Airbus has been working on a hydrogen-powered plane, likely a 100-seat turboprop, for several years, its hydrogen project, called ZEROe, having received public funding and wide industry-support throughout its stages. Initially using an A380 as a testbed for direct combustion engines fuelled by hydrogen, the company announced in May 2024 the development of a new demonstrator, Cryoprop, to accelerate the maturation of superconducting technologies for use in electric propulsion systems of a future hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Despite progress going seemingly well, the European airspace giant has now announced it is postponing its ambitious plans to develop a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft, originally set for a mid-2030s launch, citing slower-than-expected technological advancements as the primary reason for the delay.

“Hydrogen has the potential to be a transformative energy source for aviation,” Airbus said in a statement. “However, we recognize that developing a hydrogen ecosystem—including infrastructure, production, distribution and regulatory frameworks—is a huge challenge requiring global collaboration and investment.”

The company has not provided a revised timeline for the project, however the Force Ouvriere union disclosed that Airbus staff had been informed of a potential five to ten-year delay due to the technology lagging behind the pace necessary to meet the original 2035 target. This means that the development of a hydrogen-powered aircraft could be pushed into the 2040s.

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has consistently championed hydrogen as a crucial element in the long-term decarbonisation of aviation. His stance contrasts with that of rival Boeing, which has taken a more cautious approach, citing concerns over safety and technical readiness.

Moreover, despite hydrogen’s potential, some environmental groups argue that its production remains energy-intensive and not entirely carbon-free. They stress that a shift to hydrogen must be accompanied by significant advancements in renewable energy to make it a truly sustainable solution.

The decision to put the hydrogen initiative, known as ZEROe, on hold comes shortly after Airbus Helicopters scrapped its plans for the CityAirbus NextGen – an electric take-ff and landing vehicle (eVTOL), sometimes also called an air taxi – less than one year after unveiling it, due to uncertainties surrounding battery technology.

1. Environmental impact higher than planned

While the Indonesian government has promoted the project in the past as part of its strategy to develop tourism destinations beyond Bali, pressures from conservation groups, arguing that the government prioritises economic gains over ecological preservation, have prompted authorities to better investigate the actual impact of the project.

The Indonesian Environment Ministry has found severe mismanagement of rainwater runoff, which has led to sedimentation in the Lido Lake, a crucial water body in the region. Originally spanning 24 hectares, the lake has reportedly shrunk to just 12 hectares due to accumulated sediment. Officials emphasized that the discrepancy between environmental impact plans and actual implementation poses a significant threat to the region’s natural resources.

“The mismatch between environmental plans and physical implementation is a serious concern in efforts to preserve natural resources,” said Ardyanto Nugroho, Director of Environmental Complaints, Monitoring, and Law Enforcement at the ministry. He added that authorities are awaiting further laboratory test results before determining legal actions against the developers.

Local media reports confirmed the placement of an official “supervision” sign at Lido Lake. “We committed to preserving the environment and will take firm action against violations that impact the ecosystem and surrounding communities,” Nugroho said.

2. Threat to biodiversity

Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, home to one of Java’s last remaining virgin tropical forests, is a biodiversity hotspot, which can be severely affected by the project. The area boasts more than 2,000 species of flora and 250 species of birds. Critically endangered species, such as the Javan slow loris—the world’s only venomous primate—Javan leaf monkey and Javan leopard, rely on this habitat for survival. The Javan hawk-eagle and Javan silvery gibbon, numbering fewer than 4,000 in the wild, are also at risk due to encroaching development.

Environmental advocates welcomed the government’s decision, interpreting it as a sign that authorities are taking the project’s ecological impact seriously. “The Lido area is one of the most important watersheds of the Cimandiri River and plays a vital role in the landscape of Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park,” said Meizani Irmadhiany, Executive Chair of Konservasi Indonesia. “It is time for the business sector to prioritise environmental principles that have long-term impacts on ecosystems, communities and even businesses themselves.”

