The United Kingdom’s largest county is set to gain a new train station that authorities hope will transform mobility across the north, bringing more reliable, frequent services and connections to the country’s major cities.

Destined for Bradford, under the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) scheme, the new rail hub will be built on the existing Bradford Interchange site. But unlike the current station, which was built as a terminus that requires trains to reverse out, the new facility will allow through trains between Leeds and Manchester, speeding up operations significantly. It will also provide a stop on the new high-speed line between Birmingham and Manchester—a route that will connect the two cities with “multiple trains an hour.”

Bradford is getting a brand-new station

Today the Government has confirmed a new station at Bradford Interchange, putting our city at the heart of Northern Powerhouse Rail.

That means more trains, quicker journeys across the North, and up to £1 billion boost for our economy.

A city this ambitious deserves a station to match. Now we’re getting one.
— Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire (@MayorOfWY) October 20, 2026

Bradford is a significant hub for services and industry in West Yorkshire, with a local economy valued by the city’s Metropolitan District Council at roughly £10 billion to £12 billion (between €11.9 billion and €14.3 billion), driven by advanced manufacturing, logistics, finance, and a growing tourism and cultural sector. Destination manager Visit Bradford estimates the city exceeded £1 billion in economic impact following its tenure as the UK’s 2025 City of Culture. The council anticipates the new station will bring in at least a further £1 billion in economic benefits.

Hailing the station development, expected to be completed some time in the 2030s, national Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “Today marks an important milestone for Bradford with a brand-new station that will transform how people travel across the north.” Her statement continued: “By bringing Northern Powerhouse Rail into the heart of the city, we are unlocking the huge potential Bradford offers – improving connections, supporting economic growth and setting the foundations for new homes, jobs and opportunities across the region.”

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire Mayor, Tracy Brabin, pointed to Bradford’s “untapped potential” and predicted that “Faster, more frequent trains to Leeds and Manchester, and the transformation of the city centre through Bradford City Village, will help to finally unleash it.”

This ironclad commitment to a new station is an important milestone for Bradford.

The city has so much untapped potential, and faster, more frequent trains to Leeds and Manchester, alongside the transformation of its centre, will help to finally unleash it. https://t.co/ADtzUKB9st
— Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire (@MayorOfWY) October 20, 2026

The former Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed in January 2026 that NPR would be delivered in three stages, with a funding cap of £45 billion, to be supplemented by local contributions. The station will fall under the newly nationalised Great British Railways (GBR), the single public sector body now tasked for the first time since the nineties with running the majority of rail infrastructure and passenger rail services across the country, alongside devolved and open-access operators.

France’s tourism chief has described the violent protests and riots that have shaken the country as “catastrophic”, while others have pointed to a spike in cancellations from prospective tourists to the world’s most visited country.

Recent weeks have seen a series of inequality protests by school students evolve into a national anti-poverty movement that has erupted into violent demonstrations, including looting, arson, and disturbing clashes between citizens and police in France’s major cities. Authorities have cracked down with curfews in a bid to quell the unrest.

But those efforts may come too late to halt reputational damage to the world’s premier tourist destination as nations around the globe proceed to issue new guidance for visitors to France, warning them to stay away from large gatherings, follow official instructions and local curfews, register with safety apps, and even postpone trips.

Christelle Cassagne, head of the national federation of French tourism institutions, ADN Tourisme, said, “The surge of violence in the centres of Nice, Paris, Lyon — it’s catastrophic.” Cassagne also noted the effect of the security problems on tourists who have booked the trip of a lifetime only to find themselves unable to access world-famous cultural sites such as the Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay because of temporary closures, saying: “When you book a hotel for a week, it is not to stay shut away in your room.”

Chers visiteurs, en raison d’un mouvement social étudiant, le musée est fermé pour le moment. Nous vous prions de nous excuser de la gêne occasionnée.

