On September 1, 2025, the Chinese Mission to the EU held a symposium to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. Ambassador Cai Run, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, delivered a speech at the symposium. The event brought together directors and experts from mainstream European media outlets and renowned think tanks, such as Euronews, Euractiv, and Friends of Europe. Also present at the event were Chinese diplomats, including Minister Zhu Jing from the Chinese Mission to the EU, and journalists from Chinese media outlets based in Europe.

Ambassador Cai Run emphasized that the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was an important part of the World Anti-Fascist War. He noted that it was Chinese people’s the longest, largest national liberation struggle against foreign invasion that paid the heaviest price in modern times, and opened up the main Eastern battlefield of the World Anti-Fascist War. The Chinese people made immense sacrifices for the eventual victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. During the war, China and Europe stood together in solidarity, forging a deep bond of friendship that remains an indelible part of their collective memory. As two major forces, two big markets, and two great civilizations, China and Europe should work together to uphold a correct view of the Second World War, safeguard post-war international order, and inject greater stability and certainty to a world fraught with turbulence.

Guests in attendance had in-depth discussions on “The Contribution of China and Europe to the Victory of the World Anti-Fascist War” and “Joint Efforts by China and Europe to Uphold the Post-War International Order.” They said the symposium helped them deepen understanding of China’s crucial contribution to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. They agreed that China and Europe should join hands to uphold multilateralism, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and promote global peace and development.

Prior to the main event, guests visited a photo exhibition and watched a documentary commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Go back in time with your family and discover life in 1815! The historic weekend of the Battle of Waterloo is an unmissable event in Belgium’s Walloon Brabant. It takes place every year in June. This year, I went there for the first time with my 6-year-old son, Jules.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, on 18 June 1815, two days after the battles of Ligny and Quatre-Bras, Napoleon faced the allied army on the plateau of Mont-Saint-Jean. The Duke of Wellington, commander-in-chief of the allied forces, decided to deploy his army there. The British army at the time was undoubtedly the best defence in the world, facing the most effective army in offence.

I have always loved stories related to our past, no matter how difficult they may be. And the Battle of Waterloo is one of them. This year, my son was old enough to understand the events linked to this battle and the importance of this commemoration. A day filled with encounters and emotions of all kinds, which must have sparked a lot of reflection.

Our immersive day began with our arrival at the bottom of the Lion’s Mound. A great surprise for Jules who had never seen the monument from up close! Then, with great confidence, we started a little morning walk through the fields, to get to where the reenactment would take place: the Hougoumont Farm.

© Destination Brabant Wallon

For a little pre-show entertainment, after we had just sat down in the audience to admire the show, a group of reenactors invited themselves next to Jules to play a game of dice with him and gave him a little souvenir… What a joy!

One hour of performance followed, accompanied by some much needed commentary to understand what was happening in front of us. From the very beginning, our breath was taken away by the cannon shots that exploded before our eyes. Then rifle shots echoed throughout the plain, while the cavalry charges were impressive.

A victory for some, a defeat for others, but, above all, an incredible thank you to all these reenactors who proudly take on their role and are committed to being the guardians of the duty of remembrance.

© Destination Brabant Wallon

The Hougoumont Farm was a strategic location for the battle in 1815. Now, during the historic weekend, the camp site set up there offers the opportunity for adults and children to understand the lives of soldiers at the time. The reenactors live there exactly as soldiers did in 1815, without much comfort! They sleep in simple fabric tents where their mattresses, made of straw, are placed on the ground. You can see their bags, their gear, but also all their equipment for living and cooking. By putting yourself in their shoes, you can imagine how heavy and cumbersome all this must have been to transport…

© Destination Brabant Wallon

Within the farm, next to the camp site, the “civil village” is also organized. There were demonstrations of several trades of the time, such as the weaving loom or the work of the peasants in the fields. For children, there were workshops, such as making bread or playing old wooden games. A great way to get an idea of the way of life at the time.

For us, what appealed to Jules the most were all the explanations of the infirmary in 1815! Many strange tools were on display and the practices at the time were very cruel! Certainly, the little boo-boo he had got at school on Monday suddenly seemed much less serious…

When we arrived in the courtyard of the Caillou Farm, the meal of Emperor Napoleon and his General Staff was taking place in the background. But Jules was immediately attracted by the group of children in front of us who were simply having fun with giant soap bubbles! A different welcome from that time but which undoubtedly delighted the young ones! It was as if touches of gentleness were added to the sombre atmosphere of the battle.

