For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which takes place across Canada, the United States and Mexico, several airlines have prepared special aircraft liveries to mark the tournament. These liveries were used on flights carrying national teams or were unveiled as part of wider marketing campaigns linked to the competition. The aircraft became moving symbols of national pride, often combining football imagery with airline branding. Some designs include simple stickers, while others feature full custom liveries with national symbols and slogans.

Aerolíneas Argentinas created one of the most recognisable liveries for the tournament. The Airbus A330-202 features Lionel Messi’s number 10 on the tail, which is strongly linked to the national team captain. The aircraft also includes three stars on its fuselage, representing Argentina’s three World Cup victories. In addition, a captain’s armband was added on both engines as another football reference. These elements together highlight the country’s football history and its most famous player.

Air Algérie also introduced a special design on its Airbus A330-941, registered as 7T-VLB. The aircraft features the slogan “One Two Three Viva l’Algérie”, which is widely associated with the national team. A key visual element is the fennec fox on the tail fin, which is the national animal of Algeria. The fox is also the nickname of the national football team, making it a strong symbol of identity. The aircraft was delivered already painted with this livery before entering service on routes to Algiers.

Qatar Airways, which plays a central role in global football sponsorship, also unveiled a dedicated World Cup livery. The design was applied to a Boeing 777-3DZ(ER) and was prepared ahead of the tournament. In addition to the exterior design, the airline also decorated cabin elements to reflect the event. Unlike some temporary liveries, this aircraft is expected to continue flying after the competition ends.

In Latin America, several airlines also took part with themed aircraft. Avianca transported the Colombian national team on an Airbus A320-251N featuring the team emblem on the tail. For a later match, the team also travelled on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by the same airline. Copa Airlines introduced a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with a special Panamanian team livery chosen through an internal employee competition. The design includes an all-red colour scheme and the national team crest on the tail.

In Europe, Iberia presented a special Airbus A350-941 featuring the Spanish national team. The aircraft includes stickers of the team and the slogan “Despega un equipo, vuela un país”, which translates as “A team takes off, a country flies”. TAP Air Portugal also supported the national team with sticker decorations on an Airbus A330-941. Before departure, players took photos in front of the aircraft, an image shared by Cristiano Ronaldo on social media.

Google has introduced a new feature inside Google Earth that lets users fly around the world using a flight simulator. The tool works directly in a web browser, so there is no need to install extra software. It is currently labelled as experimental, which means it is still being tested and may change over time. The feature is designed to give users a simple way to explore the planet from above.

The simulator gives users the feeling of flying over Earth without leaving their home. As the aircraft moves, the map loads 3D buildings and detailed images of the terrain. This creates a smooth transition between different regions, such as mountains, cities and oceans. The experience is meant to feel immersive, but still simple enough for anyone to try. It does not try to fully copy real-world flying physics in detail. Instead, it focuses on allowing users to travel visually across the planet in an easy way.

Prepare for takeoff. Flight simulator is now available globally on web to all users. https://t.co/jV5ZW7BZeW

We've recently added many our most powerful professional desktop features to web. Elevation profiles, new import types, but there's always been one other feature… pic.twitter.com/s11NDaCx60
— Google Earth (@googleearth) June 12, 2026

A flight simulator is not completely new for Google Earth. A similar feature already existed in 2007, but it was hidden inside the desktop version of the software. At that time, users had to download the application before they could access it. The new version removes that barrier by making the tool available directly in a browser. The updated simulator is part of a wider effort to bring desktop features into the web version of Google Earth. According to Google, the feature was added “just for fun” alongside other improvements.

Accessing the simulator is done directly through Google Earth in a browser. Once inside, users can open the tools menu and activate the flight simulator with a few clicks. The experience immediately places them above the map, ready to begin flying over the virtual globe. Instead of complex setup steps, the tool is designed to feel quick and intuitive to launch.

Control of the aircraft is mainly handled through simple keyboard inputs. Arrow keys are used to steer and adjust direction, while speed can be increased or reduced with basic controls such as Page Up and Page Down. Users can also switch between mouse and keyboard input depending on what feels easier. Even with these simplified controls, the simulator still requires some practice before flights feel smooth and stable.

