A whole village in Ireland, complete with five cottages, historic buildings, an artist’s studio, a library, a theatre, restaurants, and spa and yoga facilities, is up for sale with Sotheby’s, to buyers with a spare €20 million to spend.

The Village at Lyons, just 30 minutes by car from the Irish capital, sits on the Grand Canal between Dublin and the River Shannon. The eight-hectare estate stands where an early medieval royal site and a flour mill once lay.

The site fell into disuse and disrepair after a fire at the mill, but was purchased by Tony Ryan, the founder of Ryanair, in 1996, and renovated and restored by craftspeople for an estimated IR£80 million. It is now owned by businessman Barry O’Callaghan, who bought it in 2016, after Ryan’s death. It has been operating as a five-star hotel and wedding venue under the name Cliff Lyons.

It now promises a lucky new owner both grandeur and the good life. Impressive gates give way to a tree-lined approach among established gardens, lakes, orchards, and water fountains, as well as an outdoor Zen lounge and full spa, plus a hot tub and a yoga space.

A home theatre, artist’s studio, a billiards room, and library ensure buyers will get their dose of culture and entertainment, while the sleeping accommodation includes 47 rooms, including in seven self-catering, two-bedroom cottages covered in climbing roses, four larger estate lodges, and four apartments. It should be noted that the 10-bedroomed main house, a Georgian neoclassical gem, is not for sale at this time.

The village decor, however, boasts period features, including vaulted and cathedral ceilings, ornate fireplaces, arched and round windows, portraits, cottage and castle-core fabrics and colours, and modern bathroom and kitchen fixtures and fittings. And for those who prefer to let someone else do the cooking, dining, and hospitality venues, such as the Pantry Coffee Shop, the Orangery, and the high-ceilinged Shackleton Mill, are intact. Aimsir, a two-Michelin-starred on-site eatery, closed in early 2025.

Sotheby’s International Realty highlights the outstanding opportunity the property represents to own a piece of Irish history. In the property listing, the agent says: “Rarely does an opportunity arise to acquire an entire village of such architectural integrity and character. The Village at Lyons represents not simply a property, but a living piece of Irish heritage, where re-crafted centuries-old stone buildings, landscaped courtyards, gardens complete with a feature lake and water mill combine to create a setting of exceptional charm and distinction.”

Drivers in the Republic of Ireland are experiencing severe delays due to widespread protests on the roads against the rising cost of fuel following the Israeli and US attacks on Iran, and subsequent shipping blockades in the Middle East.

Starting from Monday, 6 April, transport in and around the Irish capital and beyond, including cross-border routes between Eire and Northern Ireland, has been affected by slow-moving convoys of lorries, buses, and agricultural and construction industry vehicles. The protesters say they are at risk of going out of business due to oil shortages that have pushed fuel prices in the republic to about €2.14 a litre for diesel and €1.91 a litre for petrol.

Fuel protests in Dublin city centre have caused buses and trams to halt, blocking the O’Connell Bridge line and disrupting traffic flow. pic.twitter.com/PBkhTWO3uP
— Global News & Geopolitics (@GlobalNewsGeo) April 8, 2026

International travel is also affected. Dublin Airport has warned that flyers should allow extra time for journeys to and from the hub, and Translink, a public transport operator of Metro, Glider, Goldliner, Ulsterbus, and NI Railways in Northern Ireland and cross-border travel, has likewise said its services are disrupted. Dublin Express coaches have been impacted, too.

In Dublin, access to O’Connell Bridge—an iconic central landmark that spans the River Liffey and connects the north and south sides of the city—has been blocked on both sides, causing gridlock in the centre and making it difficult to get to the city’s riverside quays, which offer scenic views and walks and are lined with visitor attractions such as the Custom House and the Irish Emigration Museum.

The O'Connell Bridge Blockade.’ As of Thursday morning, April 9, the fuel protests have entered their third and most intense day.