If I must tell you just one special thing to do with the kids during the historic weekend, I highly recommend the “Little Soldier School” at Napoleon’s Last Headquarters. In one hour, Jules learned the basics of the soldiers’ vintage outfits and was able to shoot with a wooden rifle (much larger than him) using flour and foam cartridges. This activity, which is led by a reenactor, is as educational as it is fun, a pure moment of joy shared by adults and children!

© Destination Brabant Wallon

While wandering around the French camp site, we were able to caress the horses which had courageously participated in the reenactment. But the cherry on top was that, before leaving, we had the chance to meet Napoleon in person! Jules jokingly told Napoleon that “it was a shame that he lost” and to this, Napoleon, very optimistic, simply replied: “you are right, good man, we will try again next year!” We will certainly go back next year. Who knows… maybe we’ll have a different ending to the story?

The Waterloo 1815 battlefield stretches for almost 10km and is made up of, as you may know, several attractions to visit year-round. To begin with, the museum of Napoleon’s Last Headquarters retraces the few hours before the battle and displays an array of civil and military items of the time. The museum, thanks to its beautiful scenography, is undoubtedly suitable for families and especially children who, throughout the tour, have the opportunity to learn while having fun.

The Domaine de la Bataille de Waterloo 1815 is made up of 4 attractions:

the Memorial Museum (located below the battlefield). The visit will take you through the entire history of the battle through uniforms, historical objects, immersive exhibitions and even a 3D film!

the incredible panorama, where you will find a 110m long painted canvas depicting combat scenes

the famous Lion’s Mound with its 226 steps (as Jules would say, is that a lot?!) which promises you an impressive view if you dare climb to the top!

and finally, the Hougoumont Farm, which, in addition to its 2 new museum rooms, offers innovative scenography!

Finally, the Wellington Museum (Duke Wellington’s Headquarters), located in the centre of the city of Waterloo, invites you to discover a whole series of military objects used during the battle.

If you want to discover the life of soldiers but not during the reenactment, many themed events are organized throughout the year at the foot of the Lion’s Mound or at Napoleon’s Last Headquarters. Discover life in the camp sites, cannon shots, horse-drawn carriage rides, pyjama parties at the museum and many other activities to create memories with your family!

I will undoubtably return with my family to visit each place of the battlefield, to immerse myself a little more in this History, with a capital H, while waiting to take part in the great reenactment of 2025, which will mark the 210th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo!

Geuze’s secret? It’s in the Pajottenland and Zenne River Valley air. Wild yeast swirls invisibly through it, seeping into the lambic brewers’ open vats at night. It was the same in Bruegel’s day when he would visit the same gorgeous rolling landscape of farm horses and water mills for inspiration. And there’s no time like October – Lambic Month – to visit on foot and discover the craft of brewing. The whole region is abuzz with things to see and do. So, why not stick around for an overnight stay? Keep reading for five choice walking tips.

1. The Alambic Walk

1.1. The Walk – 7.1 km

Head out from the heart of Lembeek on this 7.1-km journey to the Malakoff Estate. The tower ruins look authentically medieval, but nothing could be further from the truth. Is Lembeek a bastardisation of the old ‘alambic’, a distilling device? No one knows for sure.

Get off at Halle station. You’ll find yourself on the winding Zenne Trail in no time, headed towards the trees of Buizingen’s Kluis Forest [Kluisbos]. Eventually, you’ll wind up back in town on your way to the famous St Martin’s Basilica. Curious to know what a lambiekstoemper is? Aside from being a lambic fan club, it originally refers to the tool people would use to crush a sugar cube into a cold glass of sour lambic or geuze.

The ‘green’ in Green Belt? You can take that literally cycling the lush loop encircling Brussels. This 126-km bike route is a grab bag of enticing vistas, sweeping landscapes, verdant valleys, elegant castle estates, rich agricultural land, rolling hills, and majestic forests. You might sweat a bucket or two on those inclines, but the effort is more than worth it with picturesque Bruegelian landscapes and exciting views of the Brussels metropolis. Plus, craft breweries and cosy beer pubs are another staple of this route. You’ve got three days. Don’t forget to treat yourself to the region’s refreshing geuzes and krieks.

