Designed by the Bali-based architecture firm MORQ and interior design office Studio Wenden, the complex comprises four distinct, yet visually coherent buildings scattered around Pererenan. Built as rectangular blocks, their façades are “functionally aesthetic”, wrapped in a porous, lattice-like sunshade crafted from handmade clay tubes produced in the nearby village of Tabanan.

From the outside, the brickwork lends the buildings an unexpected elegance – distinctive, warm and almost sculptural. Inside, the interplay of light and shade becomes the defining experience. “The relationship between light and shadow is an underlying theme that characterises our work,” said Andrea Quagliola, co-founder of MORQ, whose studio also operates in Perth and Rome. He added that the shifting daylight supports ‘a sense of discovery and spatial depth’ as one moves through the spaces.

Each building is organised around its own roof terrace, which is designed like a courtyard with a view of the sky and a sheet of water at its centre. Hospitality areas retreat into the shadows around it, creating a calm transition between sunlight and dimmer, cooler interiors. The largest of the four structures features a pool on its roof, tucked into a shaded alcove, invisible from the street below. Guests can enjoy snacks and relaxed dining at the rooftop restaurant Portion, while Bar Vera, located on the ground floor, offers a more substantial dining experience. Coffee is provided by St Ali, which is housed in one of the other buildings.

The hotel’s 25 suites feature sunken beds and materials such as cast iron, dark timber, and travertine. “Natural, sustainable materials feature prominently in our design choices, adding a tactile dimension to the overall architectural experience. Each touchpoint, from the polished wood underfoot to the bespoke textiles, underscores our commitment to luxury and sustainability”, according to the hotel description. Throughout the complex, earthy tones, ochre, terracotta, grey and black create a warm and minimalist atmosphere, animated by the vertical lattices and their shifting shadows, as well as the horizontal lines that guide the staircases. Sudden bursts of colour come from the hotel’s rotating programme of contemporary photography exhibitions, adding further layers of visual depth to the interiors.

In tune with the serene atmosphere of the place is also a shop featuring offerings from Object, a “sensory-inspired” brand, as well as perfumery Oaken Lab, which developed a custom scent for the hotel.

Claudio Cuccu and Martine McGrath are the minds behind the concept of this ‘diffused hotel’. Cuccu founded the acclaimed boutique property Slow in Canggu over 20 years ago and co-founded Further with Simon Digby and Tim Wiswell. They aimed to create a model that would respond to the island’s rapid development by blending into the local landscape rather than competing with it.

The battle between tourism and the needs of local residents is playing out in many destinations around the world, but Bali, sometimes described as “island of the Gods” is perhaps one of the clearest and most sensitive examples of these tensions playing out in real time. Koster has described the Southeast Asian island’s beaches as “highly important” religious and social spaces for local communities, where Balinese Hindus carry out Segara Kerthi rituals to honour and spiritually purify the sea, and Pakelem ceremonies see offerings made to the ocean as prayers for harmony, safety and blessings.

Despite 2016 Presidential Regulations that define land along the shoreline and 100m inland from the highest tideline as public spaces belonging to the state, hotels and resorts have increasingly flouted the rules, effectively restricting beach areas near their properties and preventing locals from accessing the shore or accusing them of trespassing.

Hotels and hospitality businesses have argued they need to maintain seaward vistas and, in some cases, as reported by The Jakarta Post, villa occupants have tried to stop locals from swimming in waters they consider to be part of their rental property. In addition, hoteliers and guests have been known to offend or drive away locals by allowing other practices that undermine local religious ceremonies to take place simultaneously, even though guidelines exist to regulate tourist behaviour, clothing and photography at sacred sites.

“Some hotel and villa operators are blocking public access, prohibiting residents from performing religious activities or carrying out inappropriate activities on the shoreline during important ceremonies,” Koster said, adding: “It’s as if those who build hotels or villas think they own the beach and the sea.” Koster said the new legislation would “restore Bali’s beaches to their original purpose,” urging council members to make a decision on the proposals before the end of 2025.