3. Other developments also to blame?

However, Tanoesoedibjo’s firm, PT MNC Land, has denied sole responsibility for the environmental degradation. Budi Rustanto, President Director of MNC Land, argued that other nearby developments, including government offices and residential buildings, have also contributed to Lido Lake’s sedimentation.

“Since 2013, we have actively sought solutions to address the lake’s decreasing depth, given that 50% of the lake is within our development area,” Rustanto told Indonesian news outlet Kompas, adding that MNC Land has adhered to Indonesia’s environmental impact assessment regulations (AMDAL).

It remains to be seen whether or not further investigations will unveil other discrepancies between the submitted plans and actual impact on the environment. If they do, it is likely that the developers will be given a chance to put forward rectifying measures before the project is completely shut down.

Until aircraft movement is officially restricted at the airport, helicopter traffic has already been restricted in the area over the Potomac River around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and stretching to Wilson Bridge. “Today’s decision will immediately help secure the airspace near Reagan Airport, ensuring the safety of airplane and helicopter traffic,” US Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, said on 31 January.

The restriction exempts helicopters entering this airspace for lifesaving medical support, active law enforcement, active air defence or presidential transport helicopter missions that must operate in the restricted area. Any helicopter operations outside the exemptions will be prohibited.

“This is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding our nation’s skies and upholding the highest standards of air travel safety. We will continue to support President Trump’s directive to achieve uncompromised aviation safety. The American people deserve full confidence in our aviation system and today’s action is a significant step towards restoring that trust,” Duffy added.

The helicopter restrictions will remain in place until the NTSB completes its preliminary investigation of the air carrier incident at which point it will be reviewed based on NTSB’s report.

What makes people uneasy is the uncertainty of how the situation will evolve. People are concerned that the so-called “earthquake swarm” is leading up to a more powerful tremor, or, more worryingly, to a volcanic eruption. Scientists do not see any sign that the seismic activity is slowing down, neither can they tell weather something bigger is bound to happen.

Despite Mitsotakis trying to keep optimistic, telling a press conference that “no one can make predictions, but we are more optimistic today than we were yesterday,” seismologists are more cautions in their approach. While only about 5% of earthquakes are foreshocks to larger tremors, there is still an anxiety that there could be an acceleration to a much larger earthquake,” warned David Pyle, a volcanologist at the University of Oxford.

“We are not yet in a position to say that we are seeing any evidence that would lead to the sequence slowly coming to a conclusion,” said Vassilis K Karastathis, a seismologist and director of research at National Observatory of Athens. “We are still in the middle of the road, we haven’t seen any easing, any sign that it’s heading towards a regression.”

Concerning an impeding volcanic eruption, signs seem to be more promising. “Right now, the earthquake activity is focusing to the northeast. It’s not clustering underneath any of the volcanoes that we know,” explained Jonas Preine, a geophysicist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, warning however that the risk of the earthquakes moving towards the undersea volcanic chain and triggering eruptions still exists.

Moreover, Costas Synolakis, an expert of natural disasters, has said that while a big explosion of Santorini’s own volcano is unlikely, given it only takes place every 17,000 years, “we believe the volcano has small explosions on average every 50 years”. The quarterly report provides valuable insights into long-haul travel sentiments and the first edition of 2025 shows that long-haul travel sentiment globally and to Europe has weakened for this year. The barometer reveals cautious travel intentions, driven by affordability concerns and changing preferences, but also highlights opportunities to enhance Europe’s global competitiveness by better managing its tourism assets.

The report shows that 63% of respondents across key overseas markets – Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea and the United States – intend to travel long-haul this year. Among them, 44% plan to visit Europe, highlighting the continent’s strong position despite current challenges. However, this is a decline from 49% in 2024, with weakening sentiment reported in markets such as South Korea, the US, Brazil and Australia. In contrast, Chinese travellers demonstrate growing interest, with 61% intending to visit Europe in the next twelve months.

Affordability remains the most significant barrier to international travel, cited by 46% of respondents not planning a European trip. In addition to affordability, travellers cited interest in visiting other overseas regions or limited vacation time as factors influencing their plans.

