On 11 May 2026, Apple Corps Ltd, the company founded by The Beatles, announced it would be opening an official seven-floor fan experience on 3 Savile Row. The central London location is well-known to avid fans of the pop group; not only did it serve as Apple Corps Ltd headquarters from 1968 to 1972, but it was also the location where Let It Be was recorded and where The Beatles gave their last public performance on 30 January 1969.

“It was such a trip to get back to 3 Savile Row recently and have a look around. There are so many special memories within the walls, not to mention the rooftop. The team have put together some really impressive plans, and I’m excited for people to see it when it’s ready,” Paul McCartney said about the upcoming project.

The concert on 30 January 1969 has since become an important part of music history. In the middle of the day and after insistence by group member John Lennon, The Beatles gave their last public performance from the rooftop of 3 Savile Row. The gig, which included songs such as Don’t Let Me Down, I’ve Got A Feelin’, and Get Back – quickly created chaos as fans gathered around, and after 42 minutes, the police put an end to the matter. In 1970, the band broke up.

“Wow, it’s like coming home,” drummer Ringo Starr commented on revisiting 3 Savile Row.

The immersive experience, which will be called The Beatles at 3 Savile Row, should open its doors in 2027. Allegedly, the idea was first introduced by Tom Greene, CEO of Apple Corps since 2025, who worked on the Harry Potter franchise in the past.

 Although not all details about the project have been unveiled just yet, fans will be able to visit a recreation of the basement studio where Let It Be was recorded and to relive the Beatles’ rooftop concert in the exact same spot. The Beatles at 3 Savile Row will also include a shop where fans can buy licensed Beatles products.

“Well, you go in on the ground floor, and there’s memorabilia and stuff like that. Then you work your way up through the building, and [see] various things that happened here and there, until you get to the top, where you go out on the roof and pretend to be a Beatle,” Paul McCartney summarised the experience.

The Beatles at 3 Savile Row will be the first The Beatles experience. Neither Liverpool‘s Beatles Museum nor the Beatles Story are officially licensed, while popular The Beatles spots such as Abbey Road are easily visitable but not necessarily adapted to the crowds that often gather around.

The history of the Guide Michelin starts in 1900. André and Edouard Michelin, brothers and founders of the MICHELIN tyre factory in Clermont-Ferrand, are looking to expand their business. In a time with rocky roads, no internet connection, and very few facilities catered specifically for chauffeurs, they decided to create something unheard of.

“This book will be published at the turn of the century, and it will last just as long,” André Michelin wrote in the first guide.

The so-called Guide Michelin was initially printed in 35,000 copies and was gifted to Michelin customers buying a set of tyres. Inside, chauffeurs were able to find a collection of maps as well as a list of restaurants, mechanics, hotels, doctors, and any other information that André and Edouard Michelin found to be handy while on the road.

At first glance, their goal was simple: “To provide all information that may be useful to a driver travelling in France, regarding refuelling their vehicle, having it repaired, finding accommodation and food, and sending mail, telegrams or making telephone calls.”

However, the brothers’ actual purpose was mainly financially driven. If chauffeurs started to drive more frequently and over longer distances, they would use their tyres more quickly, thus improving the company’s sales turnover.

Starting from 1920, the Guide Michelin turned a page. Michelin started selling the guide for 7 francs, allegedly because André Michelin had seen a mechanic using the previously free book as a wedge. By then, the guide had become sufficiently well-known for chauffeurs to want to buy a copy.

The first stars

Finally, the first Michelin star made its appearance in 1926. At the start, the star simply indicates “good tables”, without much explanation. Five years later, a second and third star were added to the book, as well as some extra information concerning the different categories. One star indicated a “very good restaurant”, two stars “excellent cooking, worth a detour”, and three stars meant “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”. Since then, those categories have largely remained identical.

However, chauffeurs have to wait another two years, until 1933, for the introduction of special Michelin inspectors. Those anonymous Michelin employees toured France in order to find the best restaurants and hotels, ranking them following a list of criteria, from budget-proof quality to exquisite treats.

Since the start of the Michelin guide and the Michelin stars, much has changed, but the three-star system has remained. In 2026, the collection covers 28 titles in more than 25 countries, and several other restaurant categories have been added over the years. For example, the so-called Bib Gourmand indicate “high-quality food at great value”, while the Green stars have been introduced specifically to recognise sustainable gastronomy.

As of mid-June 2026, those who are travelling to the Mediterranean and are used to booking a ride via the Uber app will be able to enjoy yet another means of transportation. Uber and boat booking platform Click&Boat are joining forces, meaning Uber users will get to book a boat ride from their usual app just as easily as a normal taxi.

With a fleet of some 55,000 ships, Click&Boat has quite the expertise when it comes to boat rentals. According to the company, the aim is to make sailing accessible to as many people as possible, even those without a license or technical knowledge, and to integrate boating into everyday mobility habits.

In 2024, Uber and Click&Boat already teamed up during the Olympics to offer free river cruises on the Seine River. At the time, customers could book a free 1-hour trip with a skipper on an electric vessel in order to see the city from a different perspective.

