Described by city authorities as a “sea of lights and decorations” that lends the “streets and squares a magical air”, the Winterlights Festival (21 November 2025 – 4 January 2026) is a patchwork of Christmas markets and twinkling delights where Luxembourgish traditions are on full display.

For anyone who has ventured to a winter wonderland-themed installation in Belgium or the mothership of such folksy fanfare, in Germany, the sensory overload and sheer crush of people and stuff can be off-putting. This is where Luxembourg has managed so well, spreading the installations across the city in a clear understanding that cosiness still needs good logistics.

Market stalls are tastefully decorated, and the goods are, for the most part, crafty and Christmassy in spirit – keeping commercial clutter to a minimum. Food services are clean and tastefully arranged. Adding to the warm cheer, the city has scattered outdoor wood-burning heaters around the markets, protected by a clever standing table guard and chimney arrangement. You can rest your Glühwein and Mettwurst on the wooden guardrails while warming your hands by the fire. Genius.

Grand history in a small package

Luxembourg may well have been hiding its Christmas lights under a bushel all this time. But there is more to it than its footnote reputation lets on. Founded in the 10^th Century when Count Siegfried acquired the rocky promontory known as the Bock, the city grew into one of Europe’s most formidable fortress towns.

Its strategic position between Germanic and Romance Europe shaped its culture, language, and architecture – a blend still visible today in the elegant upper city, the dramatic cliffs of the Pétrusse Valley, and the Unesco World Heritage-listed old quarters.

This crossroads identity also underpins its Christmas customs. While France lies just over the border, Luxembourg’s festive spirit is distinctly more Germanic: timber huts, hearty dishes, and mulled wine in steaming cauldrons. The country’s long adoption of Adventszeit traditions – markets, music, lantern walks and candlelit streets – means that Christmas here feels time-honoured rather than staged.

A city-wide glow

What surprises first-time visitors most is the calm. Step out of the central railway station and the city feels instantly more spacious and unhurried than many European capitals in December. The Winterlights Festival, spread across several districts, adds pockets of atmosphere without the pushiness. Glowing trees line Avenue de la Liberté, leading towards clusters of chalets where local craftspeople, bakers, and wine producers chat as readily as they serve.

The city’s layout, descending from the upper plateau to the lower valley, makes wandering a pleasure. The free panoramic lift, which glides some 70 metres, offers sweeping views of cliffs, bridges, and rivers before depositing you within walking distance of another miniature winter world. Free public transport throughout the capital means the main Winterlights centres (see list) are only a short ride or walk apart, allowing visitors to drift between them at leisure.

Festive flavours, local flair

Luxembourg’s seasonal dishes are warm, rustic, and filling. Market stalls serve kniddelen, soft dumplings bathed in creamy bacon sauce, and gromperekichelcher, spiced potato cakes traditionally eaten at Christmas and sometimes paired with applesauce. These classics, alongside grilled sausages, roasted chestnuts, and toasted treats over open fires, give the markets a homely feel.

To drink, locals favour Crémant de Luxembourg, a crisp sparkling wine that pairs nicely with cold nights and cheerful music. Local beers and mulled wine are everywhere too, often flavoured with regional twists.

Dispersed delights

One of Luxembourg’s greatest festive luxuries is space. Timber stalls decorated with hand-carved features can be admired without queuing or being ushered to move on. Families can perch at tables, move between markets, and linger by fire pits without much jostling. It is Christmas at Luxembourg speed.

The Grand Duchy’s reputation for being on the dull side is not only undeserved – it is baffling. Beyond the festive season, the city offers panoramic fortifications, museums such as the Mudam for Contemporary Art and the impressive National Museum of History and Art, palace-lined squares, riverside walking paths, and the storybook Grund quarter tucked between cliffs. In winter, these same landscapes form a romantic backdrop to the warm glow of Winterlights.

Luxembourg may be small, but at Christmas it punches far above its weight. Its pockets of festive cheer – calm, welcoming and gently illuminated – are an invitation to slow down and rediscover the season’s simple pleasures.