Also on the table are proposals to levy a daily visitor tax on the island to support sustainable development and highlight the need for a responsible tourism model in Bali. A moratorium is currently in place, preventing permits from being issued for new hospitality projects in already-developed areas.

Many speciality coffee shops keep a small quantity of Kopi Luwak in stock, although its price keeps most enthusiasts from tasting it. Paying €150 for a 500-gram bag is not unusual. Yet the name Kopi Luwak does not refer to a coffee variety, but to a unique method of production. The raw coffee cherries are eaten by the Indonesian palm civet, pass through its digestive tract, and are later collected, thoroughly cleaned, and roasted.

It is a remarkable process — and one that may not appeal to everyone. Even though no trace of the animal’s excretion remains in the final product, the very idea can deter some from taking a sip. Moreover, as the coffee’s fame has grown, particularly among celebrities, some producers have industrialised the process. Instead of freely roaming the plantations, civets are often kept in cages to make collection easier. For those concerned about animal welfare, it is worth verifying the origin of the beans or choosing another coffee variety altogether.

An acquired taste

Coffee specialists agree that civet coffee offers a noticeably different flavour profile. Because Kopi Luwak refers to the process rather than the bean itself, the taste can vary widely depending on the original coffee used. Nevertheless, compared with their non-digested counterparts, civet beans are typically smoother, less bitter, and often described as having chocolate and caramel notes.

Scientists have long attributed these differences to the civet’s digestive process, but the exact explanation has remained unclear. A new study from the Central University of Kerala in India has now revealed how fermentation inside the civet’s gut alters the fat composition of the beans, shaping their distinctive flavour.

“Civet beans had significantly higher fat levels, particularly in capric and caprylic acid methyl esters, which affect aroma and flavour,” the researchers wrote. “Elevated protein, caffeine, and specific acid levels in civet beans can be attributed to digestive and fermentative processes, with Gluconobacter species in the civet gut playing a key role. These minor differences in metabolite composition could influence flavour differences in the final roasted coffee, as they are affected by the civets’ digestion and fermentation procedures.”

These fatty acid methyl esters are well-known in the food industry for producing a dairy-like aroma, which may explain Kopi Luwak’s distinctive smoothness. The researchers note, however, that more studies are needed to fully understand how each stage of the process affects the coffee’s complex aromas.

The incident occurred on Mount Batukaru, the second-highest peak on the island and one of its wildest areas, where adventure seekers tough enough to brave leech-infested trails are rewarded with temples and panoramic mountain views. But in late September 2025, a group of walkers met a single stray dog that managed to bite several of them on their lower bodies. The animal was later captured and euthanised. Rabies tests on the creature came back positive, meaning all the injured hikers required immediate rabies vaccines.

Regional health agency head, Surya Wira Andi, said: “Most of the victims were bitten on the feet. All of them have received the necessary vaccination, and they will complete the full three-dose regimen within a month.”

Although almost eliminated in some parts of the world, rabies is a zoonotic virus that remains rife in Indonesia, and the problem is reported to have worsened when COVID-19 interrupted vaccination programmes. Litter on hiking trails and offerings left at temples that attract wild and stray animals are also said to be contributing to the issue by attracting creatures into territories shared with each other and humans.

Affecting mammals including dogs, cats, livestock, monkeys, humans, and other species, rabies attacks the central nervous system and brain, causing inflammation. Symptoms include headaches, fever, and eventually hydrophobia (fear of water) and photophobia (fear of light). Once the onset of symptoms is experienced, the disease is usually fatal. However, following up any bite with an immediate anti-rabies vaccine or serum has brought down fatality rates.

Over 34,000 bites from animals suspected to carry rabies were recorded in Bali in the first six months of 2025 alone, resulting in 12 human deaths. Those figures, and the recent attack, have prompted an emergency vaccination drive.

