Celebrated on the third Monday in June, this holiday honours those who have been officially designated as National Heroes in Bermuda. National Heroes include Gladys Carlyon de Courcy Morrell, who led a 30-year movement for women’s suffrage in Bermuda starting in the 1920s, and Sir Edward Trenton Richards, a key figure in shaping the foundation of modern, inclusive Bermuda.

Bermuda’s Carnival is one of the newest and fastest-growing carnivals in the world. Established in 2015, the event attracts visitors from across the globe. But for locals, it is more than just a week of revelry — it is also a cultural and economic event that benefits the entire country. “It creates multiple employment opportunities for Bermudians, from DJs to production crews,” said Zoe Simmons, a communications ambassador for Carnival in Bermuda, during a press conference held on 13 February..

With Bermuda’s growing popularity as a tourist destination, there has been an increasing need for investment in local businesses, infrastructure, and services. Recognising this, the government has increased the 2025 Carnival grant by 26%, marking a 46% total increase since 2023.

“The Carnival in Bermuda celebrations not only represent a boost to our economy but also an invitation to the world to experience Bermuda’s unique culture. With our collective efforts and the support of the community, this year’s carnival promises to be the biggest and best yet,” said Owen Darrell, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport. During the press conference, the organizers also promised an “unforgettable celebration” including the launch of surprises, enhancements, and new innovative experiences.

Most events during Carnival week are all-inclusive, meaning that attendees have access to unlimited drinks, local food, and a lot of soca music. For the main event during the week-long festivities, visitors will be able to join one of three bands: Party People, Code Red, or Nova Mas.

“Elevate the travel experience”

The carrier, which currently has three routes connecting Hamilton, Bermuda, to the U.S. (Boston, Fort Lauderdale and White Plains), is a self-styled “business and premium leisure” service. The plan was to lease Emraer E175 planes that were formerly part of Flybe’s stable and rearrange the cabin to remove overhead storage and accomodate 30 seats across 15 rows. By doing so, the airline had boasted that from November 1, 2023, it would “elevate the travel experience for everyone and provide well-timed, traveller-centric, stress-free flights.”

Grand claims

Launching BermudAir back in July, Bermuda’s Minister of Transport, Wayne Furbert, had made bold claims about what the carrier could achieve.

As a Bermuda-based airline, BermudAir will enhance connectivity, bolster economic growth and promote travel to our beautiful island.

The airline too had seemed serious about its premium reputation, restricting ticket sales on flights where the new cabins had not been installed to just half capacity in order to create a more spacious and exclusive experience on board.

U-turn

Now though, after just 170 flights, it is backtracking. An economy option will be added to the cabin configuration, it says, making the BermudAir model a “dual-class” one, after all.

Framing the strategy change as a response to customer demand, the airline’s chief executive, Adam Scott, told Flight Global that the company has “remained steadfast in our commitment to increase air capacity for Bermuda and serve the business and tourism needs of the island.”

Some commentators have reacted with doubt about BermudAir’s ability to blend its offer without diluting its premium promise. Scott however remains confident.

“A dual-class cabin allows us to continue to deliver on that promise,” he said, adding that it gives “our guests more options to fly with BermudAir. After nearly 170 successful flights, it’s clear that there is strong demand for direct, short-haul and premium flights between Bermuda and the East Coast. We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from our guests about their experience onboard BermudAir, but guests also desire more options and flexibility.”

To begin with, the airline will only operate flights from Bermuda to Westchester County Airport, Boston and Fort Lauderdale. Starting today, the plan is to have 6 return flights per week, all days except Tuesdays, between the island and Westchester County and Boston. As of 15 September, the service to Westchester County is supposed to increase to one return flight on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and two daily return flights on the other days of the week. The route to Fort Lauderdale will only be added on 22 September, with one daily return flight on all days except Wednesdays.

The airline currently operates two Embraer 175 aircraft, fitted with 88 seats in a 2+2 per row configuration. However, to ensure the ultimate comfort of its passengers, BermudAir is only selling half of the available tickets, so each guest can have access to both window and aisle.