Although the simulator is easy to access, many users find it difficult to control at first. Small mistakes in movement can quickly lead to crashes or loss of direction. When this happens, the simulation simply pauses and allows the user to restart from a safe position. This removes pressure and makes experimentation easier. Online reactions show a mix of excitement and frustration. Some users enjoy the challenge, while others admit that controlling the aircraft is not easy. Still, the focus of the tool is not accuracy but entertainment and exploration. Even when flights end in crashes, users can immediately try again without penalty.

The flight simulator can appeal to people who enjoy discovering new places in a different way. It allows users to fly over destinations they may want to visit in real life. This can help them understand geography, distances and landscapes from a unique perspective. It also offers a playful way to explore regions that might otherwise be difficult to reach. The experience depends on internet performance, since images and 3D data load dynamically during flight. In areas with slower connections, some details may appear with a delay. Despite this, the simulator still provides a smooth overview of the planet for most users. It turns Google Earth into more than a map, creating a simple but engaging virtual travel experience.

Mobile connectivity on UK trains is still not reliable enough for everyday use, according to a new study by the communications regulator Ofcom. Many passengers experience weak or unstable internet while travelling, making it difficult to stream videos, scroll social media, or join video calls. The findings suggest that, for a large part of the journey, travellers are effectively disconnected from the digital world. As more people use train journeys to work remotely or stay connected on the move, internet access is increasingly becoming part of the overall travel experience.

Ofcom measured mobile performance across 24 sections of railway lines in England, Scotland and Wales. The regulator found that mobile performance was poor in between 58% and 83% of tests carried out on trains. It assessed whether passengers could reliably perform common online activities such as making video calls, browsing social media and streaming content. According to the regulator, “for too many people, stepping on board can mean going off grid”.

The study also revealed significant differences between mobile operators, although none delivered consistently strong results. EE achieved the best performance, meeting Ofcom’s standards on 42% of the railway segments tested. Three followed with 21%, while O2 and Vodafone achieved 20% and 17% respectively. Even the strongest-performing network therefore failed to meet the regulator’s benchmark on most routes.

To assess performance, Ofcom used a threshold that reflects basic modern internet use. A connection needed to deliver a download speed of five megabits per second, an upload speed of 1.5 megabits per second and a response time of 50 milliseconds. These speeds are considered the minimum required for activities such as video calls, streaming and social media browsing. Despite this relatively modest benchmark, networks often failed to achieve it during rail journeys.

Some routes performed considerably better than others. The line between London Victoria and East Croydon delivered the strongest results, particularly for EE customers, while O2 and Vodafone also performed well on that route. At the other end of the scale, the route between Basingstoke and Coventry, via Reading and Oxford, ranked among the weakest. Rural and intercity passengers were also found to experience poorer service than those travelling through cities and urban areas. Connectivity further deteriorated during peak commuting periods when more people were connected simultaneously.

© Ofcom

Train Wi-Fi proved to be an even bigger problem. Ofcom found that onboard Wi-Fi performed well only 1% of the time. Many train operators still rely on outdated technology that struggles to meet current passenger demands. In addition, some services limit internet speeds to manage network capacity, which can further affect the user experience. As a result, travellers often find themselves switching between weak mobile data and unreliable onboard Wi-Fi.

The reasons behind poor train connectivity are not limited to mobile operators alone. Mobile signals from masts are often weaker along railway corridors, especially in less populated areas. The design of trains can also affect performance. Metal carriage structures and specially coated windows can partially block mobile signals from reaching passengers inside. Older rolling stock can make the problem worse, while double-decker trains are also known to create additional signal challenges.

The findings highlight a challenge that is not unique to the UK. Maintaining stable internet connections on moving trains has long been difficult across Europe, particularly on routes that pass through rural areas. However, expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Travellers increasingly use their journey time to work, attend online meetings, access travel information and stay in contact with family and colleagues.

© Ofcom

Industry groups say improving connectivity requires both investment and regulatory support. Mobile UK, which represents the country’s major operators, said there are “unique structural and capacity challenges” to maintaining reliable service on trains. At the same time, telecom companies argue that improvements are already being made. “Nobody is investing more in the UK’s networks than BT,” a spokesperson for BT Group said, adding that the company expects to invest more than £40 billion this decade to strengthen connectivity across the country.