Tabanan Agriculture Agency has confirmed the vaccination of around 500 pet and stray dogs, as well as a rescue and relocation programme to prevent the spread of rabies to the rest of the island’s wildlife. Agency livestock and animal health head, Gede Eka Parta Ariana, told press that the agency is working in collaboration with local non-governmental groups to focus on so-called “red zone” areas, where there is a high alert for rabies transmission.

“At least nine stray dogs around the area have also been rescued and taken to an animal shelter by a team from a local non-governmental organisation working in collaboration with our agency,” he said, speaking to The Jakarta Post.

Anyone who encounters a stray or wild animal while at home or travelling abroad should avoid any contact with it, if at all possible. If a bite or scratch does ensue, it is vital to thoroughly clean and disinfect the wound straight away, alert authorities, and seek prompt medical attention from health workers who can administer vaccines.

At least 18 people were killed, and nine cities, including the provincial capital of Denpasar in the central south of the island, were submerged after heavy rainfall made rivers burst their banks, according to a statement by Bali’s Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Environmental campaigners and experts have issued repeated warnings about the over-exploitation of Bali for tourism purposes. The government responded by publishing a list of guidelines around tourist taxes, sacred sites, the use of licensed guides and accommodation, dress etiquette, and littering – all aimed at ensuring “Bali’s tourism remains respectful, sustainable, and in harmony with our local values,” in the words of Governor Wayan Koster in March 2025.

Now it is likely that regulations will go further. Indonesia’s state news agency, Antara, reported Koster saying: “After handling the floods, we will meet again to ensure no more permits are issued for hotels, restaurants, or other facilities on productive land, especially rice fields.” The intervention will begin “this year,” Koster said, adding that “the land conversion ban will align with Bali’s 100-year plan. From 2025 onward, no productive land can be converted into commercial facilities.”

Under the proposed rules, land development for private residences will still be allowed, subject to planning approval, but commercial building works would be prohibited. Perhaps counter-intuitively, Bali’s environment minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has described the moratorium on new restaurants, hotels, and commercial facilities as “crucial for Bali’s tourism,” noting that “the recent flooding has drawn serious attention.”

His words echo those of Santorini’s mayor Nikos Zorzos, who in 2024 called on the Greek government to “halt the construction of all types of hotel units, short-term rentals, and especially strategic investments, not only for the caldera but for the entire island of Santorini.” If tourism were not managed in a more “rational” way, Zorzos warned, the island’s popularity with visitors and therefore its economic success would ultimately be threatened as overtourism “consumes the place and reduces its advantage as a destination.”

In Bali, which welcomed 2.9 million foreign visitors through Bali airport alone in the first half of 2025, the number of hotels grew by seven percent in the four years between 2019 and 2023, to reach a total of 541 on a territory of 5,633 km².

The new police force, the Bali Immigration Patrol Task Force, or Satgas, has been deployed to conduct these spot checks. Comprising 100 officers on motorcycles and in cars, the task force operates across ten of the island’s busiest tourist areas. These include Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Ubud, Kuta, Sanur, Benoa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, and the popular surfing beaches of Uluwatu and Bingin.

The task force works in cooperation with the military, the police, law-and-order agencies and Bali’s customary security officials, known as pecalang. Officers are easily recognisable in navy or black uniforms marked ‘Immigration’ and are equipped with body cameras.

Excessive tourism, fuelled by the post-COVID boom, seems to be driving the surge in unruly behaviour.

Ida Bagus Raka Suadarna, a professor of economics and business at the University of National Education in Denpasar, told This Week in Asia that “current law enforcement agencies are not yet effective… The task force has special duties and funds, and new efforts will be made to specifically monitor foreign tourists”.

Under the new policy, officers are authorised to stop foreigners anywhere – on the roads, on the beaches or at checkpoints – and demand to see passports or stay permits (KITAS). This measure was introduced on the orders of President Prabowo Subianto, with Immigration Minister Agus Andrianto saying that it was intended to “ensure stability and security in Bali, one of Indonesia’s top tourist destinations”.