© Visit Flanders

1. Day 1: Grimbergen to Lennik (38 km)

Grimbergen Abbey Basilica towers above the Grimbergen city centre, a monument to the past. Just follow the tower to discover Grimbergen Abbey, where the Norbertine monks have rekindled the time-honoured craft of beer brewing. Need something to look forward to? Abbey restaurant and brasserie – the Fenikshof – is the perfect finish to this three-day bike trip! Want a teaser? Visit the new experience centre and stroll through the rich history of Grimbergen’s abbey beer.

© David Samyn

Hop back on your bike to cycle the 15 minutes to Meise Botanic Garden. At 92 hectares brimming with 18,000 different plant species, it’s easily the largest botanical garden in the world. Take your time to mosey from one climate zone to another in the Plant Palace. This is your chance to discover plants from the desert, savannah, rainforest, and other unique habitats from around the world.

Past Meise’s luxury neighbourhoods, the landscape morphs into something new. Sail past the wide-open rolling fields and charming groves. Girardin Brewery’s copper brew kettles in Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle herald your entry into geuze and Bruegel country, aka the Pajottenland. With his easel tucked under his arm, Pieter Bruegel set out to roam the countryside in the 16th century, immortalising churches, villages, and water mills along the way. Glance around you, and you’ll see that little has changed since his day.

Tasty tips: For the bulk of this stage, you’ll be pedalling through the Pajottenland and the Zenne River Valley – renowned for its unique lambic and geuze beers. Wild yeast drifts and swirls through the air of this spacious, rolling landscape populated by Belgian draught horses and water mills – a countryside caught in time. Those yeasts produce the singular flavour of spontaneously fermented beer. So, be sure to pop by one of the breweries along the way for a taste!

Today’s bike-friendly accommodation: B&B St.Hubert in Lennik.

Brewery 3 fonteinen in Beersel © Visit Flanders

2. Day 2: Lennik to Overijse (50 km)

Today might just be the most beautiful stage of your journey, but it’s also quite a workout. Grease up your calves to make it up the tough inclines to come. Your day starts with a famed landmark, Gaasbeek Castle. Dream castle and romantic getaway – this was where Marquise Arconati Visconti welcomed politicians, writers, and scientists for long, lively and sometimes heated discussions. The staunch medieval exterior belies a whimsical, enchanting neo-Renaissance interior.

© Visit Flanders

But be sure to make a pit stop at St Martin’s Basilica in Halle for a glimpse of this centuries-old pilgrimage town’s miraculous Our Black Lady of Halle statue. Next, it’s time for a lunch break in Beersel. What do you think? Does the lambik-O-droom overlooking 3 Fonteinen Brewery’s vat room sound good to you? Or why not drop by the Oud Beersel Geuze blendery’s alehouse? Don’t let FOMO get you down. Your choice is the right one.

Fortified by a tasty pint of lambic, you’re ready to cycle through the ancient, majestic beech lanes of the Sonian Forest towards Hoeilaart, Jezus-Eik, and Tervuren.

Tasty tips: After the Sonian Forest, say hello to the grape region. Hoeilaart has also been dubbed ‘The Glass Village’ due to the municipality’s prolific glasshouse vineyards. Overijse is also the location of the Dru!f Visitor Centre, where you can learn all about the origins and history of the Brabant table grape. Hop off your bike for a tick to visit one of the glasshouse growers and taste their scrumptious grapes.

Reserve a room and bike storage at Joly Tiny House in Overijse.

3. Day 3: Overijse to Grimbergen (43 km)

The Sonian Forest segues seamlessly into another gorgeous oasis of tranquillity: Tervuren Warande Park, once the hunting grounds of the Dukes of Brabant. These days, it’s an elegant park for a stroll with a neoclassical French garden, ponds, and incredible beeches and oaks up to 200 years old. It’s bordered by the regal and recently remodelled AfricaMuseum. Did you know this museum is celebrating its 125th anniversary? It opened at Tervuren’s Colonial Palace in 1898, but the impressive collection soon outgrew its venue. A range of special activities and experiences are in the works for the anniversary celebrations.