The UK government is now exploring new ways to address the issue. The Department for Transport plans to invest £57 million in improving connectivity through satellite technology on trains. The project would allow trains to connect to low-Earth-orbit satellites rather than relying solely on 4G and 5G networks. Meanwhile, Ofcom is calling for closer cooperation between telecom operators, local authorities, developers and government bodies. Natalie Black, Ofcom’s group director for infrastructure and connectivity, said: “We are determined to play our part and will work closely with industry, government, local authorities and others to break down barriers standing in the way of progress.” According to Black, such cooperation is needed to improve connectivity, support economic growth and ensure passengers receive the level of service they expect.

KLM Cityhopper has operated a passenger flight between Amsterdam and Hamburg using a 5% blend of synthetic kerosene (e-SAF). The flight marks the first passenger service to Germany using this type of fuel. It is part of ongoing efforts to test and scale alternative aviation fuels in real operating conditions. The operation shows how synthetic fuels are gradually being introduced into commercial aviation, even if only in small blends for now.

Synthetic kerosene, also known as e-SAF, is produced using renewable electricity, captured CO2, and water through a power-to-liquid process. This allows the fuel to be created without fossil oil, while still being compatible with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure. The fuel is designed to reduce lifecycle emissions by more than 90% compared to conventional kerosene. Because it can be used in today’s aircraft without technical modifications, it is seen as one of the more practical options for reducing aviation emissions in the short to medium term.

The 5% blend used on the Amsterdam–Hamburg route remains small, but it plays an important role in testing and demonstrating operational feasibility. These types of flights are not primarily about immediate emission reductions, but about proving that synthetic fuels can be integrated safely into commercial passenger operations. KLM already carried out a similar milestone in 2021, when it operated the first passenger flight using synthetic kerosene from Amsterdam to Madrid.

At the same time, the project highlights the gap between ambition and availability. While e-SAF is technically viable, production volumes remain extremely limited. Only small quantities are currently available, with 200 litres used in this latest operation compared to 500 litres in the 2021 test flight. This illustrates how slowly production capacity is developing, despite growing climate targets in the aviation sector and increasing regulatory pressure in Europe.

The development of synthetic aviation fuels is also closely linked to European climate rules. Through the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, the European Union is requiring airlines to gradually increase the use of sustainable aviation fuels in the coming years. This includes specific targets for both regular SAF and newer fuels like e-SAF. The goal is to reduce aviation emissions and push the market to scale up production. However, airlines and fuel producers say that meeting these targets will depend on how quickly production capacity can grow across Europe.

Cost remains one of the main barriers to wider adoption. E-SAF is currently around four times more expensive than conventional sustainable aviation fuel and roughly eight times more expensive than fossil kerosene. The production process requires large amounts of renewable electricity and complex industrial systems, which are still in early stages of scaling. In addition, permitting procedures and regulatory uncertainty in Europe continue to slow down investment in new production facilities.

Airports are becoming key actors in this transition. Hamburg Airport, which supported the operation, has indicated that its infrastructure is prepared to handle alternative aviation fuels. This includes systems for storage, blending, and distribution, which are essential for integrating new fuel types into daily operations. As more airlines begin testing and adopting SAF blends, airport readiness is becoming an important factor in determining how quickly these fuels can scale.

Speaking about the flight, KLM CEO Marjan Rintel said: “Today’s flight to Hamburg once again shows that flying on synthetic kerosene is technically possible, but the reality is that the availability of e-SAF lags far behind ambition.” She also stressed: “To truly make a difference, we must work together with governments, industry, and partners on scaling up and affordability in order to accelerate the sustainability of aviation.”

Looking ahead, synthetic aviation fuels such as e-SAF are expected to play an increasing role in efforts to reduce aviation emissions. However, scaling production remains the key challenge, particularly given high costs and limited supply. Alongside other solutions such as conventional SAF and future propulsion technologies, e-SAF is likely to form part of a broader mix of decarbonisation strategies. For now, the Amsterdam–Hamburg flight mainly demonstrates that the technology is already operational, while the industry continues to face the challenge of making it widely available.

Night trains are gaining more attention across Europe as more travellers look for ways to move between countries without flying. A recent survey of 11,000 people commissioned by rail manufacturer Hitachi Rail shows that almost half of respondents want to travel more by train and less by plane in the coming years. This interest is linked to sustainability concerns and the wish for more comfortable travel options across long distances. Night trains are seen as especially attractive because they allow passengers to cover long routes while sleeping and save time during the day.