Videos shared by the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office show officers stopping tourists and reprimanding them for not carrying passports or permits. At the time of writing, no fines had yet been issued.

The initiative is also a direct response to growing concerns about foreigners engaging in illegal business activities on the island. Visitors have been accused of subletting flats, running unlicensed guesthouses or boarding houses, and even renting out luxury villas without permits. Chusnunia Chalim, vice-chairwoman of the parliamentary commission that oversees tourism, has warned that such practices risk “increasing economic inequality and reducing the opportunities available to Balinese people in the tourism sector”.

The legal basis is clear: carrying immigration documents is mandatory under Law No. 6 (2011), and failure to do so can result in a fine under Article 116. Officers are also entitled to check whether tourists have paid the new IDR 150,000 (approximately €8.50) tourism levy, which was introduced in February.

The initiative has divided opinion. Some locals welcome it and would like to see spot checks extended to indoor spaces such as yoga studios and co-working hubs; others fear it could deter visitors and that the presence of uniformed officers could make tourists feel anxious.

As for the visitors themselves, one tourist commented under an official Instagram post that “carrying an actual passport around is ridiculous. It’s one of the most unsafe things to do, and 99% of people won’t be carrying one”.

Tourism is crucial for Indonesia. Last year, the country received nearly 14 million foreign tourists, generating US$16.7 billion, which accounts for around 4% of its GDP. Bali alone attracted 6.3 million visitors, which is more than its population of 4.3 million.

Two explosions at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki released smoke and gas columns reaching up to 18 km high and showering neighbouring villages with ash and dust. Lava and rocks have been distributed up to five kilometres around the mountain, according to the national Geology Agency.  No one has been reported as injured.

Flight cancellations and disruption

Though a Ngurah Rai International Airport Bali airport spokesperson initially said its airspace remained clear, four domestic routes were cancelled, as well as over two dozen flights between Bali and Australia, Singapore and South Korea, while numerous others were delayed. The airports in Maumere and Larantuka in East Nusa Tenggara province remain shut through Tuesday.

Geology Agency head, Muhammad Wafid, explained: “An eruption of that size certainly carries a higher potential for danger, including its impact on aviation.” Airlines have apologised for the impact on customers whom they said they would contact directly in case of an issue with their flight. Indonesia AirAsia, Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia are among the worst affected carriers.

10,000 people in hard-to-breathe zone

Wafid also told the Associated Press officials would likely need to reconsider safety measures in the volcano’s area and “reevaluate to enlarge its danger zone that must be cleared of villagers and tourist activities.” Around 10,000 people are thought to be in harm’s way. Locals have reported painful breathing due to sulphur and ash in the air. They have been told to shelter indoors.

Indonesia is no stranger to active volcanoes, earthquakes and other seismic activity, located on some of the most notorious seismic zones in the world, such as the Pacific Ring of Fire and the Alpide Belt. Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki has notched up 427 eruptions this year.

Travel advisories and insurance

Authorities elsewhere are warning tourists of the risks involved travelling to volcanic regions. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) does not include any remarks about the recent seismic activity, but it Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki features first on a list of six volcanoes to which the British government advises against all travel. The others are:

• Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra to within 5km of the crater
• Mount Marapi, West Sumatra to within 3km of the crater
• Mount Semeru, East Java to within 5km of the crater and to within 500m from any riverbank of the Besuk Kobokan river for 13km from the crater
• Mount Ruang, Northern Sulawesi to within 7km of the crater
• Mount Ibu, North Maluku Province to within 7km of the crater

The advice against travel means insurance companies could refuse to pay out for disrupted or cancelled journeys and holidays. Airlines and tour operators are responsible for reasonable costs and should offer alternative flights and emergency accommodation.

The eruption took place on Tuesday afternoon in the East Nusa Tenggara province and was followed by another smaller eruption early on Wednesday, prompting the authorities to raise the alert level to its highest of a four-tiered system status, and expand evacuation areas. The ash cloud from the volcano led to the cancellation or rerouting of dozens of international flights to Bali due to safety concerns.