Ironically, around 50% of the country’s emergency fuel supply is inaccessible due to blockades on terminals and a refinery, Fuels for Ireland chief executive Kevin McPartlan told RTÉ.

With some commentators calling for the Irish police, An Garda Síochána, to take action against the unauthorised demonstrations, spokespeople have described the protests as peaceful but “causing significant disruption.”

An easyJet flight and its passengers were delayed by more than a day due to a group of travellers’ antisocial antics on board before take-off, according to a statement from the low-cost airline.

The departure, Flight EZY3077, was supposed to leave from Belfast International in Northern Ireland for Hurghada in Egypt at lunchtime on 3 January 2026. But, because of what easyJet described as passengers “behaving disruptively on board,” the departure did not take place until nearly 8 pm the following day.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland was called and has confirmed officers attended the incident and removed flyers from the plane, telling the press they “assisted Belfast International Airport Constabulary with the disembarkation of passengers.”

@easyJet – flight cancelled from Hurghada. No return until next Tuesday? Is this real? No one on the ground to assist and people simply abandoned. What can you do to help?
— David Turner (@Turner_Dave) January 4, 2026

The airline has insisted it will not “tolerate disruptive behaviour” and added: “The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority.” It described the incident as “outside of our control” and apologised “for the inconvenience this will have caused.”

Unusually, easyJet’s social media comments appear to contain no references to the incident or footage of what happened. But the long delay was not entirely due to unruly behaviour. The flight was rescheduled for a departure slot six hours after its original time, but poor weather and slot issues caused a further 13-hour delay, Belfast International has said.

One post on X suggests the delay had a knock-on effect on a departure coming back from Hurghada to Belfast, with the commenter complaining to easyJet on 4 January that: “our Hurghada-Belfast flight was cancelled last night. We were taken to a hotel and had to check out at 12. We’ve had no info on food or transfers. Flight is 2 am tomorrow morning now. Who can give us some info?”

@easyJet our hurghada -Belfast flight was cancelled last night.

Other commenters on Facebook suggested the airline or courts should make the disruptive passengers pay for the disruption. “Pass on the cost incurred by easyJet, might make them think twice next time!!” one social media user said.

Another commenter, writing in Italian, accused English passengers of always getting “drunk even before boarding. It’s normal for them.” Replies asked the commenter how he knew the unruly passengers were English.

Drunken behaviour by passengers is something that has been criticised in the past by Michael O’Leary, boss of Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers and easyJet’s budget rival, Ryanair. O’Leary has called for limits to be placed on pre-flight alcohol consumption, citing the costs incurred by the industry as a result of unruly passengers.

Ireland is celebrating one of its most remarkable football moments in recent memory, and the centre of the jubilation is Troy Parrott. The Irish forward lit up the weekend with an astonishing haul of five goals for the national team, including a dramatic hat trick in Budapest that secured Ireland’s place in the World Cup play-offs. The moment was so powerful that even Dublin Airport joined the celebrations, joking on Instagram that it had temporarily renamed itself Troy Parrott Airport.

“Feck it. Doing it,” the airport wrote in the caption of a post that quickly went viral. The light-hearted tribute reflected a wave of national enthusiasm after Parrott’s extraordinary performance in Hungary. His 96-minute goal, struck deep into stoppage time, sealed a memorable three-two victory and sparked jubilant scenes both inside the stadium and across Ireland.

Feck it.

The win ensured Ireland’s passage into the World Cup play-offs. The Boys in Green will discover their next opponents on Thursday, when the draw determines the two matches standing between Ireland and a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Unlike previous tournaments, the play-offs will no longer feature home and away ties. Instead, they will be contested through single-match knockouts, with semi-finals and finals determining which four of the sixteen competing European teams qualify for the World Cup.

The celebrations that followed Sunday’s dramatic finish spread far beyond Budapest. One of the most shared videos of the night came from Dublin Airport, where passengers gathered in a departures lounge bar erupted in joy as Parrott’s late winner hit the net. The clip, posted on X with the caption “Dublin airport pub right now,” captured travellers jumping, embracing and chanting in unison as if they were inside the stadium rather than waiting for flights.