Dear visitors, due to student strikes the museum is currently closed. We apologise for the inconvenience. https://t.co/tNKFk3B9aj
— Musée du Louvre (@MuseeLouvre) October 19, 2026

Quantifying the negative impacts on the sector, Didier Arino, head of research consultancy Protourisme, said that just one day’s riots in the French capital had prompted “around a one-percent cancellation rate for the monthly count” across the next few days. Similarly, MKG Consulting said Parisian hotels were experiencing a year-on-year decline in bookings for the next month and a half, from 1 to 0.2 percentage points for stays scheduled from 20 to 29 October, and from 3.5 to 1.9 points for those from 20 to 25 October.

Meanwhile, fears are multiplying that the ripple effects of the unrest could spread far beyond French borders. The Bangkok Post has speculated that Thailand’s incoming tourism could suffer if French visitors, who usually rank second among Thailand’s largest European source markets, decide to postpone trips due to difficulties at home—for example, if temporary road closures or curfews make getting to the airport too challenging, or if widespread damage to property and vehicles impact people’s disposable income streams.

Suladda Sarutilavan, executive director Europe of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said Thailand had welcomed more than 610,000 French visitors by mid-October and described that figure as stable year over year. But official figures from Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul, released on 19 October 2026, show Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals from 1 January to 17 October 2026 were down 4.12% year-on-year. Digging into the data, the drop appears to be due to Chinese travel easing off after the end of the Golden Week holiday. Long-haul arrivals increased 10.55% week-on-week to 178,479 between 11-17 October, a rise Surasak said was driven by short school breaks in Europe and the Americas.

With further protests organised in France on Saturday, 24 October and a general strike scheduled for 5 November, transportation, access to cultural gems, and security in general could be affected. Tourism agencies and would-be travellers around the world will be watching carefully.

In news that will fascinate ophiophilists but may send shudders down others’ spines, an Asian airline has been obliged to ground one of its aircraft for a day, in order to hunt down a stray snake that seems to have slithered on board.

Japan Air Commuter, a short-haul regional arm of Japan Airlines, told press the creature was discovered under the plane’s cockpit carpet by a mechanic just before 1 pm local time, shortly after arrival at Fukuoka airport, in the southwestern prefecture of the same name, on 19 October 2026.

The aircraft had flown in from Izumo airport in Shimane, where there are two significant species of venomous snake: the mamushi (or gloydius blomhoffii)—a pit viper averaging 45 to 60 cm that is among the most common and medically concerning snakes on Japan’s main islands; and the larger yamakagashi (rhabdophis tigrinus), a rear-fanged keelback snake with potent anticoagulant venom that can cause haemorrhages.

Snakes on a Plane (for real this time)! On October 19, Japan Air Commuter (JAC/JAL Group) canceled flight JAL3653 from Fukuoka to Kagoshima after an unexpected passenger was spotted inside the aircraft.

Because untracked animals inside a cabin pose potential risks to aircraft wiring and flight safety, JAC grounded the aircraft to conduct a thorough search. The mystery was solved on the afternoon of October 20 when mechanics discovered a 40 cm (16-inch) Japanese striped snake hiding beneath the cabin carpet.

A wildlife specialist safely captured the non-venomous reptile, and the airline confirmed that all 43 affected passengers were safely rebooked.

While JAC is still investigating how the hitchhiker boarded the flight (which had previously arrived from Izumo Airport), this marks the first time a snake has ever been found aboard one of their aircraft!

#Aviation #FlightSafety #FukuokaAirport #Aviation
— FL360aero (@fl360aero) October 21, 2026

After the sighting, the aircraft’s next departure to Kagoshima was promptly cancelled, and a 24-hour search for the unidentified scaly stowaway ensued, led by a wildlife control expert. According to Kyodo News, the creature was eventually captured and identified as a juvenile Japanese striped snake or four-lined ratsnake (Elaphe quadrivirgata), measuring around 40 cm. Adults of the species can reach up to one-and-a-half metres in length.

