International tourist arrivals rose by 2% in the first quarter of 2026 despite mounting geopolitical and economic uncertainty, demonstrating the resilience of the global travel sector.

According to the latest data from UN Tourism, a total of 307 million tourists travelled internationally between January and March, around six million more than during the same period in 2025. Travel demand remained strong at the start of the year, with cumulative growth of 2.5% in January and February, before slowing sharply in March as the Middle East conflict disrupted travel patterns and air connectivity.

UN Tourism warned that the conflict is likely to reduce growth in international tourist arrivals by 1 to 2 percentage points below its initial forecast of 3% to 4% for 2026. The organization said disruptions to flights, weaker traveller confidence, higher oil prices and shortages of jet fuel in some markets have pushed up airfares and reduced flight capacity beyond the region itself. More expensive travel and uncertainty over connectivity could encourage travellers to choose destinations closer to home while also dampening overall demand.

“The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is disrupting travel patterns well beyond the region itself, including rising inflation, particularly in transport and accommodation. This is placing pressure on travelers, businesses and destinations alike,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais.

“Even amid this uncertainty, international tourism continued to show resilience in the first quarter of 2026, with 307 million people travelling internationally, a 2% increase on last year. At a time of growing geopolitical and economic pressure, this reinforces tourism’s wider role in supporting economies, creating opportunity and sustaining communities far beyond the sector itself,” she added.

Europe and Africa recorded the strongest regional performances during the quarter, with both regions posting 4% growth in international arrivals. Europe welcomed more than 130 million international tourists, while some destinations benefited from shifts in travel flows. Africa’s growth was supported by strong results in North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Asia and the Pacific registered a 3% increase in arrivals, although growth slowed in March as disruptions at Middle Eastern air hubs contributed to a sharp decline in South Asia. The Americas saw arrivals rise by 2%, led by strong growth in Central America, while the Middle East experienced a 14% decline as the conflict affected several Gulf destinations. Egypt was a notable exception, reporting a 16% increase in arrivals.

According to UN Tourism’s latest survey of tourism experts, the Middle East conflict, rising transport and accommodation costs, and broader economic pressures are the main challenges facing the industry in 2026. The organization’s Confidence Index nevertheless points to cautious optimism for the Northern Hemisphere summer season, although experts continue to highlight uncertainty surrounding the duration and scope of the conflict, as well as concerns over fuel prices, flight disruptions and consumer confidence.

Tourism destinations across the world are already feeling the effects of climate change, with rising sea levels, shifting weather patterns and ecosystem disruption reshaping how places operate long before new global climate decisions are implemented. Destinations are experiencing changes in seasonality, environmental stability and infrastructure pressure that directly influence how tourism functions on the ground. These changes are no longer abstract projections, but visible realities affecting both natural environments and the visitor experience. As Oguzhan Bahadir Ari, President of Eurovia, notes, “impacts that were once discussed as a distant future, when climate change was still framed as something far ahead rather than already unfolding, are happening now.”

In very different regions, the signs of transformation are already clear. Christian Clauwers, visual storyteller, EU Climate Pact Ambassador and founder of the Society for Environmental Awareness (SEA), pointed to examples from across the world that illustrate how climate change is already affecting communities and destinations. In Lofoten, traditional fishing and drying practices that depend on stable cold air conditions are being disrupted by shifting temperatures and weather patterns. In the Arctic, melting ice and changing ecosystems are altering both wildlife behaviour and local ways of life. In the Pacific, island states such as Tuvalu are facing rising sea levels that threaten freshwater supplies and agricultural production, forcing in some cases the full import of drinking water.

These realities are increasingly shaping discussions around COP31, the next United Nations Climate Change Conference in Antalya. These issues were also explored during the high-level event “Road to COP31: A Shared Future from Brussels to Antalya” at the Press Club Brussels Europe, organised by the Society for Environmental Awareness (SEA) in collaboration with the Sustainable Future Platform and Travel Tomorrow, which brought together policymakers, scientists and industry representatives. The focus is shifting from long-term climate targets towards immediate adaptation and resilience, especially in regions already under pressure. Coastal tourism destinations across Europe illustrate this intersection clearly, as they depend heavily on stable seasons, water availability and predictable environmental conditions that are becoming less reliable. Rising flood risks and growing pressure on infrastructure and insurance systems highlight how climate impacts are moving from environmental concerns into economic and operational challenges for destinations.