But a few miles down the road, in Steenokkerzeel, you get a different adrenaline rush. There, the planes zoom so low you could almost reach out and touch them. Platforms along the flight paths are always occupied by a handful of eager spotters, anxiously awaiting their chance to snap a shot of that one special aircraft.

The last miles of your journey usher you through Melsbroek’s Floordam Forest along the Zenne and Vilvoorde’s Verbrande bridge. That’s when you’ll see Grimbergen Abbey Basilica reappear on the horizon. Get ready for a slightly bumpy ride as you cycle the long cobbled path to the Tommenmolen. This hoary old mill is part of the MOT, the Museum of Old Techniques. The terrace beckons, but try and stick it out a little longer. The Fenikshof and Norbertine microbrewery await.

Tasty tips: North-east of Brussels, you’ll find the home of Belgium’s ‘white gold’. It’s where farmers grow the country’s quintessential local produce, i.e. asparagus and Belgian endive. Turn back the clock three-quarters of a century, and you’d find Belgian endive around every corner of these communities. Belgian endive was grown on every street; no back garden was complete without an endive shed. These days, Belgian endive is less prominent on the horizon, but it remains a star versatile culinary product. Don’t miss out: get a taste of that heavenly White Gold along the way!

Charleroi has not always been perceived positively but more recently, it has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance. Boasting a rich industrial past, it is now a trendy urban destination.

On the one hand, there is the heritage of heavy industry, the cradle of the Black Country with its chimneys and factories juxtaposed with workers’ houses and slag heaps in a joyous anarchy.

On the other hand, there are comic strips and the culture that comes with it, bright and bold street art featuring international graffiti artists and alternative underground culture. Add to this creative mix an amazing Photography Museum and the Bois du Cazier (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and you have a potent mix of fascinating things to see and do. Major urban renovation works as well as rich cultural life has given the city a new lease of life and colour, attracting visitors from all over the world.

1. Boucle noire

A further 22 km circuit at the GR412, for the most demanding hikers. Extending as far as Charleroi railway station, the circuit passes by particularly attractive places, such as the Marchienne and Monceau castles, the Martinet site and slag heaps and the Dampremy-La Docherie chain of slag heaps. The tour includes climbing the four slag heaps connected to each other by passages, paths and short crossings over secondary roads.

Scherpenheuvel-Zichem is to the northeast of the province of Flemish Brabant, about 50 km from the heart of Brussels. And for centuries, it’s been Belgium’s most popular pilgrimage site. But it’s especially in May that pilgrims from all over the globe flock to this little town to light candles and pray. Have you been yet?

1. Belgium’s most famous basilica

Anyone visiting Scherpenheuvel-Zichem can spot it from miles away – the Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel. Its gigantic dome is crowned with a lustrous scattering of 298 gilt stars. Not only is Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel Belgium’s most famous basilica, it’s also its oldest domed church, dating back to 1627.

© Visit Scherpenheuvel-Zichem

The basilica and square are designed as a heptagram, symbolic of Mary’s seven sorrows and seven joys. And from mid-March through mid-November, the basilica is ringed by cheerful stalls selling statues, icons, art, candles, knick-knacks, and candy. You might also hear a melody or two from the carillon if you’re lucky.

Another sacred, historic site in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem is Averbode Abbey. Norbertine monks have called this area home for over 900 years. Visitors are welcome to explore the courtyard and part of the abbey church all week long. For the curious among us looking for a sneak peek behind closed abbey walls, there’s a guided tour every Sunday at 3 pm. To experience and enjoy Averbode’s unique products, e.g. craft beer, artisanal cheese, and abbey bread, drop by the experience centre and café – Het Moment.

3. Ice cream and a stroll

Tucked behind Averbode Abbey, you’ll find a beautiful forest and richly textured, colourful heathland. You’ll come across this nature reserve’s very best spots on the Norbertine Walk (9.3 km). What’s more, your walk involves a stroll down Ice Cream Lane [de Lekdreef]: a car-free street lined with ice cream carts during the summer. Plunk down on one of the lane’s benches and enjoy an ice cream in nature’s good company. (It’s also a great spot for people-watching!)

4. Ernest Claes’ stomping grounds

One of Belgium’s most famous authors is Ernest Claes. Claes was born in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem in 1885, and you can still explore where he spent his early years today. To visit his home learn more here. It’s your chance to discover more about his life and what life was like in rural Belgium at the end of the 19th century. The Demerbroeken Nature Reserve, just behind his home, was a persistent source of inspiration for his novels. It’s hardly a surprise then that so many wonderful walks and bike rides start from the museum. Plan to encounter marshes, meadows, and bird-watching huts on your walk or ride.