While cost is a deterrent for planning a trip, once on holiday, travellers are shown to actually spend more. In the first four months of 2025, 42% of respondents plan to allocate between €100 and €200 per day, showing a 14% increase compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, the percentage of travellers planning to spend over €200 per day has decreased to 30%, reflecting a 13% decline.

Food and drinks are emerging as the top spending category for most travellers (67%). However, market priorities vary: for Chinese travellers, shopping leads their budget (67%), while for US travellers, accommodation ranks second (55%), significantly higher than in other markets (24%).

For those deciding to still plan a trip despite its cost, safety remains the most important factor when choosing a destination, followed by iconic landmarks and well-developed infrastructure. It is the first time the LHTB explores travellers’ perceptions of safety for the first time and it shows that the top factors that make a destination to be perceived as safe are low crime rates, clean and well-maintained tourist establishments, visible security, political stability and friendly locals.

However, travellers from each market tend to define safety differently. While political stability is viewed as paramount by travellers from certain markets, such as Japan (57%), Australia (44%) and Canada (42%), visible security takes precedence in others, especially in South Korea (55%), Brazil (51%) and China (42%).

Despite all the challenges, Europe’s iconic attractions remain a major draw for international travellers in 2025, often leading to overcrowding, especially during peak seasons. Survey results indicate that long-haul travellers remain flexible in such situations—nearly one-third would adjust their plans to visit at quieter times, 28% would proceed despite long queues, 25% would explore less crowded areas within the destination and only 5% would consider changing destinations entirely.

Moreover, once arrived in Europe, travellers are showing a growing preference for multi-destination trips. The report shows that 94% of respondents planning to visit the continent in the first four months of 2025 intend to explore more than one country. On average, long-haul travellers are looking to visit 3.4 countries, with South Korean travellers leading the trend, aiming to visit an average of 5.2 countries per trip. This trend is growing across all key markets, especially among Australian travellers, who have seen a 15% increase from 2024.

Collectively, these efforts elevated Singapore’s destination appeal and strengthened the sector’s capabilities and competitiveness,” said Melissa Ow, CEO of Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

Top markets for visitor arrivals were Mainland China (3.08 million), Indonesia (2.49 million) and India (1.20 million). Other markets that exhibited healthy year-on-year growth included Japan, Taiwan, the UK and the USA, representing a good mix of short, mid and long-haul markets.

Contributing factors included the 30-day mutual visa exemption with Mainland China and Singapore’s strong growth in air connectivity. In 2024, Changi Airport had a total international seat capacity of over 41 million, representing a 15% increase compared to 2023 and 98% recovery to 2019.

Other key factors that contributed to the overall growth in visitor arrivals include Singapore’s robust year-round calendar of lifestyle events and concerts, which has enhanced the city-state’s appeal as a premier tourist destination. Family-friendly attractions at precincts such as Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa and Mandai Wildlife Reserve, including the Bird Paradise, along with key leisure events like the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2024 and Singapore Art Week, were also instrumental in boosting visitor arrivals and spending across the tourism sector and related industries.

Visitors also spent a record amount of money, with tourism receipts reaching S$22.4 billion (€16 billion) between January and September 2024, an increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2023. Mainland China, Indonesia and Australia emerged as the top tourism receipts generating markets, contributing S$3.58 billion, S$2.13 billion and S$1.44 billion respectively.

All spend categories have shown year-on-year growth, led by Sightseeing, Entertainment & Gaming (SEG) at 25%, followed by Accommodation at 17%. Meanwhile, Food & Beverage (F&B) and Shopping saw a 6% and 5% increase respectively, with other categories such as airfares and business spending contributing to TR as well.

In addition, Singapore’s hotel industry also saw positive growth in 2024, with Average Room Rate (ARR) and Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR) increasing year-on-year, reaching S$276 (1.4% increase compared to 2023 ARR) and S$226 (3.0% increase compared to 2023 RevPAR) respectively. Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) was 81.8% in 2024, a 1.3% point increase compared to 80.5% in 2023.  There was an addition of 1,421 new hotel keys, including notable openings such as The Standard Singapore, Into the Woods and Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre.