Dublin airport pub right now. 90+6 #Ireland off to the playoffs pic.twitter.com/KaXrz1mEOJ
— Zuzana Botikova (@zuzinuanella) November 16, 2025

Not to be outdone, Cork Airport also marked the extraordinary weekend with a playful gesture of its own. On Monday morning, the airport shared a photo of a newly installed statue of Parrott seated beside Jack Charlton, the former Ireland manager and World Cup winner with England. “We are pleased to say that as of this morning, Big Jack has company,” the airport wrote, delighting fans who were still revelling in the victory.

Dublin Zoo has also joined the national tribute. The zoo revealed that it has officially named its male citron-crested cockatoo Troy, honouring the Irish forward’s impressive performance. The species is a critically endangered parrot, making the choice both fitting and humorous. Zookeeper Diana Farrell said, “It is not quite the statue many fans were calling for at full time yesterday, but we hope the original Troy sees it as another feather in his cap to go with the match ball he took home.” The zoo is also offering a fifty per cent discount on Saturday, 22 November and Sunday, 23 November for visitors who arrive wearing green.

Ireland’s wider football community has been equally enthusiastic. Speaking after the match, an emotional Parrott said, “This is why we love football, because things like this can happen.” His joy was echoed by former Ireland captain Roy Keane, who praised the team’s determination and resilience. “When you think of the way they started the campaign, a draw and a defeat. To win today on the back of the Portugal result is fantastic. Great boost for the country and the team,” Keane said on ITV.

Fresh off the plane and still buzzing – we grabbed the first Ireland fans returning from the Hungary match to hear their instant reactions! @IrelandFootball pic.twitter.com/BCillAoZzL
— Troy Parrott International Airport (@DublinAirport) November 17, 2025

Parrott’s hat trick and late winner have elevated him to national hero status, offering fresh hope as Ireland looks ahead to the decisive play-offs. The striker’s success has inspired pride across the country and has already become a symbol of ambition for young footballers. His rise also reinforces the growing optimism surrounding the national team, which now carries important momentum into its World Cup qualifying journey.

For now, Dublin Airport’s tongue-in-cheek rebrand reflects the celebratory mood that has swept Ireland. Whether passengers walk through Dublin Airport or Troy Parrott Airport, they do so with renewed belief that the Boys in Green may soon be bound for North America.

Dublin Airport announced last week that it was lifting its 100 ml limit on liquids at security and eliminating the need for plastic bags, following the completion of a multi-million-euro roll-out of next-generation C3 scanners across both terminals.

From now on, liquids and gels can remain in your hand luggage when passing through security, and containers of up to two litres are permitted. Laptops and other electronic devices no longer need to be removed from bags for scanning.

The airport has installed around 30 “cutting-edge C3 scanners and body scanners”, which work much like hospital CT scanners by generating 3D images of the contents of cabin bags. This improves the detection of the bags’ contents and speeds up the screening process. C3 is regarded as the most advanced threat-detection technology currently available in the industry.

Dublin Airport says it is among the first large European airports to be fully ‘C3 operational’, beating its own October 2025 target and the regulatory deadline of December 2025.

Big change to security rules

From midnight tonight, passengers at Dublin Airport won’t need to take liquids, gels, or electronics out of their hand luggage anymore. pic.twitter.com/Hwgqx4TaRZ
— Dublin Airport (@DublinAirport) September 18, 2025

However, passengers will still be required to remove belts, footwear, jackets, hoodies and jumpers, and place them in the security tray. The same applies to anything in their pockets.

Gary McLean, Managing Director of Dublin Airport, welcomed the new technology, calling it a ‘very positive and welcome development for passengers and staff’. He noted that during the peak summer months, the airport handled a record 11 million passengers smoothly and efficiently, with 96% proceeding through security screening in under 20 minutes, putting Dublin Airport on a par with the best in the world.