“The height of the eruption column was observed at approximately 10,000 metres above the summit. The ash column was observed to be grey with thick intensity,” the National Disaster Management Agency said, after the alert level was raised.

Several airlines, including Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Air India, and Air New Zealand were forced to cancel flights to Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Passengers travelling between Bali and cities in Australia, India, Singapore, Malaysia and China experienced significant delays. Jetstar stated it was monitoring conditions closely and hoped to resume operations later on Wednesday, depending on ash movements. 

“Impacted customers have been notified directly and provided a range of options. At this stage, forecasts show the ash cloud is expected to clear by later tonight. As a result, this afternoon’s flights will be delayed to operate later this evening,” the Jetstar statement read.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency confirmed that ash had dispersed as far as 10km into the atmosphere, deep into commercial airspace, posing a severe risk to jet engines. Avi Hallan, the agency’s representative, told Reuters that the villages had been evacuated. “Streets in the two villages were filled with thick ash, gravel, and sand,” she stated, adding that no casualties were reported.

Ash fall was reported in a number of villages outside the Disaster-Prone Area radius, including Boru, Hewa, and Watobuku. Residents of Nurabelen and Nileknoheng were evacuated, as the authorities expanded the exclusion zone to an 8km radius around the crater. Volcanologists also withdrew staff from an observation post about 7km from the mountain due to heightened activity and safety risks. 

No injuries or fatalities were reported as of Wednesday afternoon, but the situation remains volatile. Authorities urged people in the surrounding areas to take precautions and remain alert: “The public and tourists are advised not to carry out activities within a radius of 7km and the southwest-northeast sector 8 km from the eruption center.”

“People around disaster-prone areas should be aware of the potential for lava floods if heavy rain occurs,” officials warned. “Residents affected by ash rain are advised to use masks or nose and mouth covers,” the statement said.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is the larger part of the twin Lewotobi volcano complex, alongside the smaller Lewotobi Perempuan peak. The volcano has shown frequent activity in recent years, with eruptions recorded as recently as March and November 2024. The November eruption killed 10 people, destroyed buildings, including a convent of Catholic nuns, and led to large-scale evacuations as it spewed a column of lava and hot ash into nearby villages. 

Indonesia is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire” and has more than 120 active volcanoes, making it one of the most seismically active countries in the world.

Air travel is expected to gradually resume once the ash cloud dissipates and visibility improves. Travellers have been advised to check with airlines for the latest updates and remain cautious amid the ongoing volcanic activity.

The region’s recovery is further underscored by the stabilisation of hotel occupancy rates across the Asia-Pacific, where by early 2024, it stood at around 65%, signalling a return of travellers’ confidence.

A report, presented by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, highlighted progress in key areas like tourism insights, investments and innovation, education, and UN Tourism’s local support, all geared towards building a more ‘resilient and sustainable tourism sector’. 

Emphasising the crucial role of innovation and youth empowerment, Pololikashvili stressed that “Asia and the Pacific are one of the most dynamic regions on Earth… a hub of digital transformation, new ideas and innovators. And the future looks very bright indeed”.

As tourism returned to contributing over 12% of Southeast Asia’s GDP in 2023, just above its pre-pandemic share, the industry has a clear and pressing need to future-proof itself. Demand for sustainable travel is not only driven by policy, it is also being influenced by changing consumer preferences.

A growing segment of affluent Asian travellers now prioritises wellness, eco-conscious travel and immersive cultural experiences over luxury shopping, signalling a wider shift in what tourism means and values in the region. This evolution in traveller behaviour is a key strategic focus for governments and institutions alike, with a focus on economic revival, climate awareness and cultural integrity.

As Malaysia prepares to host World Tourism Day in September 2025, Asia’s tourism sector finds itself at a defining crossroads, where innovation, sustainability, and changing expectations could reshape the region’s global identity as a travel leader for decades to come.