At the same time, the actual availability of night trains does not always match this growing demand. A new 2026 interactive map created by Back-on-Track.eu shows how the network looks today across Europe. The map includes around 205 regular sleeper train connections and is designed as a clear overview of all existing routes. It also includes practical information and booking tips through an accompanying database. This makes it one of the most complete tools for understanding how night trains currently operate in Europe.

The 2026 edition of the map highlights some important changes compared to previous years. Five new connections have been added to the network. These include the European Sleeper service between Paris and Berlin and a planned Brussels to Milan connection. New routes operated by PKP also link Poland with Prague and Munich, adding more central European options. In the Nordic region, Helsinki to Kolari is also included among the updated services. These additions show that some parts of Europe are still expanding their night train offering.

However, the map also shows that not all changes are positive for passengers. Around ten lines have disappeared from the network, including several ÖBB Nightjet services. One of the most notable losses is the long Stockholm to Narvik connection, which was one of the longest night train routes in Europe at 1,456 kilometres. Other routes in countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia have also been removed or reduced. In some cases, services have been shortened, such as the Bratislava to Split route, which now starts in Vienna.

This mix of new routes and disappearing connections reflects a wider problem in European rail travel. Demand for night trains is clearly increasing, but the system is not always able to support it. At the same time, short-haul flights continue to grow in frequency, even as many travellers say they would prefer rail alternatives. This creates a gap between what passengers want and what transport systems are currently able to provide. Night trains often become the clearest example of this imbalance, where interest is high but services are limited.

One of the main reasons for these challenges is the lack of investment in rolling stock and rail infrastructure. According to Juri Maier from Back-on-Track, who helped design the map, this shortage is one of the biggest obstacles for expanding night trains in Europe. He explains that demand is present and that air travel is no longer as dominant on some routes. He also notes that modern sleeper train designs could carry up to 750 passengers, which would make many routes more economically viable. However, without significant investment, these ideas cannot be fully developed. Track maintenance works across Europe also create disruptions that make scheduling more difficult for long-distance overnight services.

Despite these challenges, there are expectations that night trains could become more connected in the future. Some infrastructure improvements are planned for the next decade, with potential benefits for cross-border rail travel by around 2032. One example is the planned Brussels to Milan route, which could fill an important gap in the current network. However, experts also point out that this route may face operational challenges, especially as it passes through Switzerland. Even so, there is interest in seeing how such services develop and whether they can be successfully introduced. The 2026 map, therefore, reflects a system in transition, where expansion and reduction happen at the same time across different parts of Europe.

From December 2027, new night train services to Brussels Airport will be introduced by SNCB/NMBS. The trains will operate from Bruges, Ghent and Brussels and will run seven days a week. They are scheduled to arrive at Brussels Airport as early as 3.30 am. The measure is included in Belgium’s new three-year transport plan and marks a significant change in overnight rail connectivity to the airport. It is designed to support passengers with very early departures and improve access during nighttime hours.

The main reason for the introduction of these services is the current gap in early-morning transport options. Today, the earliest trains from Bruges and Ghent arrive at the airport after 5.30 am on weekdays, which is too late for many flights. From Brussels, the first arrivals are around 4.30 am, while weekend services arrive even later. This creates a clear barrier for passengers taking early departures, especially for low-cost carriers and morning connections. Many travellers currently rely on cars, taxis or overnight stays near the airport, which increases both cost and travel stress.

The new night trains also strengthen the role of rail in the overall airport experience. The station at Brussels Airport is located directly under the departures and arrivals hall, allowing passengers to move straight from train to terminal. This reduces the need for shuttle transfers or additional local transport. It also reinforces the idea of the airport as a fully integrated rail hub, where rail and air travel connect seamlessly. With journey times such as 11 minutes from Brussels and around 55 minutes from Ghent, the airport already functions as one of the most accessible in the country during the day.

Beyond airport access, the night trains are part of a wider effort to expand national rail services. The transport plan approved by the government aims to increase overall train services by 3 percent over its duration. Earlier plans had set higher growth targets, but these were adjusted due to operational constraints and infrastructure limits. Despite this, a long-term objective remains to expand services by 10 percent between 2023 and 2032.

The plan will be introduced in three phases between 2026 and 2028. The second phase in December 2027 will bring the night trains to Brussels Airport into operation. The first phase, starting in December 2026, will add more trains on weekdays and weekends and introduce additional late evening services on Saturdays to and from Brussels. The final phase in December 2028 will bring further adjustments across the network. The programme also includes expansion of suburban S-train services around major cities such as Antwerp, Liège and Charleroi.