DAA chief executive Kenny Jacobs added that Dublin is ‘one of the first airports of its size in Europe’ to have C3 for every passenger and confirmed that Cork Airport will be next, with construction due to start this month as part of a €200 million investment.

Dublin is one of Europe’s busiest hubs, ranking 13th in terms of passenger traffic, with the majority of journeys being to and from the UK. According to Eurocontrol, 9.76 million travellers flew between Dublin and the UK in 2024, with an average of 91 daily flights. The security upgrade will therefore benefit many passengers.

Security just got easier at Dublin Airport pic.twitter.com/D1Ot0gFCCF
— Dublin Airport (@DublinAirport) September 19, 2025

However, DAA spokesman Graeme McQueen cautioned that not all airports have the same policies. Travellers flying with only hand luggage from Dublin to another airport may not be able to bring back the same amount of liquids and gels, since this rule has not yet been adopted universally. “The biggest limitation people should be aware of is that the rules might not be the same at the airport you’re returning to,” he warned.

While many restrictions were tightened worldwide following the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States, the original 100 ml rule dates from August 2006, when UK police thwarted a plot to assemble liquid explosives on board transatlantic flights. Europe subsequently standardised the 100 ml/one-bag policy. With C3 now approved at the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) level, airports can raise the limit to two litres once the technology is in place.

However, roll-out remains uneven. Several airports in Germany, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands and Sweden have deployed C3 and eased the rules, but most others are still transitioning. In the UK, where deadlines have been repeatedly extended, many airports have installed the scanners, yet Birmingham and Edinburgh are the only two to have lifted the 100 ml limit so far.

A renowned Irish UNESCO World Heritage site, estimated to be up to 60 million years old, is being damaged by tourists determined to leave their mark on the place, resulting in a plea from the UK’s National Trust for visitors to “leave no trace.”

The Giant’s Causeway on Northern Ireland’s County Antrim coast is a distinctive volcanic rock formation made up of around 40,000 hexagonal basalt stepping stones that lead out from the area’s cliffs into the sea. Legend has it that the mythological Irish giant, Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), built the causeway across the North Channel towards Scotland, in order to fight a Scottish counterpart.

In reality, the natural phenomenon arose from molten basalt coming up through chalk to form a volcanic plateau made up of pillars that then fractured horizontally into “biscuits”.

Special landscape crumbling and stained

The site has been a tourist attraction since the late 1700s and now regularly draws over half a million people every year. Dr Cliff Henry, from the National Trust, said visitors “really love and cherish the Giant’s Causeway, and many form deep personal connections to this special landscape.”

But all those visits are taking their toll because of a tradition that sees visitors wedge coins from their country of origin in between the rocks. Those coins then rust, “expanding to three times their original thickness, which puts huge pressure on the surrounding rock, causing it to crumble,” Henry explained. And the practice not only crumbles the rocks but it also creates “unsightly streaks of copper, nickel and iron oxides … staining the stones where the coins are corroding.”

Removing coins set to cost tens of thousands of euros

Conservation specialists paid for by the National Trust, Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust, have successfully carried out trials to remove coins from 10 locations without damage. The plan is now to continue that work and entirely free the site from coins, but the operation will cost in excess of £30,000 (over €35,600).

Hence, the appeal to the public to desist from leaving coins behind in what is not only a UNESCO treasure, but an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI).

Henry acknowledged that many tourists “may want to leave a token of their visit, but the coins are causing damage and we are urging people to stop the practice and to leave no trace so this natural wonder remains special for future generations.”

Most of us take respect for our human rights for granted, but unfortunately, human rights abuses have been proliferating and not only in far too many wars across the world. It is therefore particularly timely to explore the work of the Irish painter Brian Maguire, who has dedicated his life to exposing human tragedies, focusing on the marginalised and often ignored in society. He makes the invisible visible and gives them a voice. His work can be seen as a painterly declaration of the illusion of human rights.