A recurring issue in these discussions is the gap between scientific knowledge and political action. Climate science has been warning about these developments for decades, yet implementation often remains slow or fragmented. “The knowledge is there, the political will is missing, and until that changes, scientific evidence alone will not be enough to drive meaningful action,” highlighted Bart Rymen, Belgium’s IPCC focal point. This gap is further widened by misinformation and limited climate literacy, which continue to shape public understanding of climate risks. International coordination remains essential, as climate impacts do not respect national borders. Pressure is increasing not only from scientists, but also from younger generations who are demanding faster and more visible action.

Traditional media dynamics are also shaping how climate debates are framed. Hans Bruyninckx, Professor of Environmental Governance at the University of Antwerp and former Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, noted that journalists regularly ask him to participate in discussions with climate deniers, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change. “There is no point in that debate, the real discussion lies within the complexity of the climate challenge itself rather than in questioning its existence.” He also pointed to a lack of investigative climate journalism, a problem he linked to financial pressures on traditional media outlets. Instead of presenting climate science as a two-sided debate, he argued that journalism has an important role to play in helping the public understand the complexity and urgency of the issue.

While environmental warnings have been consistent for decades, it is often economic consequences that finally push climate change higher on the political agenda. Policymakers tend to respond more quickly when environmental risks begin to affect financial stability, public services or security. One of the clearest examples can be found in the insurance sector, where climate risks are increasingly reflected in both current claims and future projections. According to industry assessments, Belgium could see around 40% more flood-related insurance cases by 2040. In some regions around the world, obtaining insurance is already becoming more difficult, creating knock-on effects for housing, investment and access to loans. Environmental risks often become politically urgent only when they translate into economic consequences, even though the scientific evidence has been available for decades.

Prof. Dr. Hans Bruynincx © Tony da Silva

Alongside these risks, there is a growing focus on ecological resilience and circular economy models as part of long-term solutions. Ecological resilience refers to the ability of natural systems to absorb shocks and recover, while the circular economy focuses on reducing waste and keeping resources in use for longer. Instead of relying on linear systems of consumption and disposal, destinations are increasingly exploring ways to integrate nature-based solutions. “Wetlands and mangroves can act as living barriers, absorbing wave energy and softening the impact of floods
and coastal erosion before they reach human settlements,” explained Gudrun De Boeck, Head of the ECOSPHERE Research Group at the University of Antwerp.

Dr. Gudrun De Boeck © Tony da Silva

Tourism itself is also evolving in response to these pressures. In Türkiye, examples such as Club Marvy illustrate how tourism can move towards more integrated and locally rooted models. Rather than focusing only on visitor volume, this approach connects guests with local food systems, markets and cultural practices. It encourages a form of travel that is more participatory, where tourism becomes part of local life instead of being separated from it.

Meltem Acar, Vice President – Brand & Strategic Marketing, Club Marvy © Tony da Silva

Communication is another key part of this transition, especially as climate change can still feel distant or abstract to many travellers. Scientific data alone is often not enough to convey urgency or complexity in a way that resonates widely. This is where journalism and visual storytelling play an important role. The exhibition “The Fragile Frontlines of a Warming World”, curated by Ipek Tekdemir and featuring the work of Christian Clauwers, aims to make environmental change visible through photography from regions already under pressure.

Christian Clauwers © Tony da Silva

COP31 is increasingly positioned as more than another milestone in a long series of international climate negotiations. While agreements such as the Paris Agreement established global ambition, the challenge today lies in turning commitments into practical action at a time when climate impacts are already visible across tourism destinations. “Good leaders lead from the back, stronger economies and institutions, like the EU should actively support countries that are less equipped to deal with the consequences of climate change,” Daniel Cervenka, Director of The Convergence and CEO of Resolve Global. As COP31 approaches, attention is shifting from what has been agreed on paper to what can actually be delivered on the ground, with destinations already adapting to climate pressures through infrastructure planning, resource management and new tourism models.