How does it work?

When booking through the Uber app, customers will be able to choose from a catalogue of themed experiences, such as sunset sails, water sports, appetisers at sea, or day trips to hidden coves. The collaboration will be launching across 23 coastal cities in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Croatia, including Split, Dubrovnik, Saint-Tropez, Nice, Mallorca, Barcelona, and Ibiza.

Through Uber, travellers will have access to a range of daily rentals with a skipper. Not only is the one-day format the most popular among boaters according to Click&Boat, but it is also the perfect way to enjoy the water peacefully.

Customers who book an Uber Boat through the app will get to enjoy the same prices as those applied by the Click&Boat platform, which currently shows fees starting from €250 to €3,000 per day. However, Uber One members get 10% worth in credits when booking a boat ride.

It is not the first time Uber has offered boat journeys through their app. In 2020, Uber and Thames Clippers launched the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service. The river bus serves 24 piers across London and can be booked starting from £6.20 per ride, while the service is also available to Oyster Card users. Uber Yacht was previously available in popular destinations such as Ibiza, Greece, and Venice.

Uber Boat seems to be yet another way for Uber to expand the services offered through the Uber app, after having recently announced a collaboration with Expedia to also include hotel bookings.

In April 2026, the European Tourism: Trends & Prospects report by the European Travel Commission already painted a record picture of arrivals and overnight stays in Europe. Since the beginning of the year and despite a difficult global situation, Europe has seen a 5.6% increase in international tourist arrivals and a 5.5% increase in overnight stays.

The European airport trade body ACI EUROPE has confirmed a positive trend on 13 May 2026 in its traffic report for March and the first quarter of 2026. According to ACI, passenger traffic across the European airport network increased by 3.8% in March compared to the same month in 2025. Despite the conflict in the Middle East, which started on 28 February, passenger traffic thus remained on a similar level as in February (4.2%)

“Overall, the first month of the Middle East war has once again highlighted the resilience of demand for air transport in the face of another major geopolitical shock. Many European airports lost direct connectivity to the region, but those traffic flows connecting onward to Asia rapidly adapted through alternative direct and indirect routings. To some extent, this even supported intra-European traffic flows, while the transatlantic market remained extremely dynamic,” said Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE.

However, the ACI noted an important discrepancy between the so-called EU+ market (including the EU, EEA, Switzerland, and the UK) and countries elsewhere in Europe. While the first group expanded by 4.1% in March (up from 3.9% in February), the second group only grew by 2.6% compared to the same month in 2025 (down from 5.9% in February).

Within the EU+ market, Slovakia (130.7%), Slovenia (17%), Denmark (13.8%), Malta (12.5%), and Croatia (10.8%) were the strongest growers in terms of passenger traffic performance. Outside the EU+, those with the best results were North Macedonia (36.3%), Moldova (25.3%), Bosnia & Herzegovina (21.3%), Uzbekistan (15.9%), Türkiye, and Serbia (11.3%). 

Some side notes on the growth

“Looking at the peak Summer months ahead of us, we do not – for now – expect a contraction of passenger volumes, unless we end up facing significant jet fuel shortages. Middle Eastern airlines are now restoring their European network while European ones have only made limited capacity adjustments – reflecting the protection afforded by fuel-cost hedging strategies and the continued resilience of demand. However, past the peak Summer months, the traffic outlook is effectively a black box for the industry. It all hinges on geopolitics and the fallout of the oil crisis – with the prospect of a cost-of-living shock testing demand resilience,” Olivier Jankovec added.

ACI’s report also mentions the contrasted case of small airports, defined as those welcoming fewer than 1 million annual passengers. Although the airport category achieved the best passenger traffic performance overall with an increase of 8.9% compared to March 2025, small airports’ passenger volumes are still far below (-32.1%) the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Córdoba ODB (4007.4%), Bucharest BBU (530.1%%), Vaxjo VXO (452.5%), Jönköping JKG (400.5%), and Stockholm BMA (286.4%) were the small airports reporting the most dynamic growth in passenger traffic compared to March 2025.

Since 10 April 2026, the European Union has officially adopted its new Entry/Exit System (EES). Eliminating the need for manual passport stamping at borders, the system gathers biometric data from non-European, third-country arrivals to any of the 29 nations that are part of the Schengen Zone. A facial image, fingerprints, passport information, as well as entry and exit dates, are gathered upon arrival. The EES, which is completely free, applies to those without a residence permit or long-stay visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

However, although the EES had been in the making for a long time and even though everything was supposed to run smoothly by 10 April 2026, the system has been encountering several (practical) issues. Long queues have become a common sight at airports and other entry points to the Schengen Zone, even before the start of the high season.

Countries have therefore been known to adopt alternative strategies concerning the EES, even though the European Commission has not allowed its member states to do so. The only legal exception to the new system that has been included in the roll-out is the possibility to pause biometric collection for six-hour windows during exceptionally busy times, a flexibility that runs through July can be applied until September under certain conditions.