Japanese striped snakes are non-venomous and subdue prey such as frogs or rodents through constriction. They are usually docile and pose no threat to humans, though they may bite if trapped, stepped on, or handled unkindly. A bite may cause superficial bleeding similar to a thorn injury.

The airline was unable to confirm how the snake had accessed the aircraft but thought it had probably come from the wild. It said in a statement: “As far as we can determine, there has never been a case of a snake getting into the cabin. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to passengers.”

The incident will resound with the public since snakes, like spiders, are such a common cause of fear, as well as recalling the 2006 American action thriller Snakes on a Plane, starring Samuel L. Jackson. In that instance, snakes were released as part of a plot to kill a trial witness, but when the much-hyped film was released, it was widely panned.

The film has since gained a B-movie-esque cult following, with audiences engaging in call and response along with the script, which contains the immortal line: “Enough is enough! I have had it with these mother****ing snakes on this mother****ing plane!”— sentiments that may well be shared by the mechanic and animal control worker who had to spend 24 hours searching the Japan Air ATR 42-600 narrowbody for the narrow-bodied intruder.

Concerns are mounting over the protection of European aviation infrastructure and other critical installations, after another incursion into Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany, where a number of Russian aircraft have been grounded since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

The incident involved a perimeter fence breach overnight on 17 October 2026, prompting a temporary suspension of operations in the northern section of the strategic east German cargo hub. An airport spokesperson said air traffic operations had been unaffected, and any disruption is reported to have been minimal, with, for example, an Amazon cargo plane forced to use the southern runway instead of the north.

Other reassurances were also issued. After a search by federal police and regional officers from Saxony state officers, authorities later said: “It is highly likely that a vehicle drove through the fence. However, a search of the airport grounds found neither a vehicle nor any unauthorised individuals.” Later, other outlets reported the incident had been caused by a learner driver.

BREAKING: Unknown individuals ram fence near Russian cargo planes at Leipzig airport

According to Bild, the aircraft in question are three cargo planes that have been banned from taking off since the war began.

Reuters’ report makes no mention of Russian planes, but it does confirm a large-scale police operation.

Investigators believe a vehicle likely broke through the fence. Police described it as a “security-related incident.”

Leipzig/Halle airport closed its northern runway and suspended flights on the northern side of the airfield.

On August 4, a high-profile incident occurred at the same airport: a drone equipped with explosives was found near Ukrainian cargo planes.

The German government blamed Russia for the alleged sabotage attempt.
— NEXTA (@nexta_tv) October 18, 2026

Nonetheless, the security breach follows an attempted drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at the same airport on 4 August this year, which saw the huge freight carrier, usually deployed for military assistance to Ukraine, attacked while it was parked, by three “explosive-packed drones” that were “piloted by Russian military-intelligence assets,” according to German officials. The attack in that instance was thwarted due to a combination of failed detonation and poor targeting, but the potential for a major incident and further deterioration of international relations appears high.

A study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies found 144 suspected drone sightings across 13 European countries between August 2024 and February 2026, with civilian airports, military, and critical infrastructure all in the crosshairs. Meanwhile, Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office has recorded 165 suspected acts of sabotage since the beginning of 2026.

Polish airspace now open after Russian drone incursion but Belarus border restricted

The Wall Street Journal has since alleged that intelligence reveals Russian President Vladimir Putin personally approved the intensification of hybrid attacks on European infrastructure. German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt said after the August incident that the country would put into place a comprehensive protective shield to prevent similar acts of sabotage and aggression.