Brian Maguire’s La Grande Illusion, hosted by the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, pulls no punches. I’ll start with a painting that is easy on the eye, but after that, all changes. Read on only if you want to see the truth of our times. Trigger warning: at least one of the paintings is hard to look at.

Maguire’s painting below almost feels like a beachscape. There is a beautiful blue. A man stands contemplating the water. We don’t know why or what he is searching for. Maybe he is just enjoying a refreshing break, admiring the expanse of blue. But this painting is Brian Maguire inviting us into his big illusion. Enjoy it. Then read the title – Over Our Heads the Hollow Oceans Closed Up. Ominous words heralding what is to come in the exhibition.

The hollow oceans and seas have too often been filled with the shipwrecked, with lost migrants. Some make it. Far too many don’t. We all remember the two-year-old Syrian refugee, Alan Kurdi, washed up on shore on 21 December 2015, a tragic victim of a failed attempt to escape the civil war and reach Europe (the Italian artist Jago sculpted Figlio Velato to help us never forget the tragedy). Brian Maguire, in his series Remains, presents us with another vision and memory of loss – of those lost migrating from Mexico to the US, washed up, broken, not on Mediterranean beaches but on the parched desert sands of Arizona. He cannot cover every tragedy individually, so he “looks for a single image that tells the whole story” (see his video, on Remains).

The Syrian civil war has been a civilisational tragedy. Aleppo should be a city known and heralded for its history – it has been a centre of civilisation for around eight thousand years. But it is now not known for housing the Amorite people, nor as an ancient trading city between Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean, as the centre of worship of the Storm-God by the Hittites, nor as an important part of the Ottoman Empire, its third biggest city. It is known for its destruction and the misery of the Syrian Civil War. Brian Maguire captures the loss of life in the grey, burst-open, broken buildings. The paint turns to rivulets of colourless blood in the lower part of the painting. War. Power. Destruction. We’ve all seen far too many similar press photos from Gaza and Ukraine.

Brian Maguire also explores the impacts of gang warfare and the tragedy of murdered women (the “feminicidio”). We are all used to the classical art of Perseus holding Medusa’s head (notably Cellini’s famous statue in Florence), or Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes, and treat them as literature or art to be marvelled at. Modern-day beheadings are no acts of literary creation or for artistic pleasure, but barbaric, heinous crimes that profoundly revolt. Skip the next painting if you wish. I didn’t select Maguire’s painting of the head on its own, as it was even more disturbing.

The destruction of the environment also features in Maguire’s outrage in paint. Below, in Burning Amazon (2023) and Clearcut Amazon (2023), he depicts the destruction of the Amazon, arguably the crown jewel of global biodiversity. In Burning Amazon, we see soot, charred trunks and blood-red fire. No trees are left. No green. None of the amazing species. Just our burning civilisational footprint. In Clearcut Amazon, where are the deep green canopies humming with life? All I see is a huge gash scarred right across the landscape to the horizon. An open wound. Much of the destruction is by illegal loggers, criminals not only against nature but also brutal in their suppression of truth. There have been beheadings of environmental defenders trying to document unlawful practices, as horrifically exemplified in Juan Bautista Silva and his son, Juan Antonio Hernández’s macabre death in Honduras. Beheaded and dismembered by chainsaw. They are not the only environmental defenders murdered, silencing the truth. Globally, more than 2,100 land and environmental defenders were killed between 2012 and 2023.

One act I had, until recently, thought firmly relegated to an unforgivable chapter of European history – the nazi salute – returns as a warning of modern fascist tendencies in Maguire’s Police Graduation (Juárez). Unfortunately, the image, with the black boots and the bodies leached of humanity’s colour, resonates beyond the tragic European past. Where has civilizational memory gone? Will the meaning leech out of the emphatic phrase- Never Again!?

