When I travel across Central Asia in the course of my work, I am often accompanied by international colleagues — Germans, Europeans, people who are visiting the region for the first time.

Almost without exception, I hear the same question:

“How is it possible that you communicate so effortlessly here? How does everything feel so familiar to you?”

My answer usually surprises them.

I explain that what they are witnessing is not coincidence, nor personal talent, but something much deeper: a shared linguistic and cultural foundation. The majority of the region speaks Turkic languages — distinct, yet deeply connected; different, yet instantly recognisable to anyone who carries the same linguistic roots. Turkic languages form a family, and for those who speak one of them, large parts of this geography feel unexpectedly familiar.

Let me illustrate this with a small “field study” from my own life. What follows is not a linguistic rule, but a best-case illustration of how these connections can sometimes appear.

My family name is Altuntepe — a Turkish compound of two words: altun, an old Turkic form of “altın” meaning “gold”, and tepe, meaning “hill”.

What is fascinating is how these two words appear, with slight phonetic variations, across several Turkic languages:

in Turkish: Altuntepe

in Azerbaijani Altuntəpə

in Uzbek: Oltintepa

in Turkmen Altyndepe

in Kazakh Altyntöbe

in Kyrgyz Altyndobo

in Uyghur Altyntepe

Same words. Same meaning.

So when I travel across Central Asia, I don’t feel like a foreign visitor. I feel connected through a linguistic heritage older than most nation-states — different expressions of the same cultural universe, a place where even my surname literally feels at home.

I always say speaking a Turkic language feels like being at home across a vast expanse — from the Tian Shan mountains all the way to the Anatolian peninsula and beyond. Not because everything is identical, but because echoes remain: in words, in sounds, in gestures, in shared cultural codes.

This is what the Turkic Language Family truly means to me: continuity, connection, and a shared story stretching across continents.

Why 15 December Matters Today

This historical continuity was formally acknowledged only recently at the international level. In October, during UNESCO’s General Conference held in Samarkand — itself one of the great historical centres of the Turkic world — a landmark decision was taken to proclaim 15 December as World Turkic Language Family Day. The proposal was submitted jointly by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan, with the support of 21 UNESCO Member States.

The chosen date refers to 15 December 1893, when the Danish linguist Vilhelm Thomsen announced the successful decipherment of the Orkhon inscriptions. The Orkhon inscriptions are widely regarded as the oldest known written records in which the name “TURK” appears, carved into stone rather than written on perishable material.

© Dalya Altuntepe

For a civilisation shaped by movement and mobility, this choice feels strikingly deliberate: what could have been lost on paper was instead entrusted to stone — ensuring that memory would endure long after journeys continued.

Today, languages of the Turkic language family are spoken natively by more than 200 million people across an area of approximately 12 million square kilometres, making this heritage not only regional but global in scale.

The Turkic Language Family is not limited to Central Asia or modern nation-states. It stretches from China and parts of Russia, across the Caucasus, through Anatolia and Iran, into the Middle East, including millions of Turkic-speaking populations in Syria and Iraq, and further into the Balkans and Europe. Today, Europe alone hosts a Turkic-speaking population larger than the total population of several Turkic republics. Our linguistic family crosses borders — and connects worlds.

The declaration of World Turkic Language Family Day by UNESCO recognises language as a shared human asset — one that connects communities, carries memory across generations, and contributes meaningfully to humanity’s cultural diversity.

For me, this recognition resonates deeply, because it refers to a place and a moment I encountered long before — in the remote Orkhon Valley in Mongolia, where these inscriptions stand.

© Dalya Altuntepe

Where I chose to begin

When I first began travelling across Central Asia as a tourism professional, one of my earliest journeys took me to Mongolia. This was a very conscious decision. As someone deeply interested in Turkic history and cultural memory, I felt that before exploring the contemporary Turkic world, I needed to start at what I personally considered its zero point. For me, that place was the Orkhon Valley. I wanted to experience the origins first — to build my understanding and memory from the very beginning, before tracing the routes, influences and transformations that followed across Central Asia and beyond.

© Dalya Altuntepe

Only by standing at that starting point, I believed, could I meaningfully interpret the layers that came later. The Orkhon inscriptions are among the earliest written records in which the name “TURK” appears. They represent not mythology or legend, but tangible historical testimony carved into stone. While academic interpretations continue to evolve, these monuments remain a powerful symbol of how identity, language and statehood were articulated in written form at a very early stage.