But, after President Trump’s lifting of oil sanctions on Russia (amid a campaign to ease fuel prices to win electoral support in the US midterms), how Europe responds as a bloc to the ongoing threat represented by Russia is now the question on many observers’ minds. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen addressed the European Parliament on 21 October 2016, insisting that Russia could not be regarded as a trusted partner since it has already been seen to “weaponise” energy dependency. Issuing a “crystal clear” message that Europe would not lift sanctions, she called for a true European “energy union” and proposed bolstering Europe’s energy security through improved power grids, cross-border connections, and joint energy purchasing. Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa promised continued financial and military backing for Ukraine, and European leaders pledged to boost the bloc’s defences and protect critical infrastructure.

Hundreds of passengers on board a transatlantic flight to Chicago had a fright during landing on Tuesday 20 October 2026, when their aircraft blew tires due to suspected brake issues.

The American Airlines service from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport to Chicago O’Hare touched down at around 2:30 pm local time but, according to some of the 234 passengers on board, it quickly became clear there was a problem.

“We knew something was wrong because it was like nothing I’ve ever heard before on a landing. It was a nice big boom,” said passenger WoodJohn Abbate, speaking to CBS News Chicago. He described his fellow travellers as “shocked” but not “panicked.”

An American Airlines plane blew a tire when landing at Chicago O’Hare Airport on Tuesday afternoon. The FAA said the plane was American Airlines Flight 41 from Barcelona to Chicage and at around 2:30 p.m., the crew reported a brake issue and then, after landing, a blown tire. Passengers were able to deplane via the stairs and were bused to the terminal.
— CBS News (@CBSNews) October 20, 2026

The pilot reportedly informed passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 787-800, had blown some tires after the brakes had seized up. Eyewitness News reports an audio capture from air traffic control exchanges with the crew during the incident confirming the crew was aware of a potential brake problem.

“We’ve got a right brake that might be dragging. We’d like them to follow us to the gate,” one of the pilots told controllers.

In a statement, American Airlines explained that the flight was met on the runway by emergency responders “out of an abundance of caution” and that passengers had disembarked onto the tarmac via stairs and were bused to the terminal. Though no injuries were reported, one person was taken to hospital having already become unwell during the flight. The Chicago Fire Department later said the hospitalised passenger was doing fine.

NEW: Another plane blew a tire at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport yesterday, sending one person to the hospital.

American Airlines Flight 41 from Barcelona was landing at ORD and blew two tires.

The airline released this statement:

"American Airlines flight 41 experienced a tire issue after landing safely at Chicago (ORD). Per procedure, first responders met the aircraft out of an abundance of caution and customers were transported safely to the terminal by bus. The aircraft has been taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We thank our team members for their professionalism and we apologize to our customers for their experience."

This is the sixth time an aircraft has blown a tire at O’Hare this year. The FAA has been investigating the other incidents.
— Marcus Leshock (@marcusleshock) October 21, 2026

American Airlines meanwhile went on to say the aircraft was “taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team” and thanked its team members for their professionalism. “We apologise to our customers for their experience,” the carrier added. As per usual procedure, the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the problem.

The incident is not the first blown tire at the Chicago hub in recent months. According to CBS News Chicago, at least four planes sustained blown tires while taxiing or landing at O’Hare in the space of one fortnight in August 2026. However, federal authorities have identified no single common cause for the cluster of tire problems, which affected various carriers (American, United, and Southwest) across different runways, during different operations (takeoffs, landings, and taxiing). The issues could come down to brake malfunctions, weather-related stresses on equipment, runway conditions or debris, or sheer coincidence. Scrutinising the aviation accidents recorded by the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) over the last two decades reveals that tire-related problems are involved in approximately 0.3 to 0.6% of aviation events.

The CEO of Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers has warned that consumers will face “the biggest increase in airfares in history” in 2027, blaming sharp rises in jet fuel prices.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary said at a news conference in Brussels that many carriers had failed to hedge their fuel price positions to cope with the oil supply issues caused by the US-Israel war on Iran. He also noted a suite of current mergers, takeovers, and bankruptcies in the aviation sector and predicted that the ensuing decline in available seats, combined with rising fuel costs, could see airfares go up by 20%.