During the 1970s, the late physicist and Nobel laureate Richard Feynman developed a mathematical solution for a common decision-making problem. Fifty years later, a team of scientists deciphered his handwritten notes, telling us exactly when to stop looking for the best holiday restaurant.

It was during a meal with his friend Ralph Leighton at a Thai restaurant in California that Richard Feynman encountered a common problem. As Leighton was hesitating between ordering his favourite ginger chicken meal or trying a new dish, Feynman decided to jump on the occasion and turn the problem into a mathematical problem.

Richard Feynman’s handwritten notes detailing the restaurant problem.

Sadly, however, his handwritten notes remained a mystery for decades, until a team of scientists got interested in the matter and decided to find out Feynman’s solution. On 1 June 2026, the researchers from Oxford, Princeton, and the City University of New York published their findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“The notes remained inscrutable for decades, until we managed to decipher them and reconstruct Feynman’s original problem and solution,” the team explains.

After deciphering the formula, the scientists decide to apply the reasoning to another problem than that originally intended by Feynman. Instead of focusing on whether or not one should choose a favourite dish or try something new, the researchers tried to define when travellers should stop looking for the best – or a better – restaurant.

When applying Feynman’s solution, holidaymakers should try a different restaurant each night but only until they manage to find a spot exceeding a particular threshold, depending on the desired quality. Although the threshold is not fixed, it decreases as one’s days left in a certain destination decrease.

“The thresholds are being guided by the best thing you might be able to find if you kept looking.? If you have a long time to look, finding something amazing has a lot of value because you can go back many times”, professor Tom Griffiths of Princeton University, co-author of the study, told The Guardian.

© Christian, B. et al.

According to Griffiths, by deciding on an initial threshold and decreasing that threshold once the end of the trip gets closer, travellers will effectively apply a simplified yet effective version of Feynman’s formula, as you get closer to the end [of a trip]. And as long as you are doing something like that, that’ll actually work pretty well.”

“A preregistered experiment with 2,520 participants shows that people adopt thresholds that decrease linearly with the proportion of trials remaining, consistent with the observation of linear thresholds in other optimal stopping problems. However, we show that people tend to explore more than predicted by linear thresholds, and that different distributions of quality result in thresholds with the same slope but different intercepts. These results indicate that people adapt linear thresholds used in optimal stopping tasks in a way that is sensitive to the underlying distribution—a simple strategy that we show is nearly as effective as Feynman’s solution,” the researchers write.

In other words, travellers should not hesitate to switch restaurants at the start of their trip, as chances are they might stumble across better options. However, once the end nears, sticking to old favourites might be a better idea.

In order to make the visit even more worthwhile for kids, AfricaMuseum has developed the AfricaMuseumQuest. The museum game starts with an unexpected visit from two guests from the distant future. Players have to guess and puzzle their way through the various museum rooms, studying several objects from the permanent collection, and help them out of their predicament. The AfricaMuseumQuest is ideal for 2 to 7 people aged 12 and above, with the average game lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterwards, players are free to explore the museum at their own pace.

Overall, the 12.8-kilometre walk guides hikers along the narrow Voerwegje, the majestic Tervuren Park, a very old road that connected Namur to Mechelen, and through a vast landscape of fields with magnificent views. With such a varied landscape, children can’t be but entertained all along.

For those whose hiking-appetite still isn’t satisfied, Visit Tervuren has put together a whole overview with all the different hiking routes in and around Tervuren. Some of them also include Geocaching locations, providing visitors with yet another way of discovering the town in a fun and active way.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to get them interested in something else, children just want to run around with their friends at a (well-equipped) playground. For such cases, the playground located at the Royal Vegetable Garden in Tervuren could hardly be more perfect.

Located right in the centre of town yet adjacent to Tervuren Park, it is the ideal place for the youngest members of the family to blow off steam while climbing, jumping and running in all directions. Meanwhile, those who are less interested in such active pastimes can lounge around on the lawn or even settle on one of the nearby terraces.