Because Mongolia’s travel season is extremely short — barely three to four months due to its harsh climate — I planned my visit carefully. I travelled in July, timing my journey to coincide with Naadam, Mongolia’s national festival. It is during these summer weeks that the country known as the Land of the Eternal Blue Sky reveals its most striking colours and vastness.

After witnessing Naadam, we continued toward the Orkhon Valley. The journey itself was an experience: hours of travel across an immense, open landscape, far from urban centres, over rough terrain and endless green plains. There were no conventional roads — only traces across the steppe, a quiet river cutting through the valley, and an overwhelming sense of scale and stillness.

In this setting, the inscriptions appeared almost unexpectedly: one standing outdoors, exposed to the elements; the other housed within a modest museum nearby. Reaching the site was challenging, but the final approach was surprisingly smooth — thanks to infrastructure developed with support from Türkiye, including the access road and the museum itself.

The museum provided essential historical context, situating the Orkhon inscriptions within the broader cultural and political landscape of their time. The Orkhon inscriptions are linked to central figures of the Göktürk period such as Bilge Khagan, Kül Tigin and Tonyukuk. Together, they convey early reflections on leadership, authority and the relationship between rulers and society, offering a rare written window into how statehood and collective identity were articulated in the early Turkic world.

Long before language entered global discourse, the Orkhon Valley had already secured its place as one of the most remarkable cultural landscapes on Earth. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2004, the Orkhon Valley is valued not for a single monument or civilisation, but for its unique continuity of human presence. For thousands of years, this vast steppe corridor has hosted successive nomadic empires, capitals, trade routes, belief systems and political centres — from early Turkic polities and the Göktürk Khaganate to the Uyghur Empire, and later the Mongol Empire with its capital, Karakorum.

What makes the Orkhon Valley exceptional is its harmony between culture and nature. The open grasslands, the Orkhon River, the wide horizon and the silence of the steppe are not merely a backdrop, but an integral part of how societies here lived, governed and moved.

For travellers today, Mongolia offers something increasingly rare: space, scale and historical depth without spectacle. The Orkhon Valley invites visitors to slow down, to read the land, and to experience history not as a sequence of dates, but as a geography shaped by movement and encounter. It is a destination where one can still sense how civilisations met, interacted and influenced one another.

It is within this broader context that the Orkhon Valley gains additional meaning, with 15 December now recognised by UNESCO as World Turkic Language Family Day. Seen from here — where language was once carved into stone to outlast time itself — this recognition reminds us that language is far more than a tool of communication.

Language is identity.

Language is memory.

And sometimes — even your surname tells the story.

On this meaningful day, I extend my warmest congratulations to all Turkic-speaking peoples around the world, and celebrate the shared linguistic heritage that connects us beyond borders and generations.

Every year on 27 September, the global tourism community celebrates World Tourism Day, reminding us that tourism goes beyond leisure and highlighting its value as a force for dialogue, growth and connection. This year, the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” places the spotlight on how travel can drive systemic change when rooted in good governance, inclusivity and long-term vision.

Reading this theme, the country that most strongly reflects it to me these days is Turkmenistan. And the timing could not be more symbolic: every year, on the very same day that the world celebrates tourism, Turkmenistan also celebrates its Independence Day – a double reminder that transformation is as much about preserving identity as it is about opening up to the world. In recent years, I have witnessed this transformation first-hand by engaging in tourism development conferences and exchanges with officials there, from strengthening cultural diplomacy to opening new pathways for sustainable tourism.

Tourism as a driver for economic diversification and inclusion

One of the most concrete examples of this transformation could be seen this August, when Turkmenistan hosted the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Avaza, its serene resort town on the Caspian coast. The event brought together governments, international organisations and experts to discuss connectivity, sustainable growth and the role of tourism as a driver of diversification. Known for its calm shoreline and welcoming atmosphere, Avaza proved to be a fitting setting for such an international gathering, blending natural beauty with the spirit of dialogue.

At the Youth Forum, where I was invited to speak, I underlined a reality often overlooked: for many travellers, holidays are still synonymous with beaches and coastlines. For landlocked countries, this perception can be a barrier, one that can only be overcome by offering something stronger — an authentic cultural identity and meaningful experiences that place destinations on the global map.

I emphasised that safeguarding cultural heritage is as vital as climate action, because the two go hand in hand. Without preserving culture, we risk losing the very stories that make these destinations unique. Beyond tourism, cultural heritage nurtures social cohesion and local pride, anchoring communities even as they open up to the world.

