dark skies are perfect for stargazing and admiring the northern lights.

You don’t have to abandon winter pleasures either. Instead of overcrowded ski resorts, Sweden invites visitors to strap on snowshoes and walk through Jämtland, or to go ice fishing with locals on a frozen lake near Östersund. Food is part of the reset too, with options including grilled whitefish, reindeer meat and local dishes with northern roots.

These include the floating Arctic Bath in Lapland, the mountain hotel Fjällnäs with its lakeside rituals and the forest hideaway Stedsans, where saunas and wilderness baths can be enjoyed in near-total silence.

Visit Sweden has published a full list of suggested activities for anyone wishing to ‘restart their brain’. Those without the luxury of travelling north can apply the same principles at home.

Kiruna began life as a mining town founded between two ore-rich mountains in 1900. Using the weather-proofing skills that Nordic nations are often associated with, city planner Per Olof Hallman placed it on a south-facing incline, sheltering its streets and residents from the region’s Arctic Circle winds by allowing roads to curve and follow the landscape.

Despite being Sweden’s northernmost town, and one with an industrial origin, Kiruna is not as grim as one might imagine – indeed, it has long been classed as a “model Winter City.” Colourful weatherboarded residences in rich ochre and red, pale blue and green, line its wide, tree-lined avenues.

But, threatened with subsidence caused by the mining activity that had birthed it, Kiruna had to start again, uprooting its 18,000 inhabitants, shifting 20 significant structures to a new site, including a two-day manoeuvre of its beloved 672-tonne church, once voted Sweden’s most beautiful pre-1950 building. Other buildings were created from scratch.

All that effort, yet both researchers and residents have noticed that the new Kiruna’s position is not as favourable as before. Despite the council choosing a spot on the “southwestern and southern slopes of a mountain 500–570 meters above sea level,” they failed to implement key winter city planning principles, according to a paper published in URBAN DESIGN International in July 2025.

New Kiruna is, the author says, “on average 10°C colder than the previous setting.” This is due to a number of factors. Despite being a known climatic drawback, its new centre now sits “in a valley at the base of a low mountain, where cold air tends to accumulate especially during the winter months.”  Instead of curving, streets are in a grid layout, and one in particular has been described by locals as “a bloody wind tunnel.” The height and density of buildings mean the sun struggles to penetrate (a problem predicted in a pre-development assessment, yet ignored), and some are built with communal areas facing north. Despite some attempts to mitigate these issues, “residents continue to report discomfort due to wind exposure.”

Perhaps another reason why the town feels cold is its lack of “sufficient meeting places, and public spaces,” and “a perceived absence of art and cultural expressions,” with “minimal recognition of the indigenous Sami population and the Tornedalian minority.”

Five years into the 86-year project, Dezeen perhaps prematurely reported on its success. It was acknowledged that, unlike other communities that will need to uproot in the coming decades due to climate change, Kiruna’s shift was funded by mining riches, but, other than that, there were principles that could be emulated in the words of Scandi design firm Henning Larsen, when it came to “moving the minds of citizens and creating a new home and identity.”

Communication was key, boasted Göran Cars, urban planner for the Kiruna municipality, who noted they “started with a dialogue.” Yet, even in 2019, the residents were complaining that, though the church was being moved, the graves and the town’s precious 100-year-old birches were being left behind. Half a decade later, the URBAN DESIGN study suggests that vital Swedish know-how about building for harsh conditions was left behind, too.

It’s a chance to slow down and enjoy your company – without fuss or expectation. It’s about taking a real break, even from your phone. Linked to lower stress and better focus, a fika can be enjoyed anywhere. Try a cosy café during your stay or enjoy your fika in nature, as Swedes often do.”

Even listening to heavy metal music can be good for your health, according to this campaign, thanks to the way it “can enhance positive emotions and regulate anger.” Each claim is backed up with reference to research papers that prove the point.

While the Swedish Prescription may seem like a gimmicky promotion, and indeed, the small print makes clear it is “a marketing campaign,” it was developed in collaboration with Yvonne Forsell, Senior Professor at the Karolinska Institutet. What’s more, in some countries, “culture prescriptions,” “nature prescriptions,” and “social prescriptions” are, in fact, a real deal available from health practitioners and a survey shows almost two-thirds of respondents would consider following a doctor’s orders of this type. Remnants of ice and snow on the ground mean you have to watch your footing. Then something catches your eye. Something extraordinary. It wasn’t there yesterday. But what is it? It looks so real. You scan around, wondering if it’s a prank. You bend down for a closer look… and you’re instantly swept into a secret world of tiny art.

Though fictional, this scenario could well have played out on a dark December morning in 2016 when a mysterious miniature house appeared like a pop-up restaurant for mice on a busy street in Malmö, Sweden.

Built with scaled precision, the installation conjured up visions of nissar going about their own quotidian lives, worrying how the cost of living will affect business, rushing to the chemist before it closes, buying Italian takeaway for dinner, and getting in some last-minute Christmas shopping.

No one knew who was behind the stunt or why. Speculation took hold. Confusion reigned. The only clue was a Banksy-like stencil of a mouse-eared V for Vendetta character captioned ‘Anonymouse’.

Guerilla art can be a powerful medium for activism to raise awareness about issues. But the Anonymouse collective offered no apparent political and social message, nor an obvious commercial agenda. Could it simply be art for the people, a kind gesture? We would have to wait nearly a decade for an answer to that question.

Anonymity to a point

The Anonymouse crew – later nicknamed ‘Banksy Mouse’ – were not ready to reveal themselves. For years, they conjured up playful alternative worlds like the Italian eatery ‘Il Topolino’, the insect-inspired pharmacy ‘Apoteket Cikadan’, and the nut shop ‘Noix de Vie’, which popped up in southern Sweden and other countries.