Booking.com has released the sixth edition of its European Accommodation Barometer, giving an overview of how accommodation providers across Europe view the current market and the year ahead. The report is based on responses from 1,240 executives and managers across 24 European markets in the hospitality sector. It shows an industry that continues to recover and adapt after several years of major disruption. Most businesses report a positive outlook, but the findings also show that not all parts of the sector are moving at the same pace. Differences between large hotel chains and independent properties are becoming more visible in both financial results and future expectations.

Overall sentiment in the European accommodation sector remains positive, with 66% of businesses expecting strong performance in the next tourism season. Around 60% say they are currently in a good financial position, which suggests a stable base for growth. Occupancy levels are also improving, with 50% of businesses reporting increases compared to the previous year. At the same time, 40% report higher average daily rates, which is slightly lower than in 2025 when 43% saw price increases. This shows that demand is still present, but price growth is becoming more moderate. The industry appears steady, but not evenly strong across all segments.

© Booking.com

A key finding of the report is the widening gap between hotel chains and independent accommodation providers. Large chains consistently report stronger results across key indicators. Around 72% of hotel chains describe their financial situation as positive, compared to 55% of independent businesses. Performance differences also appear in room pricing and occupancy levels. About 47% of chains report higher room rates, while only 37% of independents see the same trend. In terms of occupancy, 56% of chains report growth compared to 46% of independent properties. These differences suggest that scale and resources are becoming more important in determining how well businesses perform in the current market.

The report also highlights cybersecurity as one of the most important challenges facing the sector. Overall, 66% of European accommodation providers feel prepared to deal with cyber threats. However, this confidence is much higher among larger businesses. Almost all companies with more than 250 employees, at 94%, say they are well prepared, compared to only 60% of small businesses with fewer than ten employees. Smaller properties are also less likely to invest in staff training, regular system audits, and external cybersecurity support. Only 49% of small businesses offer cybersecurity training, compared to 89% of larger companies. This gap suggests that smaller operators may face more difficulty in keeping up with growing digital risks, especially as cyberattacks become more advanced and targeted.

© Booking.com

Concerns about cyber threats are also reflected in expectations for the next tourism season. Around 21% of small businesses see cyberattacks as a major risk, compared to just 9% of larger companies. Payment fraud follows a similar pattern, with 25% of smaller businesses expressing concern compared to 16% of larger operators. While larger companies report more cybersecurity incidents overall, this likely reflects better monitoring systems and higher exposure due to scale. Smaller businesses, on the other hand, may experience fewer reported incidents but also have fewer tools to detect and respond to them.

Beyond digital risks, external disruptions are also shaping expectations for the coming year. Around 37% of accommodation providers are concerned about extreme weather events or natural disasters that could affect travel demand. In addition, 32% point to local disruptions such as transport strikes or infrastructure work that could limit access to destinations. These concerns show that external factors are becoming a regular part of business planning in tourism. Weather and transport issues are no longer seen as rare events but as ongoing risks that need to be managed throughout the year.

Managing seasonality remains a key priority across the sector. Around 72% of businesses offer discounts or special packages during off-peak periods to attract more guests. Online platforms are widely seen as effective tools for generating demand, with 81% of providers relying on them during low occupancy periods. Marketing strategies also include social media, used by 54% of businesses, paid advertising at 50%, email campaigns at 41%, and traditional media at 34%.

This mix shows that accommodation providers are using multiple channels to reach potential guests, rather than relying on a single approach. Event-driven tourism is also becoming more important, with 50% of businesses reporting benefits from events and special occasions. Among those, 66% saw higher revenue per available room, while 60% reported increased bookings during slower periods.

Spanish hotel group Meliá is scaling back its presence in Cuba, ceasing management, marketing and branding services for 15 hotels.

The decision was announced through Meliá’s Portuguese subsidiary, Ilha Bela Gestão e Turismo, which said a combination of “unforeseen circumstances” had undermined the viability of the operations.