“You’re going to see airfares rise next year in Europe,” O ‘Leary said, adding: “I think by 10, 15, maybe 20%. You’re going to see the biggest increase in airfares, I would say, in history in Europe for the next 12 months.”

He went on to explain that while Ryanair and other European airlines had hedged their jet fuel outlay for 2026, and that Ryanair was 80% hedged at $67 per barrel to March 2027, the situation was likely to change from April 2027. Ryanair had managed to hedge 15% of its 2027 fuel costs at $85 a barrel, but remains “unhedged into the summer of 2027.” Since real-time bulk fuel prices are twice that, and most of Ryanair’s European rivals are, according to O’Leary, not as well placed, consumers could see a big hike in travel expenditure.

The media event where O’Leary made the comments took place in the Belgian capital and coincided with the Ryanair announcement that 20 routes and over a million seats would be slashed from the airline’s Belgian winter schedule out of Brussels and Charleroi, due to planned aviation tax rises. O’Leary has slammed the Belgian policy as “stupid” and said it makes the country less competitive than its neighbours.

As well, decrying individual country taxes, airlines such as Ryanair are increasingly opposed to European Union climate policies such as the Emissions Trading System (ETS) that applies to flights within the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the UK, but does not affect competitors operating elsewhere. Ryanair alone faces an ETS compliance bill of €1.5 billion in 2026.

Reported by POLITICO, O’Leary said European citizens “are paying all these environmental taxes, while the Yanks, the Asians and the Chinese land and take off in Europe completely exempt from their fair share.”

One positive point did come out of the conference, however. Having also been a vocal critic of supply chain problems that have dogged the delivery of new aircraft, O’Leary said he now expects US certification of the Boeing 737 MAX 10 to go through by the end of October 2026, meaning Ryanair is now “optimistic” they could receive 16 of the planes they have on order by the beginning of 2027.

Comparable to the Airbus A321neo, the Boeing 737 MAX 10 is significantly more fuel-efficient per seat than older 737 generations, saving between 14% and 20% in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions—an important factor going into 2027, given the fuel pressures O’Leary says the year is likely to bring.

Japan has launched a Mars mission set to bring back moon material that could illuminate the dawn of the solar system and how the two satellites orbiting one of Earth’s nearest neighbours were formed. If successful, the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) rover will become the first ever spacecraft to land on a Martian moon and collect and return moon samples to Earth for analysis—but space enthusiasts will have to wait until 2031 for that moment.

The Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft blasted off from Tanegashima Space Centre in Minamitane, Kagoshima Prefecture, on 20 October 2026, at around 4:41 am local time, powered by an H3 rocket and with thousands watching online.

Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is behind the $578-million (over €514.31 million) mission to better understand the Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos. After an embarrassing engine failure on its maiden flight in 2023, JAXA has since celebrated and confirmed that the MMX’s first milestone of this mission—the separation of the MMX from the H3 F10 rocket’s upper stage—had gone without a hitch.

Next comes a nine-month journey towards Phobos, with arrival expected in August 2027, followed by a three-year research expedition before the collected samples are brought back to Earth in 2031. Despite the long project, JAXA intends the MMX to return only around 10 grams of the moon’s material.

Scientists are in disagreement about whether the Martian moons are essentially “chips off the old block” created by something crashing into Mars, or external space debris that has been drawn into the planet’s orbit. It is hoped the sample will resolve the mystery surrounding Mars and its moons’ formation, as well as indicating “how a habitable environment for life might have arisen on the terrestrial planets,” [Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars], JAXA said.

The biggest of the two Mars moons, measuring around 27 km by 22 km by 18 km, Phobos orbits its host three times a day at an altitude of approximately 6,000 km above the red planet (known as such for its rust-coloured, iron oxide surface). While NASA has sent nine unmanned spacecraft to Mars since the mid 20th century, and China did the same in 2021, the Japanese effort will be the first time that either Phobos or its smaller sibling moon Deimos, receive a probe from Earth.