Then, as mysteriously as it started, the V-Mouse team decided to pull back the curtain. It was announced in June that these finely crafted pieces were the work of two Swedish artists, Elin Westerholm and Lupus Nensén.

The pair had met while working as designers on the British version of the Wallander TV series.

At first, they said they wanted to do something creative and fresh, but with a whimsical note to brighten up the dark Scandinavian winter. People loved the idea. Somehow, it struck a chord.

When announcing they would be retiring the Anonymouse series, Nensén attributed their successful partnership to their different but complementary aesthetics, merging his gothic stylings with Westerholm’s Swedish folkhem (people’s home) sensibilities. Somehow, they managed to “make it all look as though it belongs to the same world”, he concluded.

And while that world may seem secretive or even out of step in the prosaic of daily life, the grown-up version of every child is happy to adjust their eyeline for a glimpse of simpler, perhaps more magical times.

Mystery revealed, a summer exhibit

Several original Anonymouse mini-houses were featured in a Summer Exhibit at Lund’s Skissernas Museum – dedicated to the artistic process and public art – from 27 June to 24 August 2025. Young and old are encouraged to find objects like safety pins and a paper clip immersed in the miniature displays (all at ground level, of course!).

Flight DL 205 should have taken off from the Swedish capital’s Arlanda Airport at around 10 am for a nine-hour journey, landing at New York’s JFK at approximately 1:00 pm local (Eastern) time. Instead the pilot was arrested at around 9:00 am, and the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300 which typically seats around 269 passengers, remained on the ground, FlightAware data shows.

Potential costs for Delta and the pilot

With so many flyers affected, Delta is looking at steep costs thanks to the pilot’s alleged inebriation. The European Union’s rule 261 sets compensation at around $705 (just over €600) per person, and that’s not including any accommodation or meals for the passengers, the waste of meals on the cancelled flight, or the disruption to staffing and knock-on effect to other departures. View from the Wing estimates the bill will amount to at least $160,000 (around €136,000).

The pilot meanwhile, if found to have committed a “normal violation” might have to pay a fine or go to prison for six months. If the blood alcohol level is particularly elevated however, a custodial sentence of two years could ensue. The woman in question is not thought to fall under the latter category, reports say, and it’s worth noting that different people metabolise alcohol at different rates, meaning she may have had an alcoholic drink many hours before and not have been egregiously drunk.

When were alcohol rules introduced for pilots and why?

The European Union’s Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) first proposed random alcohol tests for pilots and cabin attendants on flights out of the EU in 2016, following the Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 disaster in which co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed an Airbus 320 into the Alps, killing all 150 people on board instantly. The amendment to Regulation (EU) 965/2012 was only brought into force in 2021 after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the United States meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration’s so-called “bottle-to-throttle” rules prohibit pilots from flying within eight hours of consuming alcohol, or with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.04% or more. Some carriers, including Delta and United, impose a stricter 12-hour abstinence period.

Following the Stockholm incident, Delta said it was cooperating with Swedish law enforcement and insisted in a statement that “nothing is more important than the safety and security of our customers and people. We apologize to our customers for the disruption to their travel, and teams are working to get them to their destinations as soon as possible.”

An exhilarating cultural scene

The city’s cultural landscape has allowed creatives to explore their ideas, offering a mix of galleries, festivals, and events that cater to diverse preferences. At the heart of this scene is the Form/Design Center, a home of contemporary art and design. Located in one of the most charming parts of the city, in a 16^th-century building, the space features different exhibitions ranging from Scandinavian furniture to experimental installations. The site features an open-air courtyard and a café, inviting visitors to sip coffee, relax, and soak in the atmosphere. Anyone can enter free of charge, which transforms the Center into an accessible stop for anyone.

Those interested in architecture should definitely visit the Turning Torso. Designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava, this neo-futuristic skyscraper raises 190 metres into the sky, resembling a twisting human body. Finished in 2005, it’s Sweden’s tallest building and a symbol of Malmö’s modernity. There are guided tours, offering a glimpse into its engineering and the opportunity to explore the views of the Öresund Bridge’s architecture.

Additionally, art lovers can explore Malmö Konsthall, another sanctuary for contemporary art. The Konsthall is also one of the largest contemporary art spaces in Europe with a minimalist design. Free of entrance fees, it hosts different installations that change regularly. Currently, visitors of the Konsthall can see a collection of Lars Fredrikson’s body of work including paintings, collages, and kinetic sculptures as well as the 50^th anniversary exhibition of the Konsthall offering a retrospective of past exhibitions.

Abundant green spaces

Malmö’s commitment to sustainability is visible not only in its modern building design but also through its lush green parks, which serve as an escape from the urban. One such example is Folkets Park, Sweden’s oldest public park founded in 1891. There is a wide range of activities all year round and the appearance of the park changes based on the seasons.

Another interesting place is Slottsträdgården, beside Malmöhus Castle. This garden is the perfect place to explore different types of plants from various origins. Proximity to Copenhagen

Malmö’s location makes it great for a two-city adventure. There are multiple 20-minute trains that connect Copenhagen’s Airport to Malmö Central Station.  Trains run every 20 minutes via the Öresund Line, with tickets starting at around 10€ This accessibility makes day trips extremely easy, letting visitors explore the two cities together. Furthermore, the proximity to the airport allows for easy and cheap transfers from other countries. While one can fly to Malmö Airport, the Danish airport tends to have more frequent international flights, allowing visitors from different countries to explore Sweden’s hidden gem.