Marked trails fan out like capillaries around the rolling farmlands of Heinerscheid in the Clervaux Canton of Luxembourg. Several paths snake their way through dense moss-coated forests, dropping down a steep embankment towards the sparkling Our River.

The unassuming “Bunker” trail caught my eye instantly.  I assumed it would be a hollowed-out, bat-filled remnant of Germany’s Siegfried Line – over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and tank traps built in the late 1930s to ‘defend’ its border all the way from Holland to Switzerland. But I was wrong.

Off I headed with the dog leading the way, as always. On the way down, I realised you can take a more circuitous ‘muddy’ route or stay on the paved road that carries on from the signposted junction. The bunker is then clearly marked down a gravel road towards a boarded-up lodge. Another 50m further along, and nestled against an eerily quiet pine forest is a ‘Remember US’ information panel in English, Luxemburgish and German tucked in beside a monument and plaque dedicated to five brave Luxembourg lads.

The story of defiance it describes is just one of thousands, many untold, in the countries living under German occupation between 1940 and 1945. In Luxembourg’s case, a “strict Germanisation and Gleichschaltung” policy was activated, effectively subjugating “every area of public life” under the watchful eye of Hitler’s National Socialist Party.

Then, in 1942, Nazi district governor Gauleiter Gustav Simon declared compulsory military service for young Luxembourgers born between 1920 and 1926 – a cohort of more than 10,200 to be handed over to the Wehrmarcht. According to the info-panel, the announcement led to a series of impromptu strikes and reprisals – many of the leaders were executed or deported. While most Luxembourgers probably accepted their fate, around 3,500 deserted – tried to join the allied forces or went into hiding.

The Heinerscheid Five

The Heinerscheid Five – Pierre and Alphonse Jungels, Willy and Alphonse Kremer, and Josy Frères – chose the latter. When they became aware of Simon’s Zwangsrekruitierung drive they went underground … quite literally as it turned out.

They managed to keep off the radar for some time, but in August 1943 German security services intensified their raids in the Heinerscheid area. The Jungels brothers and Kremer twins no longer felt safe in the village so they relocated to a dense patch of firs in the Am Pesch forest  beside the Our River. It was there that they started building their now famous Bunker.

The ‘Remember US’ panel ably describes what happened next:  “There they were joined by Josy Frères, another réfractaire deserter from the German army. To erase all traces of their building activity they filled the soil from the diggings into buckets and carried it to a bog, about 200 yards away. Some villagers provided food, and other necessities like clothes, so the young men could subsist.”   

The lads stayed hidden like that for many months, enduring the frigid Ardennes winter. Then one night they were joined by two surviving crew members of a crash-landed American B-24 bomber, Staff Sergeant Joe Kerpan and Second Lieutenant Robert Korth.

The Luxembourg Resistance were informed and soon came to retrieve the airmen with the intention of spiriting them back to the UK, via Belgium. “But after a few days they ran out of luck and were caught by the Germans when they were stopped at a checkpoint.”  

Not how the story ends

Life carried on underground after the Americans left but the drudgery and privations were becoming unbearable, leading to what the info-panel describes as “a string of errors that were to cost them dearly”. The lads had started lighting fires to cook food and warm the bunker. On a few occasions they also ventured back into the village to see friends and family.

“One day, German soldiers who were on guard in one of the Siegfried Line pillboxes on the opposite slopes of the river valley noticed smoke rising from the stand of fir trees where the young Luxembourgers were hiding,” Remember US notes at the memorial site.

This was reported and led to a search by the local German police force who tracked the deserters down. On April 23, 1943 the police approached their dugout and an exchange of gunshots followed. All five avoided capture but they were not out of trouble yet.

Before they were able to arrange a new hideout, the police returned with reinforcements, which led to a Ned Kelly-style shootout (minus the home-made suit of armour). A local auxiliary policeman called ‘Weber’ fell victim during the skirmish.    

Now armed with Weber’s machine gun, the lads managed to push the police force back beyond the tree line, but “giving up was no option for the Germans”, the info-panel continues ominously. Another assault was launched the next day. The Luxembourg Five resisted again, hitting back hard and wounding several police.