© Dalya Altuntepe

For emerging destinations like Turkmenistan, there is also a rare opportunity to design tourism differently: prioritising quality over quantity, and sustainability over short-term gain. Such an approach can create high-value, low-impact experiences that protect identity while driving inclusive growth.

These discussions resonated strongly in other sessions of the conference, reinforcing one clear message: tourism is not peripheral for landlocked countries; it is central to their economic resilience and global visibility. As a member of UN Tourism, Turkmenistan is part of this global conversation, translating international goals into local action. This vision resonates strongly with this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, underlining how the country is aligning its tourism journey with global calls for sustainability and inclusivity.

Cultural nights on the Caspian coast

Turkmenistan’s commitment to transformation is not only global but also regional. The Avaza conference made this clear in practice: alongside high-level debates, the evenings were dedicated to Central Asia Days, where neighbouring countries showcased their heritage, art and traditions. These cultural exchanges highlighted Turkmenistan’s path of collaboration — building bridges with its closest partners and presenting the region as a shared tourism destination.

Along the shoreline, each country set up its own pavilion, vibrant spaces where national heritage, crafts and flavours came to life. Strolling past the pavilions felt like walking through a living tapestry of the region’s shared heritage, reminding everyone of what makes the region unique: its art, its music, its vibrant colours and its warm, welcoming people.

Every night, a different country took the stage. Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan brought their music, art and traditions to life, while Azerbaijan, with its deep cultural and historical ties to the region and its shared Caspian coastline, added its own distinctive colours to the programme. Concerts, traditional dance performances, art exhibitions and food tastings turned the conference into a living showcase of the region’s diversity.

What struck me most was how natural and effortless the spirit of collaboration felt. These were not separate showcases by individual nations but a shared statement that Central Asia is a single, vibrant tourism market with enormous potential. Watching delegates, artists and visitors mingle in front of the pavilions, I couldn’t help but feel that the region’s real strength lies in this ability to work together rather than compete.

Azerbaijan’s contribution stood out for its scale and authenticity. The delegation arrived on a chartered flight, bringing officials, artists and priceless pieces from national museums, including exquisite carpets that reflected the country’s rich heritage. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture, Azerbaijan’s pavilion and evening programmes were a highlight of the Cultural Days. The country’s most renowned singers and traditional dance ensembles took the stage, sharing Azerbaijan’s cultural richness with guests from around the world and leaving a lasting impression.

Uzbekistan also made a statement that was impossible to miss. Its national pavilion, designed as a traditional Uzbek hovli (inner courtyard), quickly became one of the most visited attractions of the conference. Walking through it felt like stepping into the essence of Uzbek culture: intricate models of Registan Square and the Khudoyar Khan Palace, vibrant textiles and pottery, finely crafted woodwork and traditional household items. The pavilion also highlighted climate initiatives and innovative approaches to sustainable development, striking a balance between heritage and progress.

Weeks before the conference began, Uzbekistan’s team had already arrived in Avaza to prepare the pavilion — a level of commitment reflected in every detail. Beyond its cultural showcase, the country’s participation was both strategic and multi-layered, reaffirming Uzbekistan’s focus on regional integration and sustainable development.

The strong commitment of neighbouring countries in Avaza showed that regional cooperation is not only a matter of diplomacy but also of tourism. Turkmenistan’s close ties with its neighbours create opportunities for combined itineraries linking the Caspian shores with Silk Road heritage. In a region where travellers increasingly seek multi-country journeys, such partnerships strengthen Turkmenistan’s position both as a destination in its own right and as a natural bridge connecting Central Asia across the Caspian with the Caucasus. This inclusive approach benefits not only Turkmenistan but also the entire region, because in Central Asia and the Caspian region, progress in tourism can only be sustainable when it is holistic, interconnected and not limited by national borders.

© Dalya Altuntepe

New pathways for accessibility and connectivity

Looking ahead, several developments are set to shape Turkmenistan’s tourism landscape in concrete ways. Preparations are underway for an electronic visa system, which will simplify entry and make the country more accessible to international visitors. New direct flight connections, including the long-anticipated resumption of routes with Uzbekistan, are in preparation and expected to further enhance regional mobility and open the door to multi-country itineraries linking the Caspian shores with Silk Road heritage. Turkmenistan is also working on restoring flight connections with Almaty, underscoring a shared commitment to strengthening tourism and trade cooperation across the region.