The company pointed to growing concerns over the legal certainty, security and economic stability of its Cuban business, prompting it to withdraw from the affected hotels. The move marks another blow to the island’s struggling tourism sector amid geopolitical pressures in the Middle East.

Meliá, one of the largest foreign hotel operators in Cuba, has been present on the island since the early 1990s. However, contributions to the group’s earnings have declined sharply in recent years, with most of the properties affected by the withdrawal already closed or out of operation.

The company emphasised that the decision was taken with a “deep sense of corporate responsibility” as external factors increasingly constrained normal operations.

The withdrawal comes as the U.S. intensifies pressure on Cuba through tougher sanctions and measures. The Trump administration has set 5 June as a deadline for foreign companies to cut ties with businesses linked to GAESA, the island’s military-run conglomerate, which controls a significant share of the Cuban economy.

According to Reuters, sanctions target entities operating in sectors such as energy, defence, mining and financial services, as well as those providing funds or services to individuals designated by Washington, including military officer Ana Guillermina Lastres, a GAESA director.

Foreign companies operating hotels associated with GAESA have faced growing scrutiny, prompting several hospitality groups to reconsider their presence on the island. Despite the withdrawal, Meliá said it is working to ensure an orderly transition from the affected properties and to keep suppliers, customers and other stakeholders informed throughout the process.

According to Euronews, Iberostar has stopped operating and marketing 12 properties in Cuba as of 1 June, ending contractual ties with assets managed by the Gaviota Tourism Group, GAESA’s operational arm, while saying it will retain a limited presence in hotels not affected by sanctions-related restrictions. Canadian chain Blue Diamond had earlier announced it was ending its operations in Cuba, where it managed 62 properties.

The downturn reflects the broader struggles of Cuba’s tourism industry, which has been hampered by recurring power outages, fuel shortages and weaker visitor demand, remaining below pre-pandemic levels and undermining recovery efforts.

The challenges extend beyond the hotel sector. Spanish carrier Iberia recently suspended its direct Madrid–Havana route until at least November, citing fuel supply issues. Air Canada, Air France and Turkish Airlines have also temporarily suspended operations to Cuba due to similar logistical constraints, further complicating efforts to attract visitors. Meanwhile, Air Canada has operated special flights to repatriate around 3,000 stranded passengers.

Cuba received 328,608 international tourists in the first four months of the year, a 55.8% decline compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI). In April alone, arrivals fell to just 30,551 visitors.

The downturn follows an already difficult 2025 for the country’s tourism sector, which recorded 1.8 million visitors — the lowest annual figure since 2002, excluding the pandemic period.

For Cuba, the loss of one of its most prominent foreign hotel partners underscores the growing difficulties of sustaining tourism investment amid economic hardship, international sanctions and declining connectivity with key overseas markets.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is expected to become one of the biggest drivers of tourism growth in North America. Hosted across Canada, the United States and Mexico, the tournament is already influencing travel demand months before kickoff. “It is a unique opportunity for North America to accelerate tourism growth, strengthen connectivity and showcase the region to millions of travellers around the world,” said Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the WTTC. Travel demand, hotel bookings and air connectivity are all expected to benefit from the influx of visitors.

Canada is expected to emerge as the biggest beneficiary of the tournament in terms of tourism growth. The WTTC forecasts a 6.4% increase in tourism GDP for the country, ahead of Mexico and the United States. Business travel data also points to a sharp rise in demand, with bookings to Canadian World Cup destinations increasing significantly compared with last year. Toronto stands out as the country’s strongest performer, with combined hotel and flight spending linked to the tournament rising dramatically. At the same time, flight prices to Canada have fallen, making the destination more attractive for both leisure and corporate travellers.

Business travel is becoming one of the strongest forces behind the World Cup tourism boom. Data from business travel platform Navan shows that hotel and flight bookings to Canadian host cities have nearly tripled compared with the same period last year. “Companies are embracing the World Cup as the ultimate can’t miss event,” according to Dane Molter, Senior Vice President of Navan Group Travel Marketplace. Businesses are increasingly using the tournament as an opportunity to meet clients, host events, and strengthen commercial relationships. Travellers are also booking much earlier than usual, reflecting the intense competition for flights and accommodation during the tournament period.