To avoid further casualties, the Germans and their recruits decided to blast the fugitives out: “The force of the explosion that ensued was so strong that the hideout was completely destroyed and the neighbouring trees were uprooted. None of the five young men was to survive this final onslaught.”   

The crater from the explosion can still be seen, down a fern-lined track to the valley’s slippery edge. The remains of the five young men were reportedly taken to Germany and buried in secret. After the war, several villagers traced their whereabouts and had them repatriated to Heinerscheid “where they were put to rest with full military honours”.

War tourism enthusiasts can brush up on sites via World War 2 Revisited and Remember US, and should not miss Clervaux Château for a poignant retelling of the region’s struggles during the Battle of the Bulge – also famously captured in the neighbouring Bastogne War Museum in Belgium. Hotel Cornelyshaff in Heinerscheid village has a warm vibe and local Ourdaller beers to wash down hearty fare. Nearby, the more upmarket Château d’Urspelt is popular for romantic weekends and its wellness packages.

“This allows all border residents, especially those from Belgium, Germany and France, to travel easily. And in addition, it is a good form of freedom. We don’t have this in France. There are fewer controllers, there is less hassle”, someone riding the tram said, reported by euronews.

Keeping public transport free is a €500 million annual investment, only €41 million of which are being recouped from the sale of first class tickets. The government considers this a fair amount of the national budget for the benefits it brings. The move is part of a plan to transition to multimodal transport.

The introduction of free public transport is an important social measure. You could describe it as the social icing on the cake of the global strategy for a multimodal revolution.

According to Eurostat, Luxembourg has the highest number of cars per person in the EU, with 662 cars per 1,000 people in 2016. Considering it also has some of the lowest gas prices in Europe, convincing people to give up their cars will be hard work. Two years after public transport had become free, congestion in Luxembourg was still at the same levels or even higher, according to Luxembourgish media virgule.

However, Deputy Prime Minister François Bausch said that making public transport free is just the beginning, arguing that before taking more coercive measures aimed at reducing the use of cars, people need to have viable alternative solutions. Accordingly, the country is also investing in making train services more reliable, as well as in cycling infrastructure and electric vehicles charging stations.

Among the projects are: the systematic expansion of capacity in the national rail network; doubling the current number of car parking spaces, especially at the borders so that the 200,000 commuters who come to Luxembourg every day from neighbouring countries can have convenient connections; the complete overhaul of the national network of bus routes and switching the fleet to alternative drive technology by 2030; a cohesive network of cycle routes.

Apart from this, Bausch pointed out the move also increases equity, saying that “the policy establishes a principle that people’s access to transport should not be restricted by their income”. Thus, for people on a minimum wage or relatively low salaries, the public transport is truly free, while for those who already pay higher taxes, Bausch said “the price is perhaps a little higher”.

Crémant is by definition a party product but, since the start of the pandemic, it’s not really been a time for celebration. But, despite the ongoing health crisis, there’s arguably never been a better time than the upcoming festive season to (re) discover this lovely wine. For the uninitiated, look on it as roughly something between champagne and sparkling wine.

Crémant producers were in Brussels recently to help spread the word about their delightful product to, they hope, a wider audience.

As one Crémant producer, Andre Klein, told Travel Tomorrow, there’s no doubting the quality of the wine, the only thing missing is that too few people know about it. Belgium is one of its biggest exports markets but, even here, sales are relatively small.

We want more people to know, firstly, that Luxembourg actually produces very good wines – you’d be surprised maybe at how few do – and, secondly, that Cremant is rather good and is especially ideal at this time of year when people are celebrating Christmas and the New Year.

The 19-year-old estate produces about 100,000 bottles of the stuff each year but, as with most of the country’s Cremant producers, the vast bulk of consumption remains in Luxembourg itself.

His comments are shared by another Cremant producer, Michelle Mannes, of the Haremillen vineyard, located on the site of an old mill, who said, “Our focus is on producing an elegant wine. Ours is fruity with a slight almond taste.” “I fully support efforts to publicise Crémant to a wider public.” About 3.5 million bottles are produced each year and Luxembourg crémant is  a  quality product due to the hard work the winemakers, like André and Michelle, put into producing the best fizz.  Efforts have been made to in recent years to increase visibility of the wines but more is needed, partly because of relatively low export sales of Luxembourg cremants.