Another element of the plan is the gradual strengthening of local rail infrastructure. A new station, Braine Alliance station, is expected to open during the first phase of the rollout. These developments reflect a broader strategy to improve regional mobility and reduce dependence on road transport. For air passengers, the combination of night trains, improved city links and integrated airport access could gradually change how early morning travel is organised. It also highlights a shift toward making rail a more continuous 24-hour mobility option rather than a daytime-only service.

Tourism destinations across the world are already feeling the effects of climate change, with rising sea levels, shifting weather patterns and ecosystem disruption reshaping how places operate long before new global climate decisions are implemented. Destinations are experiencing changes in seasonality, environmental stability and infrastructure pressure that directly influence how tourism functions on the ground. These changes are no longer abstract projections, but visible realities affecting both natural environments and the visitor experience. As Oguzhan Bahadir Ari, President of Eurovia, notes, “impacts that were once discussed as a distant future, when climate change was still framed as something far ahead rather than already unfolding, are happening now.”

In very different regions, the signs of transformation are already clear. Christian Clauwers, visual storyteller, EU Climate Pact Ambassador and founder of the Society for Environmental Awareness (SEA), pointed to examples from across the world that illustrate how climate change is already affecting communities and destinations. In Lofoten, traditional fishing and drying practices that depend on stable cold air conditions are being disrupted by shifting temperatures and weather patterns. In the Arctic, melting ice and changing ecosystems are altering both wildlife behaviour and local ways of life. In the Pacific, island states such as Tuvalu are facing rising sea levels that threaten freshwater supplies and agricultural production, forcing in some cases the full import of drinking water.

These realities are increasingly shaping discussions around COP31, the next United Nations Climate Change Conference in Antalya. These issues were also explored during the high-level event “Road to COP31: A Shared Future from Brussels to Antalya” at the Press Club Brussels Europe, organised by the Society for Environmental Awareness (SEA) in collaboration with the Sustainable Future Platform and Travel Tomorrow, which brought together policymakers, scientists and industry representatives. The focus is shifting from long-term climate targets towards immediate adaptation and resilience, especially in regions already under pressure. Coastal tourism destinations across Europe illustrate this intersection clearly, as they depend heavily on stable seasons, water availability and predictable environmental conditions that are becoming less reliable. Rising flood risks and growing pressure on infrastructure and insurance systems highlight how climate impacts are moving from environmental concerns into economic and operational challenges for destinations.

A recurring issue in these discussions is the gap between scientific knowledge and political action. Climate science has been warning about these developments for decades, yet implementation often remains slow or fragmented. “The knowledge is there, the political will is missing, and until that changes, scientific evidence alone will not be enough to drive meaningful action,” highlighted Bart Rymen, Belgium’s IPCC focal point. This gap is further widened by misinformation and limited climate literacy, which continue to shape public understanding of climate risks. International coordination remains essential, as climate impacts do not respect national borders. Pressure is increasing not only from scientists, but also from younger generations who are demanding faster and more visible action.

Bart Rymen © Tony da Silva

Traditional media dynamics are also shaping how climate debates are framed. Hans Bruyninckx, Professor of Environmental Governance at the University of Antwerp and former Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, noted that journalists regularly ask him to participate in discussions with climate deniers, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change. “There is no point in that debate, the real discussion lies within the complexity of the climate challenge itself rather than in questioning its existence.” He also pointed to a lack of investigative climate journalism, a problem he linked to financial pressures on traditional media outlets. Instead of presenting climate science as a two-sided debate, he argued that journalism has an important role to play in helping the public understand the complexity and urgency of the issue.

While environmental warnings have been consistent for decades, it is often economic consequences that finally push climate change higher on the political agenda. Policymakers tend to respond more quickly when environmental risks begin to affect financial stability, public services or security. One of the clearest examples can be found in the insurance sector, where climate risks are increasingly reflected in both current claims and future projections. According to industry assessments, Belgium could see around 40% more flood-related insurance cases by 2040. In some regions around the world, obtaining insurance is already becoming more difficult, creating knock-on effects for housing, investment and access to loans. Environmental risks often become politically urgent only when they translate into economic consequences, even though the scientific evidence has been available for decades.