Mexico is also entering the World Cup year with strong tourism momentum. According to WTTC figures, the country recorded the strongest tourism performance in North America in 2025. International arrivals increased by more than 6%, while visitor spending also rose, outperforming both Canada and the United States on several key indicators. Although Canada is expected to record the largest tourism growth during the tournament itself, Mexico enters the event from a position of strength. The World Cup is therefore likely to build on an already expanding tourism sector rather than reverse a slowdown.

The United States, despite hosting the largest number of matches, enters the tournament with a more complex tourism picture. Recent figures show the country welcomed more than four million fewer international visitors in 2025 than the year before. Several factors may help explain the softer performance, including weaker inbound demand and concerns among some travellers about entry procedures and travel conditions. As a result, the United States is expected to record tourism growth linked to the World Cup, but at a lower rate than its neighbours.

At the same time, demand linked directly to the tournament remains strong. Hotel and flight bookings to US host cities continue to rise, while average hotel prices have increased by around 30%. Destinations such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago remain major gateways for international visitors and business travellers. The San Francisco Bay Area and the New York-New Jersey region are among the most popular destinations for corporate travel during the tournament period.

Some uncertainty remains around international travel operations in the United States. Recent proposals concerning customs processing at certain airports have prompted discussion within the travel industry about how major gateways could manage the expected influx of visitors. Industry groups have argued that smooth border procedures and efficient airport operations will be essential to maximise the benefits of the tournament. Because many international routes rely on a small number of major hubs, even limited disruptions can have wider effects across the aviation network. Travel organisations have also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive visitor experience during one of the world’s most-watched sporting events.

Beyond leisure travel, the tournament is expected to generate substantial economic benefits across North America. The WTTC estimates that the travel and tourism sector will support nearly 31 million jobs across the region in 2026. Increased visitor spending is expected to benefit hotels, airlines, restaurants, attractions and local businesses. The event is also encouraging investment in tourism infrastructure, aviation capacity and digital services designed to improve the travel experience. These improvements could continue to benefit destinations long after the final match has been played.

Industry leaders see the World Cup as an opportunity to create a lasting legacy for tourism across North America. Greater connectivity between the three host nations, improved transport links and increased international visibility could help strengthen the region’s appeal for years to come. While Canada currently appears best positioned to capitalise on the tournament-driven surge in demand, all three host countries stand to benefit from one of the largest global sporting events ever staged. The World Cup may ultimately become as significant for the region’s tourism sector as it is for football itself.

No two European countries are alike, and the same goes for the price of a holiday rental. A new data analysis by AirDNA shows the cheapest and most expensive countries to book a stay in 2026.

Generally speaking, booking a holiday is no cheap affair. Transportation can cost a lot, meals can add up, and the average price of a holiday rental varies widely depending on where one chooses to go.

In order to identify where travellers are paying the highest premiums, where budget-conscious guests can still find strong value, and what the data reveals about the markets generating the strongest revenue opportunities for hosts, short-term rental data and analytics platform AirDNA has made a handy overview of Europe’s cheapest and most expensive countries for holiday rentals in 2026. Average daily rates, booking lead times, occupancy, and length-of-stay trends across Europe were taken into account to make the ranking as clear as possible.

Europe’s most expensive countries for holiday rentals in 2026:

Monaco (€417 per night on average)

Iceland (€213)

Andorra (€189)

Switzerland (€184)

United Kingdom (€176)

Rather unsurprisingly, Monaco proved to be the most expensive destination concerning holiday rentals in 2026, with travellers having to pay €417 per night on average. That price can partly be explained through the small amount of listings available – 269 to be precise – and by the fact that major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix tend to drive up the prices during a specific period of time. According to AirDNA, the average booking lead time amounts to 63 days, and the average reservation runs for 3.8 nights.

© AirDNA, LLC.