Meanwhile, NASA’s rover, Perseverance, continues to persevere across the red planet’s surface as it has been doing since 2021. Its return to Earth was blocked by President Trump in January 2026. China, on the other hand, is preparing to launch its Tianwen-3 spacecraft in 2028 with a view to returning Martian samples by 2031—meaning, if all goes well, a double welcome home for MMX and Tianwen-3 will be in order that year.

Ryanair plans to withdraw six aircraft, remove 1.1 million seats and discontinue 20 routes from its winter 2026 schedule in Belgium, linking the reductions to a planned increase in the federal aviation tax.

The low-cost Irish carrier said the changes would affect operations at Brussels Airport in Zaventem and Brussels South Charleroi Airport. Capacity will fall by more than one million seats, while Ryanair’s Charleroi base will shrink to 13 aircraft. Belga reported that around 200 jobs would be affected. Brussels Times reports that at Zaventem, Dublin is expected to remain the airline’s only route.

Belgium’s aviation tax is due to change on 1 January 2027. Ryanair described the move as an increase from €2 in January 2025 to €7. Separate reporting indicates that the current charge varies by distance: departing flights of more than 500 kilometres are taxed at €5, rising to €7, while shorter flights are already subject to a €10 levy. The government had previously considered a €10 charge for longer journeys.

Chief executive Michael O’Leary said the tax would redirect aircraft and passenger growth towards lower-cost markets. “Taxing air traffic does not deliver growth; it simply sends it elsewhere,” he said in the airline’s statement. Ryanair cited Sweden, Slovakia, Hungary, and Italy as countries where aviation taxes or airport charges have been reduced or removed.

Routes reported for removal from Zaventem include popular holiday and city break destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Marrakech, Porto, Rome Fiumicino, and Valencia. The Charleroi reductions cover Amman, Asturias, Dubrovnik, Genoa, Katowice, Łódź, Newcastle, Nîmes, Poznań, Reggio Calabria, Sarajevo, Trapani, and Warsaw Modlin. The published destination lists contain 20 named routes in total, although reports differ on how the cuts are divided between the two airports.

The airline has also warned that it could remove another one million seats in summer 2027 if the tax remains. O’Leary said fares across Europe could rise by as much as 20% over the next year as fuel hedging contracts expire and carriers face higher market prices. That forecast is separate from the Belgian tax dispute and applies to broader cost pressures facing airlines.

Ryanair has presented a seven-year Belgian growth plan under which it says 100 routes and 1,000 jobs could be added if the federal levy is abolished. Those figures are company projections rather than confirmed investment commitments.

The reductions begin with the winter schedule at the end of October, ahead of the tax change. Airlines typically allocate aircraft and finalise schedules months in advance. Aviation economist Wouter Dewulf previously told VRT that Ryanair routinely reduces its Charleroi fleet in winter because demand is weaker and aircraft undergo maintenance, suggesting taxation may not be the only factor shaping capacity.

Neither the Belgian federal government nor airport operators had provided a response to press at the time of writing. Travellers should consult the airline’s published timetable to confirm whether their service is affected. The final schedule may also change as Ryanair adjusts frequencies and aircraft deployment before the winter season begins.

Forget the iconic bucket list destinations that were making travel news after COVID-19. Booking.com’s travel predictions for 2027 suggest holidaymakers are preparing to swap familiar trip formulas for getaways driven by emotion, surprise, and personal priorities. The company’s 11th annual forecast, informed by a survey of 28,230 travellers across 32 countries and territories, identifies nine trends that collectively point towards a more flexible—and sometimes stranger—way of seeing the world.

The headline idea is the “Plot Twist trip”: a break chosen precisely because it seems out of character. Globally, 77% of respondents expressed interest in taking such a holiday, while 36% wanted their choice to surprise friends and family. Food & Wine’s US-focused report indicates an even stronger appetite among American travellers, with 79% interested and 47% keen to generate a reaction. The impulse is not simply novelty for novelty’s sake; it reflects a desire to escape the predictable identities and itineraries reinforced by social media.