Alongside these risks, there is a growing focus on ecological resilience and circular economy models as part of long-term solutions. Ecological resilience refers to the ability of natural systems to absorb shocks and recover, while the circular economy focuses on reducing waste and keeping resources in use for longer. Instead of relying on linear systems of consumption and disposal, destinations are increasingly exploring ways to integrate nature-based solutions. “Wetlands and mangroves can act as living barriers, absorbing wave energy and softening the impact of floods
and coastal erosion before they reach human settlements,” explained Gudrun De Boeck, Head of the ECOSPHERE Research Group at the University of Antwerp.

Tourism itself is also evolving in response to these pressures. In Türkiye, examples such as Club Marvy illustrate how tourism can move towards more integrated and locally rooted models. Rather than focusing only on visitor volume, this approach connects guests with local food systems, markets and cultural practices. It encourages a form of travel that is more participatory, where tourism becomes part of local life instead of being separated from it.

Communication is another key part of this transition, especially as climate change can still feel distant or abstract to many travellers. Scientific data alone is often not enough to convey urgency or complexity in a way that resonates widely. This is where journalism and visual storytelling play an important role. The exhibition “The Fragile Frontlines of a Warming World”, curated by Ipek Tekdemir and featuring the work of Christian Clauwers, aims to make environmental change visible through photography from regions already under pressure.

COP31 is increasingly positioned as more than another milestone in a long series of international climate negotiations. While agreements such as the Paris Agreement established global ambition, the challenge today lies in turning commitments into practical action at a time when climate impacts are already visible across tourism destinations. “Good leaders lead from the back, stronger economies and institutions, like the EU should actively support countries that are less equipped to deal with the consequences of climate change,” Daniel Cervenka, Director of The Convergence and CEO of Resolve Global. As COP31 approaches, attention is shifting from what has been agreed on paper to what can actually be delivered on the ground, with destinations already adapting to climate pressures through infrastructure planning, resource management and new tourism models.

Booking.com has released the sixth edition of its European Accommodation Barometer, giving an overview of how accommodation providers across Europe view the current market and the year ahead. The report is based on responses from 1,240 executives and managers across 24 European markets in the hospitality sector. It shows an industry that continues to recover and adapt after several years of major disruption. Most businesses report a positive outlook, but the findings also show that not all parts of the sector are moving at the same pace. Differences between large hotel chains and independent properties are becoming more visible in both financial results and future expectations.

Overall sentiment in the European accommodation sector remains positive, with 66% of businesses expecting strong performance in the next tourism season. Around 60% say they are currently in a good financial position, which suggests a stable base for growth. Occupancy levels are also improving, with 50% of businesses reporting increases compared to the previous year. At the same time, 40% report higher average daily rates, which is slightly lower than in 2025 when 43% saw price increases. This shows that demand is still present, but price growth is becoming more moderate. The industry appears steady, but not evenly strong across all segments.

A key finding of the report is the widening gap between hotel chains and independent accommodation providers. Large chains consistently report stronger results across key indicators. Around 72% of hotel chains describe their financial situation as positive, compared to 55% of independent businesses. Performance differences also appear in room pricing and occupancy levels. About 47% of chains report higher room rates, while only 37% of independents see the same trend. In terms of occupancy, 56% of chains report growth compared to 46% of independent properties. These differences suggest that scale and resources are becoming more important in determining how well businesses perform in the current market.

The report also highlights cybersecurity as one of the most important challenges facing the sector. Overall, 66% of European accommodation providers feel prepared to deal with cyber threats. However, this confidence is much higher among larger businesses. Almost all companies with more than 250 employees, at 94%, say they are well prepared, compared to only 60% of small businesses with fewer than ten employees. Smaller properties are also less likely to invest in staff training, regular system audits, and external cybersecurity support. Only 49% of small businesses offer cybersecurity training, compared to 89% of larger companies. This gap suggests that smaller operators may face more difficulty in keeping up with growing digital risks, especially as cyberattacks become more advanced and targeted.

© Booking.com

Concerns about cyber threats are also reflected in expectations for the next tourism season. Around 21% of small businesses see cyberattacks as a major risk, compared to just 9% of larger companies. Payment fraud follows a similar pattern, with 25% of smaller businesses expressing concern compared to 16% of larger operators. While larger companies report more cybersecurity incidents overall, this likely reflects better monitoring systems and higher exposure due to scale. Smaller businesses, on the other hand, may experience fewer reported incidents but also have fewer tools to detect and respond to them.