Equally important for travellers is the sense of safety. According to Safeture Risk Maps 2025, Turkmenistan is classified among the world’s low-risk destinations. This reputation is closely tied to the country’s long-standing policy of Permanent Neutrality, a principle that has anchored its stability and peace-oriented image for three decades. This year, on 12 December, Turkmenistan will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that neutrality — a milestone that reflects its diplomatic identity and strengthens its positioning as a secure and welcoming destination for visitors. For tourism, neutrality is more than a foreign policy stance; it is a guarantee of stability and an invitation to explore a destination where heritage, hospitality and harmony converge.

© Dalya Altuntepe

Taken together, these steps reflect a journey that is still unfolding but already transformative. With vision and resilience, Turkmenistan has the opportunity to turn symbolism into substance — writing a story that is authentic, inclusive and built to last. In this light, on this double occasion of World Tourism Day and Independence Day, warm congratulations go to Turkmenistan for embodying both identity and transformation: rooted in heritage, guided by hospitality, sustained by peace and inspired by vision.

At the foot of the Fergana Valley, where mountains meet orchards and craft traditions bloom like the gardens themselves, lies a city that has mastered the art of celebration: Namangan.

Each spring, it transforms into the floral heart of Central Asia, and in 2025 I had the privilege of witnessing this transformation first-hand.

The 64th International Flower Festival: A city in bloom

On 25 May 2025, Namangan opened its arms to the world for the 64th edition of the International Flower Festival, one of Central Asia’s most vibrant and joyful cultural events. Held at the Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur Culture and Recreation Park, the festival welcomed visitors with a dazzling parade of over 200 flower-adorned cars, rolling across a 10-kilometre route from Namangan International Airport to the city centre.

As a tourism professional, I see cultural festivals not merely as events but as living portals into a region’s soul. They bring together what makes travel truly meaningful: authentic encounters with local traditions, music, cuisine, and people. In one setting, visitors can experience the rhythm of a place not as passive observers but as participants. For me, festivals like Namangan’s are essential to cultural travel. They create space for both celebration and understanding, offering glimpses into how communities express identity, memory, and joy.

Aksikent: Beyond the blossoms

While the flowers drew crowds, Namangan’s soul lies deeper, in its history, its people, and its roots.

During the visit, we had the opportunity to explore Aksikent, an ancient Silk Road city located just 30 kilometres from Namangan. Once a flourishing centre of trade and culture, Aksikent dates back over two millennia but is perhaps best known today as the birthplace of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire.

Throughout my travels across Asia, I’ve encountered traces of Babur’s legacy in many remarkable places.

In India, his presence is monumental. As the founder of the Mughal Empire, he laid the foundations of a dynasty that would shape the region’s politics, culture, literature and architecture for centuries.

In Kyrgyzstan, I visited Suleiman-Too, the mountain overlooking Osh where Babur is believed to have spent time in reflection before setting out for India. It was here, feeling confined by the limits of his homeland, that he dreamt of expanding into India. Standing on that peak, with the vast Fergana Valley stretching out below, I could sense the spiritual atmosphere that must have once stirred his soul.

In Uzbekistan, his legacy is woven deeply into the nation’s literature, education and historical memory. In Afghanistan, I had the opportunity to visit his final resting place in Bagh-e Babur, a serene garden in Kabul, where Babur was buried in accordance with his will. Although he died in India, he wished to be laid to rest in the land he cherished most. Even in modern-day Türkiye, Babur’s impact is symbolically recognized. One of the sixteen stars on the official Presidency Seal represents the Mughal Empire, acknowledged as one of the historical Turkic states due to Babur’s Chagatai Turkic origin and imperial lineage.

Yet despite all these encounters, standing in Aksikent, the very place where Babur was born, carried a unique and personal resonance. It wasn’t just about tracing his legacy. It was about returning to the beginning of a story that would reshape empires and cultures across the continent.

Walking among the ruins, it was easy to imagine the rhythm of markets, the footsteps of travellers, the dreams of poets. Here, history felt both distant and alive, especially when we were joined by a 15th-generation descendant of Babur. His presence and our conversations brought history into the present, a powerful reminder that heritage is not only etched in stone or recorded in books, but also passed on through people and memory.

When I received an invitation to attend the International Carpet Festival in Baku, I already had some expectations. As a tourism professional with a focus on Central Asia and cultural heritage, I had visited many capitals, attended numerous forums and explored countless cities with deep histories. But Baku exceeded every expectation — not because it tried to resemble somewhere else, but precisely because it doesn’t.