Sales dipped sharply at the start of the lockdown as they did for all products intended for special occasions but people have now started buying wine and cremants again.

Both André and Michelle were among a group of producers from Luxembourg who presented around 20 Crémant du Luxembourg vintages. They were specially brought together for the occasion by the Les5duvin – one of the references of wine criticism in Europe – at Armes de Bruxelles in Brussels.

The event, organized with the support of the Institut Viti-Vinicole du Luxembourg, coincides with the 30th anniversary of Crémant de Luxembourg.

Claire Sertznig, of the Ministry of Agriculture in Luxembourg, who helped organise the event, says one measure of the grape’s success is that it wins medal after medal in major competitions, against the most prestigious appellations. It is little wonder since as, with Crémant de Luxembourg, the country’s winegrowers have set particularly high production standards.

This, says Claire, involves selection of the best grape varieties, limited pressing and ageing on slats.The result is that Crémant de Luxembourg, she says, is equal to the best bubbles in the world. But, if you, like many in Belgium and elsewhere, are new to this grape variety why not try it yourself and form your own opinion. And, as they say on the banks of the Moselle, “Zu äre Gesondheet!”

Already back in January, François Bausch (déi Gréng) and Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) had asked the European Commission for funds to upgrade the line. Bausch expressed that he wants to see the length of the journey between the two European capitals reduced to two hours.

According to Delano News, Luxembourg and Belgium signed a letter of intent in 2016, pledging to reduce travel time between the two capitals by around an hour to 2 hours and 7 minutes by 2023. This target, however, was later abandoned. In 2020, authorities in Belgium reported that the works would take at least another five years to complete. The current expected date is now 2028.

1. A new aircraft

Yesterday Luxair unveiled special livery for the occasion, the LX-LQC a De Havilland Q400 aircraft in the colours of the rainbow, designed in partnership with Rosa Lëtzebuerg, a local non-profit association founded in 1996 which fights for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community. The aircraft, which will make its first flight on 1 June to Ibiza, features the colours of the pride flag in the fuselage and cabin interior decoration as part of the “Be pride. Be Luxembourg” campaign. Tom Hecker, President of Rosa Lëtzebuerg, commented, “…with an aircraft that will be visible in the Pride colours at home and abroad for several weeks, a visible sign of the openness of the company as well as of Luxembourg will be set”.

Meanwhile Gilles Feith, CEO of Luxair, explained, “With our Q400 LX-LQC we give visibility to this Luxembourg association and to the Luxembourg Pride Week. Thanks to this new livery, Luxair will spread the importance of inclusiveness, which is a fundamental value of our society, in the destinations served by the Q400 and much further afield. With this new design, I invite our employees, customers, partners and suppliers to open their hearts and minds and be authentic. Authenticity has a positive effect on our personal satisfaction, performance and commitment. I believe in diversity, equality and inclusion… being accepted for who we are should never be complicated”.

2. An important partnership

The partnership with Rosa Lëtzebuerg aims to raise awareness to Pride and tackle discrimination. The first step of this collaboration involved organising seminars for Luxair employees, enabling them to become aware of and identify the factors of discrimination and to act against it. Through this partnership, Luxair aims to continue to develop, both internally with its employees and externally, a more inclusive and welcoming culture. 

Luxair is also launching a range of products to commemorate Pride month and is inviting everyone to wear the Luxair colours for Luxembourg Pride Week, taking place in Esch-sur-Alzette from 3 to 11 July.. Merchandise includes mugs, thermal bottles, T-Shirts, pins and “remove before flight” keyrings and products will be available from 2 June 2021 in Luxair Travel Stores, in the departure hall at Luxembourg Airport and in Munsbach. All profits from these sales will be donated to the Rosa Lëtzebuerg association. Tom Hecker said, “We are extremely pleased that Luxair has taken the initiative and consulted us to not only increase the company’s internal policy on acceptance of queer employees through discussions and workshops, but also to implement various approaches to improve customer service at the same time”.