© Booking.com

Where travellers go may increasingly depend on how they hope to feel. Booking.com calls this “Vibe Check(in)”: 81% of global respondents would select a destination according to a desired emotional state, and 76% would use a mood-based recommendation tool. That could favour places able to answer a particular need—energy, calm, culture, connection, or adventure—rather than destinations trading mainly on name recognition.

Personalisation also extends to price, packaging, and trip partners. A trend dubbed “Social Currency” sees half of those surveyed reconsidering a travel companion because of different spending habits, and 38% have removed someone from a group altogether. Meanwhile, an “All-exclusive” trend challenges the traditional all-inclusive model: 66% want the option to strip out services they will not use. Diet, sobriety, and changing wellness habits are making a vast buffet or open bar less persuasive than a package built around individual value.

Technology is increasingly shaping not only the booking process but also the escape itself. For nearly two-thirds of global travellers, Booking’s “Powered by AI” trend moves away from merely using AI to suggest itineraries, towards an AI agent handling elements of their work such as basic email monitoring while they are away.

© Booking.com

In the air, expectations are rising too. Booking.com’s “Hotel in the Sky” prediction finds 89% would take a long-haul journey if they could be assured of arriving refreshed, creating an opening for sleep-supporting menus, jet-lag-conscious lighting, and quieter cabin areas. As already reported by Travel Tomorrow, airlines are already leaning into this push for premium products.

Some of the forecast sits far outside conventional thoughts about wellness, with 65% of respondents interested in paranormal travel, and 48% who would seek a “Trip to the Beyond” or an experience intended to help them contact someone on the “other side”. Elsewhere, a trend for “Sweat Synergy” turns physical effort into a social catalyst: among respondents who had travelled alone, 66% said a shared challenge created a lasting friendship. Couples, too, may take to “Trailside Therapy,” with walking and hiking identified as useful settings for difficult conversations.

Booking expands AI features for speedier, more intuitive travel searches

The destination list accompanying the report raises the profile of Reims, Bratislava, and Pescara in Europe, while Sendai, Christchurch, Rosario, and Asunción broaden the field beyond the usual headline global cities. These choices suit travellers looking for discovery without following the most obvious route.

As with any forward-looking consumer survey, Booking’s predictions describe intentions rather than guaranteed behaviour. Yet the themes are coherent: travellers want greater control over what they buy, more freedom to subvert expectations, and better tools for matching a trip to a feeling. In 2027, the ultimate luxury may not be excess, but permission to change the script.

As peak summer travel for the northern hemisphere draws to a close and the season of Halloween breaks, Thanksgiving, and Christmas markets begins, thoughts turn to reviewing the year, its trends, and its biggest travel stories. As in previous years, the influence of online culture on people’s travel habits is once again rearing its head.

Examples of poor tourist behaviour abound, whether its refusing to put one’s phone camera down and causing a Venice gondola to capsize; vandalising ancient monuments or mountains; taking off one’s clothes at a sacred site; failing to respect local parking restrictions; or climbing on and breaking statues on a night out.

A user shared a video of tourists blocking a KL road to take photos with the Twin Towers, causing outrage online. The clip shows cars dodging the blocked lane while the tourists continue posing. https://t.co/al3p6MMCgk
— Malay Mail (@malaymail) November 29, 2024

Such faux pas are driven, some argue, by new supposed norms seen on social media. Others point out that the ubiquitous availability of information online should make it easier to research a destination and be aware and respectful of etiquette rules there. So, what are the explanations for anti-social tourism, and can we do better?