Beyond digital risks, external disruptions are also shaping expectations for the coming year. Around 37% of accommodation providers are concerned about extreme weather events or natural disasters that could affect travel demand. In addition, 32% point to local disruptions such as transport strikes or infrastructure work that could limit access to destinations. These concerns show that external factors are becoming a regular part of business planning in tourism. Weather and transport issues are no longer seen as rare events but as ongoing risks that need to be managed throughout the year.

© Booking.com

Managing seasonality remains a key priority across the sector. Around 72% of businesses offer discounts or special packages during off-peak periods to attract more guests. Online platforms are widely seen as effective tools for generating demand, with 81% of providers relying on them during low occupancy periods. Marketing strategies also include social media, used by 54% of businesses, paid advertising at 50%, email campaigns at 41%, and traditional media at 34%.

This mix shows that accommodation providers are using multiple channels to reach potential guests, rather than relying on a single approach. Event-driven tourism is also becoming more important, with 50% of businesses reporting benefits from events and special occasions. Among those, 66% saw higher revenue per available room, while 60% reported increased bookings during slower periods.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is expected to become one of the biggest drivers of tourism growth in North America. Hosted across Canada, the United States and Mexico, the tournament is already influencing travel demand months before kickoff. “It is a unique opportunity for North America to accelerate tourism growth, strengthen connectivity and showcase the region to millions of travellers around the world,” said Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the WTTC. Travel demand, hotel bookings and air connectivity are all expected to benefit from the influx of visitors.

Canada is expected to emerge as the biggest beneficiary of the tournament in terms of tourism growth. The WTTC forecasts a 6.4% increase in tourism GDP for the country, ahead of Mexico and the United States. Business travel data also points to a sharp rise in demand, with bookings to Canadian World Cup destinations increasing significantly compared with last year. Toronto stands out as the country’s strongest performer, with combined hotel and flight spending linked to the tournament rising dramatically. At the same time, flight prices to Canada have fallen, making the destination more attractive for both leisure and corporate travellers.

Business travel is becoming one of the strongest forces behind the World Cup tourism boom. Data from business travel platform Navan shows that hotel and flight bookings to Canadian host cities have nearly tripled compared with the same period last year. “Companies are embracing the World Cup as the ultimate can’t miss event,” according to Dane Molter, Senior Vice President of Navan Group Travel Marketplace. Businesses are increasingly using the tournament as an opportunity to meet clients, host events, and strengthen commercial relationships. Travellers are also booking much earlier than usual, reflecting the intense competition for flights and accommodation during the tournament period.

Mexico is also entering the World Cup year with strong tourism momentum. According to WTTC figures, the country recorded the strongest tourism performance in North America in 2025. International arrivals increased by more than 6%, while visitor spending also rose, outperforming both Canada and the United States on several key indicators. Although Canada is expected to record the largest tourism growth during the tournament itself, Mexico enters the event from a position of strength. The World Cup is therefore likely to build on an already expanding tourism sector rather than reverse a slowdown.

The United States, despite hosting the largest number of matches, enters the tournament with a more complex tourism picture. Recent figures show the country welcomed more than four million fewer international visitors in 2025 than the year before. Several factors may help explain the softer performance, including weaker inbound demand and concerns among some travellers about entry procedures and travel conditions. As a result, the United States is expected to record tourism growth linked to the World Cup, but at a lower rate than its neighbours.

At the same time, demand linked directly to the tournament remains strong. Hotel and flight bookings to US host cities continue to rise, while average hotel prices have increased by around 30%. Destinations such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago remain major gateways for international visitors and business travellers. The San Francisco Bay Area and the New York-New Jersey region are among the most popular destinations for corporate travel during the tournament period.

Some uncertainty remains around international travel operations in the United States. Recent proposals concerning customs processing at certain airports have prompted discussion within the travel industry about how major gateways could manage the expected influx of visitors. Industry groups have argued that smooth border procedures and efficient airport operations will be essential to maximise the benefits of the tournament. Because many international routes rely on a small number of major hubs, even limited disruptions can have wider effects across the aviation network. Travel organisations have also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive visitor experience during one of the world’s most-watched sporting events.