From 1 November, however, the airline is bound to receive its customised cabins, fitted with only 30 seats in a 1+1 per row configuration over 15 rows. The tailored seats promise to offer unparalleled freedom‚ ease of movement‚ privacy and comfort. To further increase the spaciousness of the cabin, BermudAir will remove overhead compartments, but guarantees the suites will have plenty of space for passengers to store one carry-on and one personal item.

Included in the all business class service, which the airline calls Aisle Class, are food, drinks, on board entertainment and free Wi-Fi. The menu is developed in partnership with local establishments in Bermuda, the food and beverage options showcasing “the vibrant flavours of Bermuda, allowing passengers to savour the renowned hospitality of the island while soaring through the sky”. Among the highlights are Bermuda’s Rum Swizzle, a specially crafted Dark ‘n Stormy aimed at enhancing the in-flight experience.

BermudAir offers three ticket options, depending on the number of checked-in bags and rebooking and refund flexibility. Until the customised cabins are delivered, tickets start at $199, while after 1 November, tickets will be starting at $999.

Bermuda is one of divers’ favorite places because of its extraordinary proximity to deep water. Indeed, it is possible to dive in and admire colorful fish within minutes of leaving the shoreline. However, some of the best dive sites require short boat trips, but the ride can be as short as 15 minutes.

1. Shipwreck diving 

With more than 300 shipwrecks, Bermuda is one of the best destinations of the Atlantic to admire sunken galleons. This is why it is often known as “the Shipwreck Capital of the Atlantic”.

In the past, galleons’ captains often underestimated the danger posed by coral reefs, and many vessels sunk close to Bermuda. Today, divers can explore a wide range of wrecks surrounding the island and spanning three centuries.

You can find shipwrecks basically anywhere in Bermuda. The best-preserved shipwrecks are in the eastern and northern part of Bermuda, and they are in depths of 12 to 25 meters (40 to 80 feet). If you are looking for older ships, check out the western side, where you’ll find galleons in shallow water (9 meters/30 feet).

Fewer than 40 of the 300-plus shipwrecks are named. A dozen of them is renowned for their ease of access, visual appeal, and interesting provenance. Some of the best include:

• Constellation: it is a 58 meters (192-foot) ship that sank during World War II while going to Venezuela. The author Peter Benchley based his novels “The Deep” around this wreck, which sank on the South Shore with a cargo of morphine and whisky. 
• Mary Celestia: it is a 68 meters (225-foot) steamer that sank in 1864 off the South Shore. In 2011, intact wine bottles and perfumes were found on board of this ship.
• Cristobal Colon: it is a Spanish luxury liner and the biggest of Bermuda’s wrecks (500 feet long). The ship sank in 1936 close to the north shore reef. 
• Iristo: it is a 76 meters (250-foot) Norwegian freighter that sank in 1937 off the north-eastern shore right in proximity of the coral reef. Its propeller and engine are still visible.
• North Carolina: it is a sailing ship built in Liverpool that sank in 1880 on the way to England. The ship sits upright off the West End and it is very photogenic.
• Pelinaion: it is a Greek cargo steamer that crashed on a reef off the East End during World War II.

2. Coral reefs

Bermuda can boast more than 517 km2 (200 square miles) of coral reefs populated by blue angelfish, parrotfish, lobsters and trumpetfish. Most of them are easily accessible from the South Shore. Make sure to bring an underwater case for your smartphone or an underwater camera… It’s really worth a picture!

The most spectacular and breathtaking dive spot is the so-called “Cathedral,” located off the East End near Gurnet Rock. The “Cathedral” is a huge underwater dome that includes tunnels and archways and is punctured by holes that filter sunlight. 

If you are looking for an underwater thrilling activity, consider organizing a diving at night, maybe even with a full moon! Switch off your flashlight and watch bioluminescence make the sea glow in the stillness.

In any case and anywhere you dive, remember that snapping off a chunk of coral as a souvenir is prohibited, although the temptation might be high!