If you want to visit the other side of Luxembourg you must visit the town of Echternach, near the border with Germany. It is the oldest town in Luxembourg and offers many nice things to do, from hiking in Mullertal or cycling along the River Sure or just exploring the town on foot in the pretty town center.

9. seafarers;
10. persons wishing to apply for international protection or for protection for other humanitarian reasons in Luxembourg;
11. third-country nationals travelling for the purpose of study;
12. highly qualified third-country workers if their employment is necessary from an economic perspective and the work cannot be postponed or performed from abroad.

People in categories 8°, 11° and 12° above need to be in possession of a specific attestation. They must apply for this by sending a specific application by e-mail to the Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office (service.visas@mae.etat.lu). Except for people in categories 5°, 6° and 7° above, and the members of families of people in category 6 above, people in all other categories must produce a negative test. On penalty of being refused entry into the Grand Duchy, any third-country national aged 11 or older wishing to travel by air to the Grand Duchy from a third country must, at the time of boarding, present the results of a biological test to detect the viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2 carried out within 72 hours of take-off indicating the absence of contamination by SARS-CoV-2. The result of the biological test must be presented, together with a translation into one of the Grand Duchy’s three administrative languages or English if it is not in one of these four languages.

It is possible to travel to Luxembourg if arriving from a country included on the following list:

• Iceland
• Switzerland
• Liechtenstein
• Norway
• United Kingdom
• San Marino
• Andorra
• Monaco
• Vatican
• Australia
• Japan
• New Zealand
• Rwanda
• South Korea
• Thailand
• Uruguay
• Singapore
• China, Hong Kong and Macao (subject to reciprocity at European Union level).

Nationals of an EU country or one of the Schengen Area associated countries are free to enter the European Union, irrespective of the purpose of their stay and not only to return to their home. These people do not need to produce a negative Test before entering the Grand Duchy.

Nationals of the United Kingdom, San Marino, Andorra, Monaco and the Vatican/Holy See are also free to enter the European Union, irrespective of the purpose of their stay and not only to return to their home. These people do not need to produce a negative Test before entering the Grand Duchy either.

Travelers arriving from any other country not included in the list above will not be allowed to enter Luxembourg.

2. Isolation, Quarantine, Self-monitoring

In Luxembourg, one distinguishes between isolation, quarantine and self-monitoring measures.

Isolation

Isolation applies to people who have been confirmed as being infected by COVID-19. They must self-isolate at home and the people living in the same house and their close contacts should quarantine themselves for 7 days. The aim is to prevent infected people – who are contagious – passing the infection on to anyone else.

Isolation is prescribed by the Health Directorate (Direction de la santé) for at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms. For asymptomatic persons, isolation begins on the day of the sampling. During this period of confinement at home, all contact should be avoided with other people and a surgical mask must be worn whenever anyone else is present. Failure to comply with an isolation measure incurs a fine.

Quarantine

Quarantine applies to people who have had high-risk contact with a person with a confirmed infection, i.e. face-to-face contact for more than 15 minutes, unprotected physical contact, etc. These people must stay at home for 7 days counting from the day of the last contact with the infected person. If necessary, the Health Inspectorate (Inspection sanitaire) will provide them with a certificate of incapacity for work. During this period, all unprotected contact with other people must be avoided.

From the 6th day onwards, they will be asked to be tested for COVID-19 at a laboratory of their choice, using the prescription that has been sent to them. If the result is negative, the quarantine requirement is automatically lifted. During the 7 days following the quarantine, they must self-monitor and wear a mask when in contact with other people. If any symptoms appear, they must immediately be tested again and placed in isolation; failure to do so incurs a fine.

Self-monitoring

Self-monitoring lasts 14 days. It applies to people who have had low-risk contact with a person who has been confirmed as being infected. The aim is to detect any symptoms of infection as soon as they appear. People who are self-monitoring take their temperature twice a day and check that they have no respiratory problems or cough and are able to continue with their normal activities.