The festival itself was a powerful experience. Held for the first time in an international format, it transformed Baku’s historic Icherisheher (Old City) into a living tapestry. Over three days — starting with a forum and continuing with public exhibitions — the streets became galleries, lined with traditional Azerbaijani carpets from various regions. Some were laid across cobbled alleyways, others hung between centuries-old walls. As visitors walked through, the distinction between exhibition and environment disappeared. It wasn’t just a display — it felt like home.

Each carpet told a story. Some reflected the geography they came from, others bore the symbols of generations past. Workshops were held where artisans demonstrated weaving techniques passed down over centuries. The open-air setting, accompanied by live music, added an almost cinematic beauty. I saw international visitors moved not only by the craftsmanship, but by the atmosphere — it was not a museum; it was a cultural embrace.

© Travel Tomorrow

The spirit of the festival captured something essential about Baku itself. This city is not to be compared. It is sometimes called “The Paris of the Caucasus” by travel writers and influencers. Having traveled extensively across the world and worked across cultures and continents, I can say this with confidence: Baku is not a version of anything else. It is original.

The city captivated me to such an extent that I decided to extend my stay beyond the official program of the festival. Over the years, working across many regions and capitals has shaped in me a certain instinct — a sense for places that deserve to be understood more deeply. Baku triggered that instinct.

So I stayed.

Not for leisure, but out of a professional intuition and desire to listen, to observe, to walk — and to understand. And Baku rewarded it with insight.

Ready to dive into the rich tradition of Azerbaijani carpets? Join the International Carpet Festival in Icherisheher, Baku, as we celebrate 25 years of Icherisheher's UNESCO World Heritage status and 15 years of Azerbaijani carpet weaving being recognized by UNESCO.

On May… pic.twitter.com/mQ7qpU82xf
— Experience Azerbaijan (@ExperienceAZE) April 8, 2025

I spent my days exploring the city entirely on foot. I visited local markets, museums, stepped into everyday places like shopping centers, and let myself experience the rhythm of daily life.

One evening, I went to the cinema alone and watched a historical film about Azerbaijan — in a language I don’t fully understand, yet still entirely absorbed. Baku made me want to understand everything: the stories, the signs, the people, the past. That, I believe, is the mark of a city that speaks to you.

Geographically, Baku is remarkably well-positioned. A short flight connects it to major cities such as Istanbul, Tashkent, Bishkek and beyond. But more importantly, it connects worlds: not quite Central Asia, not quite Anatolia — it is where the Caucasus breathes between Europe and Asia.

It is also the only capital city in the region located on a coastline and the Hazar (Caspian) Sea gives Baku a unique coastal identity. But make no mistake — this is not a soft Mediterranean town. The city is known as the City of Winds for a reason. The breeze here has character — unpredictable, sometimes strong, always present — shaping the city’s mood and motion.

Walking through Baku, I found a rare aesthetic harmony. Soviet-era structures, modern towers like the Flame Towers, French-style balconies, and traditional stonework coexist not in contrast but in conversation. The architecture doesn’t clash; it complements. Add to that the manicured green spaces, the sound of birdsong in city parks, and the remarkable cleanliness — not just physical, but visual and emotional clarity. This city soothes.

Art and culture are not confined to galleries. You encounter high-quality street musicians in parks, underpasses, and public squares. Some play the traditional tar, others modern instruments, but all with a level of professionalism that turns the city into an open-air stage. Baku reminds us that art should not be a luxury — it is a public right. You walk, you pause, you listen. And something shifts within.

Museums and cultural centers further reinforce this richness. And in every corner, you find traditional carpet motifs — embedded in benches, sidewalks, street lamps, and walls. The city doesn’t just showcase heritage; it breathes it.

Yes, Baku has traffic like any large city. But even there, I noticed something unusual: the absence of chaos. Drivers are patient. Horns are rare. There is a rhythm to the city’s movement — calm, deliberate and dignified.

And if you wish to take a break from the city, you can — easily. Within an hour’s drive lie places like Gobustan National Park or the newly developed Sea Breeze coastal resort, offering day trips into nature or seaside rest. Baku allows you to live both the intensity of the city and the calm of its periphery.

In the end, what impressed me most was the sense of coherence — visual, cultural and social. In Baku, even the people seem in tune with the city’s character: the way they dress, move and inhabit public spaces echoes the same calm elegance found in its architecture and streets.

Many capitals are layered, chaotic or disconnected — beautiful in parts, but lacking dialogue between those parts. Baku is different. It speaks in one voice.

A capital of rhythm, grace and depth — and above all, a city with soul.