Up for a challenge? Meet the Dwars door het Hageland Gravel Route! This bike ride is 75 km long and involves some heavy endurance climbs (500 altimeters). Cycle the mud runs of the Demerbroeken and plunge through the woods of Averbode on this route. Plus, there are the obligatory sights, e.g. the medieval Maagdentoren in Zichem, the Citadel of Diest, and the Vlooyberg Tower. Boredom? That’s not the word you’re looking for.

6. Medieval watchtower

Back in the day (the Middle Ages), Zichem found itself at the crossroads of the Duchy of Brabant and the County of Loon. And that made its safeguarding priority number one. Consequently, one Reinier II van Schoonvorst commissioned the construction of a watchtower, the Maagdentoren. This colossal stone and brickwork structure appeared on the banks of the Demer River in the 14th century. A few years ago, the tower was beautifully restored. Now you can climb all the way to the top for a stunning vista of the Demer River Valley. With a clear sky, you can even see up to 30 kilometres out.

With its landscaped gardens, access to the Sonian Forest and a top-class museum, there’s another world to discover just outside Brussels.

With a trip to Tervuren, just to the east of Brussels, getting there is all part of the fun. Board the 44 tram at Montgomery on the edge of the European quarter, and after a picturesque 20-minute ride you’re in a different world. As you leave behind the capital’s pretty suburbs, the tram plunges into the forest, emerging on the outskirts of Tervuren, where culture, nature and history await.

A short walk from the tram stop, the town’s park is a beautiful mix of landscaped French-style gardens, mighty trees and still waters. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife here, too. And while it’s a popular destination for walkers, joggers, families and picnickers, you’ll always find a spot of your own to enjoy the fresh air in peace and quiet.

A fresh look at the past

At the heart of the park is the handsome Africa Museum. Originating as a temporary exhibit at the Brussels International Exposition in 1897, the museum’s creation was largely financed by King Leopold II with the enormous profits he made from ivory and rubber in the then Congo Free State. A five-year renovation completed in 2018 marked the start of a new chapter, whose biggest challenge is the continuing decolonisation of the museum.

Through dialogue and collaboration with experts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, the museum aims to tell a more nuanced story of the region’s history, identity, art, culture, peoples, biodiversity, languages and contemporary economy, while attempting to cast a more critical eye on Belgium’s frequently brutal activities in its former colony.

The original palatial buildings have been complemented by a glass annex housing the ticket counter, gift shop and restaurant. Kids will enjoy the wildlife galleries and the family parcours, and many of the exhibits are interactive. Count on spending two hours here, and consider a guided tour to ensure you don’t miss a thing.

Spectacular natural heritage

Tervuren’s 120-hectare arboretum has a rich and varied collection of more than 700 species of tree, from all around the world – alongside familiar beech and fir, look out for varieties like the sequoia, Aleppo oak and Mongolian lime. A tangle of grassy valleys and wide, flat avenues, it makes for a beautiful, peaceful walk, while providing vital research material for conservationists.

Both the park and arboretum are part of the vast Sonian Forest, the huge stretch of green that wraps round the south and east of the capital. Its magnificent beech trees have been recognised by Unesco and are Belgium’s first natural World Heritage Site.

© Lander Loeckx

The forest’s trails offer countless possibilities for hikes both long and short, always with something new to see. You can create your own route via the app, or try out one of the tourist office’s suggested routes: the royal walk begins and ends at the entrance to the Tervuren arboretum, while the Groenendaal walk takes you through the smaller Groenendaal arboretum, home to some 400 indigenous and exotic tree species, as well as a forest reserve and the Royal Lodge on a former hippodrome.

Hungry? Benches throughout the forest and park offer plenty of picturesque spots for a picnic, but there are also options for a more gourmet lunch, dinner or pitstop. A former mill, the red-brick Spaans Huis dates back to the 13th century; today it’s a social restaurant, shop and information point, supplying snacks, drinks, regional products and tips on exploring the forest. Canape-Apero serves up attractive small plates and cocktails at weekends, with brunch on Sundays, and inside the Africa Museum, Bistro Tembo has a menu of African-inspired dishes like bobotie. Tervuren has a pleasant city centre. Many appealing cafés and restaurants await your visit.