Lauren A. Siegel, a lecturer in tourism at the UK’s University of Greenwich, has conducted research asking whether social media helps or hurts destinations. Writing for CNN Travel, she has asserted that when we see people we are accustomed to seeing in our home contexts transplanted somewhere else, we (perhaps subconsciously) assume that home context behaviours will be okay transplanted into that new place too. In other words, travellers “look to social media for proof of how others behave. If their peers from home are throwing caution to the wind while on vacation, this can cause a domino effect of bad behavior.”

In addition to creating a shared complacency about bad manners, online culture makes the world seem like an ever smaller, ever more familiar place, pushing even those who despise selfies and mainstream events or destinations to venture further and further into previously quiet outposts where locals once could gain respite from visitors, but no longer can.

Japan, The water at a chozuya is not your personal drain for gargling and spitting!!

A chozuya is not a place for tourists to wash off their sweat. It is a sacred place that has been carefully preserved for generations, where worshippers quietly purify themselves before praying.

Stop immediately with the outrageous behavior of sticking your face into the water, washing your head, and spitting dirty water back out. Those who desecrate a sacred place that values purity as if it were nothing more than a garbage dump may face the wrath of the gods.

Could you behave with the same disrespect at the holy water of a historic temple or cathedral in your own country and act as if nothing were wrong?

If we keep letting this slide with the excuse of “I didn’t know,” Japan’s precious sacred spaces will eventually be ruined, and visitors may no longer be allowed anywhere near the chozuya. https://t.co/tq2xR3fYmu
— KUNOICHI _可愛くノ一 (@hokkori_buzz) September 12, 2026

On top of that, the very urge to post online about one’s travels is part of the problem. Instagram is particularly to blame, Siegel, says, creating a culture where unless we immortalise and show off our trips, we feel like they didn’t exist, as younger generations say: “photo or it didn’t happen.” While some destination managers would be delighted to multiply their hashtags and visibility, the queuing, crowding, jostling, and sometimes dangerous extremes to which people will go to get the perfect shot have caused local consternation from Japan’s Mount Fuji to the English Cotswolds.

Is it any wonder then, that more and more destinations are issuing behavioural guidelines, advising guests how better to fit in, or exacting financial penalties when their rules are not followed? Take Amsterdam, a city so “blessed” with visitors that it could afford to tell certain types to stay away, or Málaga and the Sables d’Olonne, where, like most places in fact, discretion and decency are prized.

Whatever you think about Stalin, Polish tourists behaving like this at a memorial in Georgia is simply disrespectful, especially when a local is calmly asking them to stop. https://t.co/rmuppPeZqC
— Irakli Dekanosidze (@ishowdeka) October 18, 2026

Other destinations are using carrots rather than sticks to try to encourage the sort of tourism they would like to see. Copenhagen’s CopenPay scheme offers rewards to tourists who can prove they have participated in sustainable or green activities. It’s proved to be such a success that the idea has spread. Fiji has introduced “Loloma Hour” asking guests to give something back to conservation projects and communities, and Switzerland has launched “Swisstainable,” providing discounted rates on eco accommodation and transport.

What can we learn from all this about how to behave when we are away from home? Taking a cue from a range of rule lists, guidelines, and incentive schemes around the world, we can safely say visitors will likely be welcomed if they:

Research and respect local cultures.

If unsure how to behave or where to go, ask—preferably a local human being rather than the internet which might give dangerous misinformation. Hotel concierges, visitor information centres, tour operators all know the area—this is their bread and butter.

Cover up with clothes in sacred places and in public, where that is the norm.

Do not climb on infrastructure or monuments.

Leave no trace – whether its graffiti or litter. No one wants to see it.

Use public transport, avoiding rush hours when locals are trying to get to work.

Buy authentic, locally-made souvenirs .

Find out how you can contribute to local projects (without taking over!)

Put the phone and selfie stick down and properly experience the destination through your own senses.

Smile at people, not into a screen.

These simple actions can make a significant difference, helping visitors enjoy their travels while respecting the communities and environments they encounter.