With all this pain, fear and hate, it is best to end with hope. Below is a picture of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A commitment by all leaders to respect and enforce these would lead to lesser inspiration for painters like Ireland’s Brian Macquire, Italy’s Jago, South Africa’s William Kentridge, or the many other courageous artists painting the world as it is, so that we may not ignore the warnings.

Brian Maguire’s exhibition in Dublin, La Grande Illusion, an important but harrowing declaration on the illusion of human rights, has been extended to the 18th of May.
Tourism Ireland has launched a St Patrick’s Week bonanza of international promotions, to tap into curiosity about the island and bring more visitors and bookings to its shores. The media-friendly activity includes A Happy St Patrick’s Day song and video, an invitation to light up the world with “Global Greenings”, a focus on the Dublin Festival and a BBC documentary, as well as the agency’s ongoing work on its “Fill your Heart with Ireland” campaign.

The Irish band Lemoncello has produced a cover of Breathless by The Corrs, with a video that features Irish land and seascapes and captures the “evergreen” energy of the Emerald Isle, with its people celebrating at St Patrick’s Day events and the members of Lemoncello playing their music in a traditional pub “seisiún”. The video has had over 30 million views in its first seven days.

Music is not the only way the Irish share the joy of their national holiday with the world. Global Greenings have been going on since 2010 and despite a worldwide energy crisis, destinations all over the planet have chosen to light up their landmarks in green for the occasion. Tourism Ireland helps interested destinations with a toolkit and sites due to shine this year include the Empire State Building and Niagara Falls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sacré-Cœur in Paris, and the Sky Tower in Auckland.

Elsewhere, Ireland Week activities will take place in Madrid, Milan, Paris and Switzerland. The new festival in Madrid will bring a taste of Ireland to around 150,000 people, while coverage of the festival in New York will be broadcast to 8 million plus, all “generating buzz for Irish culture and visitation” a press release said.

In addition, an audience of over 200 million is expected to be reached by the output of the international media as its broadcasts and writes about the Dublin Festival and showcases St Patrick’s Week events, including a St Patrick’s Day documentary to be aired on BBC Four in Great Britain and Arté in Europe.

In 2024, overseas visitors to Ireland spent over 10% more than they did in 2023, bringing an estimated €7 billion in revenue to the island of Ireland. Tourism Ireland is hoping to build on that this year, noting that “the spotlight for Ireland created during St Patrick’s Week tees up spring and summer travel ahead.” Alice Mansergh, Chief Executive of the body, said: “St Patrick’s Day provides a unique opportunity to showcase the very best of Ireland to the world. This is a time of year that attracts an estimated 100,000 overseas visitors to the island.”

Tourism Ireland, the joint Eire and Northern Ireland tourism agency, has launched a marketing campaign intended to grow overseas tourism revenue for the north to an annual £2 billion by 2035. The plan includes the targeting of key international markets, as well as partnerships with transport operators, promotions across a range of channels, and a focus on bringing in visitors through sporting events and festivals.

The campaign follows up a previous “Fill your heart with Ireland” theme in the island’s advertising that leaned heavily on TV stars from popular comedy series Derry Girls, as well as the Irish reputation for charm, warmth and storytelling.

Sustainability, slow tourism and added value

That will continue, along with a focus on sustainability, slow tourism (which will have its own month-long push), and increasing the average tourist spend through drawing in those who like to get out and about exploring Irish communities, described as “‘value adding tourism traits”.

“Key markets will be the key driver in attracting those visitors and contributing towards my goal for tourism expenditure from overnight visitors to exceed £2 billion by 2035,” Economy Minister Conor Murphy said at the launch.

Economy Minister @conormurphysf joined @tourismireland at the launch of their 2025 Marketing Plans.

The role of Tourism Ireland in attracting overseas visitors to the north is vital in reaching the Minister’s goal of tourism expenditure by overnight visitors exceeding £2 billion… pic.twitter.com/GtuFwLcspP
— Economy NI (@Economy_NI) January 16, 2025

More than 13 of those markets have been identified, and they will be reached through TV and online platforms, Alice Mansergh, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, said.