Getting there: tram 44

Tervuren is the final stop of tram 44 from Montgomery in Brussels, which operates every 15 to 20 minutes at weekends. Trains run twice an hour from Brussels to Groenendaal for the Sonian Forest, and there is parking at Vlaktedreef for the Arboretum.

With temperatures rising and the flowers parading their bright petals – there’s no better time for a short trip into the Brussels countryside. The capital’s Green Belt is renowned for its beautiful parks, gardens, and castles; surprisingly, many of them remain undiscovered. That’s a pity since so many are easy to get to and offer the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Let’s take a look at some highlights and hidden gems worth exploring this spring.

April is when all kinds of spring blossoms flourish. And on the Groot-Bijgaarden Castle grounds, that’s serious business. Over a million bulbs are planted by hand, including the nearly 400 varieties of tulips on display during the April Floralia Flower Show. The abundance of pink, white, purple, and blue hyacinths and sunny daffodils help turn this nature exhibition into a vibrant tapestry of colour. The festival’s backdrop – a stately 17th century moated castle – adds to the charm. The sense of enchantment is also enhanced by the 14th century donjon towering over the colourful flora. The grounds are only open to the public during Floralia. So, be sure to buy your ticket to this floral extravaganza.

© Kasteel van Groot-Bijgaarden

And… while you’re in the neighbourhood, why not make it a day trip? Just next door – in the village of Sint-Anna-Pede – you can discover the works of famous Belgian painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the very landscape that inspired him. Find out why it was such a powerful muse on a walk, bike ride, or even by wagon! When you stop to catch your breath, try a refreshing geuze. It’s the region’s pride and joy, and the local Timmermans Brewery has been faithfully producing it for over 300 years!

Meise Botanic Garden is your stop for a sophisticated mix of floral splendour, rich culture, and history. Bouchout Castle, at the heart of this 92-hectare domain, dates back to the 12th century. However, around the French Revolution, it was thoroughly renovated. That’s when the lavish garden was embellished with additional ponds and a rich variety of exotic plants. The last resident of the castle was Princess Charlotte, King Leopold II’s youngest sibling. Bouchout still bears traces of her harrowing history as the Empress of Mexico and her years as a grieving widow.

Meise Botanic Garden © Lander Loeckx

Naturally, the castle isn’t the site’s main attraction. The garden and its Plant Palace are one of the largest of their kind in the world. While the park is worth a trip all year round, spring and summer are exceptionally breathtaking, with the outdoor flowers in bloom. To explore the exotic – i.e. plants that fail to thrive in Belgium’s climate – you can peruse the large vegetation zones in the greenhouse complex. Strolling from the desert into the rainforest and out into the savannah … losing your way isn’t hard to imagine here. Whatever you do, don’t forget to check out the giant waterlilies. Did you know that they’re actually strong enough to carry a baby? An hour is barely enough to immerse yourself in the different climates. Still, if your time is limited, definitely reserve another hour to explore the rest of the park. The culinary, medieval, and rose gardens and the flower theatre await!

Meise Botanic Garden © Lander Loeckx

Fortunately, Meise Botanic Garden is easy to reach by bus (250 and 251 from Brussels North) and car (Exit 3 off the A12), and there’s parking around the domain. Even better, its surrounded by walking and cycling nodes, making it the perfect start or finish to a countryside walk or ride. For a combination of town life, history, and culture, you could easily combine your Meise Botanic Garden visit with a trip to picturesque Grimbergen and Vilvoorde. This handy itinerary will help you on your way.

Can’t get enough? Flemish Brabant is teeming with options to combine spring’s natural bliss, castles, or a leisurely park stroll. Park Ter Rijst (Pepingen) is always fantastic for a peaceful walk through the lush, quiet countryside.

Gaasbeek Castle © Lander Loeckx

And Tervuren Park is the ideal setting for your first picnic of the year. Gaasbeek Castle’s European-Grant-Award winning Museum Garden opens its doors to visitors again in May. And in the summer? Drop by the Coloma Castle Rose Garden Festival (13-27 June) in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. ICI Paris XL has got nothing on the heady fragrance of its near-endless varieties of roses.