Although the top three most expensive countries are completed by Iceland and Andorra, their average prices fall far behind Monaco’s. Iceland has 6,900 available listings throughout the country, 2,500 of which are located in its capital, Reykjavik. Although its median lead time of 73 days is the highest in Europe, guests tend to only stay in one place for 2.6 days on average, preferring to travel between accommodations while exploring the country.

Wedged between France and Spain, the Pyrenean principality of Andorra was able to conquer the third spot in the ranking. Mountain getaways are the most popular option, with an average daily rate of €188.57 across 1,020 available listings, and an average length of stay is 3.9 days.

Europe’s cheapest countries for holiday rentals in 2026:

Ukraine (€37)

North Macedonia (€40)

Kosovo (€42)

Moldova (€45)

Serbia (€51)

“These regions consistently top ‘best value’ lists, making them prime spots for travellers looking to stretch their euros. With fewer crowds than major hotspots, you can explore medieval fortresses, UNESCO sites, and vibrant local customs on a modest budget — and find genuine STR availability without competing against the wave of inbound tourism that defines Western European peak seasons,” AirDNA writes.

At the other end of the list, AirDNA’s map mentions Ukraine as Europe’s cheapest country for holiday rentals in 2026. Given the ongoing war with Russia, however, North Macedonia is put forward as the platform’s best budget choice for 2026. Counting some 5,250 active listings, the country has a median lead time of 13 days, while guests spend approximately 4.4 nights on average in their holiday rental. Kosovo and Moldova follow closely, with travellers spending respectively 4.9 and 5.4 nights on average in the same place, turning them into some of the destinations with the longest stays in Europe.

On 31 May 2026, a new stargazing experience opened its doors in the heart of Northumberland National Park in the United Kingdom. The Kielder Observatory, the Twice Brewed Inn, and actor Robson Green have joined forces in order to bring a new state-of-the-art location for the public to enjoy.

Since 2013, Northumberland National Park – which covers approximately a quarter of the county – has officially been designated as a Dark Sky Park. This means it is considered a conservation area that implements good outdoor lighting and provides dark sky programs, thus offering excellent conditions for both wildlife and stargazing fanatics.

Located in the heart of Northumberland National Park, Kielder Observatory has been offering stargazing experiences for over fifteen years. After the observatory first partnered with the Twice Brewed Inn near Hadrian’s Wall in 2025, they have now launched an entirely new stargazing experience at the pub together with Northumberland-born actor and presenter Robson Green, who gave his name to the ‘Robson’s Reflector’, the Inn’s brand-new reflective telescope.

“There’s something incredibly special about the skies in Northumberland. They make you stop, reflect and feel connected to something much bigger than yourself. Places like Kielder Observatory at Twice Brewed Inn help people experience that wonder first-hand, while also shining a light on this incredible part of the country. I’m delighted to be part of the launch,” Robson Green said.

The Kielder Observatory and the Twice Brewed Inn will function as two distinct but complementary experiences. Visitors will find a 30-seat planetarium and state-of-the-art telescopes at the pub, as well as “great food, award-winning ales, warm hospitality, and luxury accommodation.”

“Kielder Observatory has always been about creating moments of inspiration, wonder and reflection through the night sky, while making astronomy accessible to everyone. This new location allows us to reach even more people – from families and tourists to schools and communities who may never otherwise have the opportunity to engage with astronomy in this way – and create a different kind of experience combining our incredible team with the food, drink, and warm welcome of Twice Brewed Inn right next door. Northumberland’s dark skies are one of the region’s greatest natural assets, and we’re incredibly proud to continue building experiences that support tourism, education and inspiration,” said Kielder Observatory CEO Leigh Venus.

From June 2026 onwards, the pub offers a range of stargazing-themed events. From Celestial Events over Universe Full of Stars to Journey into the Cosmos and Aurora at the Inn:

Just like the night sky, the theme of the events will also change depending on the season.

Visitors can book their favourite option(s) through the Twice Brewed Inn’s website. Tickets for adults generally amount to £34.50 (€39.87) for the stargazing alone, while adding supper will bring the total price for the evening to £62 (€71.65). Every event also supports Kielder Observatory’s charitable mission, dedicated to making astronomy accessible to all.