“We will be collaborating with air and sea carrier partners to support demand for routes to Northern Ireland. With 80% of visitors researching and booking trips online, we will be sharing daily inspiration with our 7.5 million followers on social media and supporting 10 million deep research visits on our website, increasingly optimised for AI,” Mansergh announced. “Sporting moments like The Open at Royal Portrush present a key opportunity, with promotional activity already under way. Festivals throughout Northern Ireland create additional moments to spotlight, as we win holidays from overseas visitors to grow the benefits of tourism across the year.”

Risks from ETA and airport caps mitigated by funding

Despite risks posed by the introduction of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and a new passenger cap at Dublin Airport, growth of more than 6.5% in overseas tourism revenue for Northern Ireland will be needed each year through to 2030 in order to reach the target.

We are targeting average growth of +6.5% in overseas tourism revenue for NI each year to 2030 – growing revenue to around £1.3 billion per year by 2035. #TI2025 pic.twitter.com/JnqX07lgKy
— Tourism Ireland (@TourismIreland) January 16, 2025

That will be achieved through the creation of a billion advertising “opportunities to see”, the agency said in a statement. 500 million of those will be “messages about Northern Ireland in tier one international media outlets, with a focus on stories showcasing the magic of our regions,” they said.

More funding will be supplied too, Murphy promised, who noted that “Since taking up office, I have ensured that appropriate levels of funding have been restored to Tourism Ireland. The extent and aspirations of the plans outlined today are a direct consequence of this enhanced support, allowing Tourism Ireland to do more and to reach further in attracting key visitors here.”

In an unprecedented legal move, Irish budget airline Ryanair is suing a passenger for €15,000 following an incident of unruly behaviour that forced a flight diversion. The case, filed in Dublin’s Circuit Court, marks the first civil action of its kind in Ireland and is part of Ryanair’s zero-tolerance policy for disruptive passengers.

The incident occurred on 9 April 2023, during a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote. The passenger’s behaviour led to an unscheduled diversion to Porto, Portugal. This diversion then resulted in an overnight delay, forcing Ryanair to accommodate 160 passengers in hotels and cover additional expenses. The airline described the individual’s actions as “inexcusable” and “completely unacceptable”, emphasizing the disruption caused to other passengers, many of whom lost a full day of their holidays.

Under EU regulations, passengers affected by significant delays or cancellations are entitled to compensation, including free accommodation, meals and transport if an overnight stay is required. Ryanair ensured that all affected passengers on the diverted flight received these entitlements, even as it incurred substantial costs due to the incident.

The airline is thus seeking to recover damages to cover the costs incurred, including hotel stays and meals for affected passengers. In a statement, it reiterated its commitment to combating unruly passenger behaviour, stating, “This passenger’s inexcusable behaviour forced this flight to divert to Porto, causing unnecessary disruption to 160 passengers. It is unacceptable that passengers who work hard to enjoy a trip away with family and friends are robbed of their pleasure due to one individual’s failure to behave.”

The low-cost carrier hopes this legal action will serve as a deterrent to others, encouraging respectful and safe behaviour on board. “This demonstrates just one of the many consequences disruptive passengers will face under our zero-tolerance policy,” a Ryanair spokesperson said.

The legal case could set a precedent for other airlines grappling with disruptive passengers. Dr. Brian Flanagan, an associate professor at Maynooth University, suggested that the outcome of the lawsuit could influence industry practices in the future. “If successful, this legal approach may be adopted by other airlines, reassuring passengers and crew that such behaviour will not go unpunished,” he noted.

Disruptive behaviour on flights has been an ongoing challenge for the aviation industry. While this is Ryanair’s first civil suit against a passenger, similar actions have been taken elsewhere. For instance, in 2021, US regulators pursued a Texan woman for $82,000 after violent behaviour on an American Airlines flight.