Beyond leisure travel, the tournament is expected to generate substantial economic benefits across North America. The WTTC estimates that the travel and tourism sector will support nearly 31 million jobs across the region in 2026. Increased visitor spending is expected to benefit hotels, airlines, restaurants, attractions and local businesses. The event is also encouraging investment in tourism infrastructure, aviation capacity and digital services designed to improve the travel experience. These improvements could continue to benefit destinations long after the final match has been played.

Industry leaders see the World Cup as an opportunity to create a lasting legacy for tourism across North America. Greater connectivity between the three host nations, improved transport links and increased international visibility could help strengthen the region’s appeal for years to come. While Canada currently appears best positioned to capitalise on the tournament-driven surge in demand, all three host countries stand to benefit from one of the largest global sporting events ever staged. The World Cup may ultimately become as significant for the region’s tourism sector as it is for football itself.

United Airlines is expanding its use of artificial intelligence across both passenger communication and operational decision-making. The airline is moving beyond traditional customer service tools and placing AI at the centre of how it manages flight disruptions. This includes systems that explain delays, support internal decisions, and improve overall efficiency.

United Airlines is upgrading its “Every Flight Has a Story” programme to provide real-time explanations for flight delays. The system uses generative AI to turn operational flight data into clear messages for passengers. These updates are designed to be sent through text messages and other digital channels when disruptions occur. The goal is to make delay information easier to understand by using simple and direct language.

The programme first launched in 2018 and originally relied on a mix of human input and automated tools. In 2024, United introduced generative AI to help create more detailed explanations for passengers. At that stage, human “storytellers” still played a role in shaping the messages. The airline is now working toward a fully automated system that removes human involvement from the communication process.

CEO Scott Kirby said the goal is to build a system that automatically explains what is happening with each flight using operational data. These messages would be written in plain language and sent directly to passengers when delays occur. As he explained, “The goal I’ve set for the team is pretend I’m on the flight, and I’ve asked what’s going on with my flight. What would you tell me? I want to tell all of our customers that.” The system is designed to analyse data from across the airline and turn it into simple delay explanations. United says this could improve clarity, but removing human review also raises questions about oversight and accuracy.

Beyond passenger messaging, United already uses AI in operational tools such as ConnectionSaver. This system helps decide whether flights should wait for connecting passengers or depart on time. It uses real-time data on passenger movements, arrival times, and aircraft schedules. The aim is to reduce missed connections while still protecting the overall punctuality of the network.

The system has reportedly helped save nearly 54,000 connections in Denver alone, particularly at Denver International Airport. It supports staff by giving recommendations based on algorithmic analysis of multiple flight factors. This shows that AI is already playing a role in live operational decisions, not just customer communication. The next step for airlines is expanding this kind of automation into more areas of the passenger journey.

The wider aviation industry is also increasing its use of automation due to ongoing operational pressure. Post-pandemic travel recovery created staff shortages and higher demand across airports. At the same time, delays and baggage handling issues have become more visible to passengers. As a result, airlines are investing in systems that can process information faster and reduce manual workload.

AI is also being introduced in areas such as baggage handling and airport logistics. Automated tracking systems and sensor-based technologies are helping airlines monitor luggage throughout the journey. This reduces the need for manual sorting and lowers the risk of mishandled bags. A previous industry trend shows that automation is increasingly being applied from check-in to arrival, changing how airports operate behind the scenes.

These developments raise questions about trust and transparency in automated communication. Passengers may receive faster and more frequent updates, but they may not always understand how those explanations are generated. In aviation, accuracy is critical because small errors can create confusion during disruptions. This makes reliability an important challenge for systems that operate without human oversight.

There is also the issue of accountability when AI systems make decisions or generate explanations independently. If a message is incorrect, it is not always clear where responsibility lies within the airline. This becomes more important as AI takes on more visible roles in passenger communication. Airlines will need to balance automation with clear oversight to maintain confidence among travellers.

At the same time, AI is becoming a competitive tool for airlines trying to differentiate their services. United believes that faster and clearer communication will improve customer experience and strengthen loyalty. The airline industry is increasingly competing on digital experience as well as price and routes. This positions AI as both an operational upgrade and a branding strategy.

Across the sector, AI is gradually reshaping how passengers interact with airlines before, during, and after a flight. From delay notifications to rebooking support and baggage tracking, more parts of the journey are being automated. The pace of change is accelerating as airlines look for ways to improve efficiency and reduce disruption impacts. The coming years will determine how far automation can go while still maintaining passenger trust and transparency.