“There has been no change to the EES regulation. Indeed, the EES regulation foresees flexibilities and fallback procedures that Member States can rely on when needed,” a Commission spokesperson said in a statement.

However, countries are deciding to take action on their own initiative. In France, for example, the EES has not yet been implemented at the Port of Dover, nor has it been applied to car travellers taking the Eurotunnel. In Spain, airports are choosing to switch between EES and manual stamping. And Greece announced it would be dropping the EES for British travellers.

“We would like to inform you that within the framework of the implementation of the new ESS as of 10 April 2026, British passport holders are excluded from biometric registration at Greek border crossing points,” a statement published by the Embassy of Greece in London read.

Portugal and Italy continue EES

While reports previously suggested Italy and Portugal might be following in the footsteps of Greece, the European Commission has now officially denied those rumours.

“The Portuguese and Italian authorities confirmed that they do not intend to exempt any nationality,” the Commission stated.

Brits travelling to Portugal and Italy this summer should thus prepare themselves to undergo the biometric checks. Arriving on time at the airport is strongly advised, as long queues are to be expected over the busy summer season.

In January 2025, Lufthansa acquired a 41% minority stake in Italy’s ITA Airways, while the Italian government retained 59% of the airline. At the time, the deal included the right for Lufthansa to gradually increase its ownership over time.

On 12 May 2026, Lufthansa announced it would be exercising its option to acquire a majority stake in ITA Airways just one year after the initial deal. The second block of shares, which will give Lufthansa a 90% stake in the Italian carrier, will be acquired for €325 million from the Italian government. According to the group, its Supervisory Board approved the decision by the Lufthansa Executive Board at a meeting on 11 May 2026.

“Passengers already experience ITA Airways as an integrated part of the Lufthansa Group. With unified booking, sales, and fare systems, the Miles and More frequent flyer program, Star Alliance membership, and access to our global network of premium lounges. Integration is also progressing in the cargo business. Since last year, Lufthansa Cargo has been marketing ITA Airways’ cargo capacity, which alone corresponds to the additional capacity of three Boeing 777 freighters. In light of this success story, we decided to exercise our option to acquire an additional 49 percent stake as early as June of this year,” added Spohr.

Although the deal should take place in June 2026, the transaction is still subject to regulatory approvals. Both the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will need to agree, which means the transaction should close during the first quarter of 2027.

Once the matter has been approved, ITA Airways will become fully integrated into the Lufthansa Group, both organisationally and financially. The Italian government will keep 10% of ITA Airways’ shares, but it is not impossible that Lufthansa might be purchasing the remaining shares in the future, which would result in full ownership.

TAP Air Portugal

At the moment of writing, Lufthansa is also competing with Air France-KLM to purchase a 49.9% minority share in TAP Air Portugal. Given the upcoming ITA Airways purchase, however, Air France-KLM’s chances of taking a stake in TAP Air Portugal might have just improved. Previously, EU regulators already raised concerns about competition on intra-European, transatlantic, and South American routes, while the Portuguese authorities want Lisbon to remain a central, global hub.

Despite his already impressive track record, Yannick Alléno is not about to slow down.

What started off as a normal cruise on 1 April 2026, carrying 147 passengers and crew from 23 countries, has quickly turned into a global headliner and health concern. Over the course of a few weeks, the MV Hondius – which set out from Argentina – has become the scene of a deadly hantavirus outbreak.

After the first hantavirus cases had been confirmed, the ship first anchored off Cape Verde before heading to Tenerife in order to start evacuating the remaining passengers. Spanish health minister Monica Garcia Gomez, interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and minister for territorial policy Angel Victor Torres Pérez, as well as the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, supervised the delicate operation when the ship arrived on 10 May 2026.

Approximately two days later, on the night of 11 on 12 May 2026, the last evacuees arrived in the Netherlands. The remaining passengers – four Australians, one Briton, and one New Zealander  – and the crew members – 17 Filipinos, a Dutch national, and a German – will stay at a quarantine facility near the Eindhoven airbase before being repatriated to their respective countries.

However, the MV Hondius still had people on board when it left Tenerife. 25 crew members and two medical staff will accompany the ship to Rotterdam. Upon its arrival – expected on Sunday 17 May 2026 – the vessel will be disinfected, and those remaining on board will most likely undergo a quarantine procedure before being repatriated. The WHO has recommended 42 days of isolation for those leaving the MV Hondius.

“Mission accomplished. Between yesterday and today, we have evacuated the 125 passengers and crew members from 23 countries, who have either already returned home or are in the process of being repatriated. The ship, as you can see, has just weighed anchor. It left the port today at 7:00 pm,” said Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia Gomez in Tenerife.

Three new cases

Since the evacuations started, three new cases have been detected. Aside from the three passengers who died due to the virus, this brings the total number of confirmed patients to seven, while an eighth case has been listed as ‘probable’ by the World Health Organization.

One of the five French nationals who were on the ship is among those to have tested positive. The woman started to feel unwell on Sunday evening, 10 May, according to Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. In Spain, one of the fourteen evacuees has tested positive for the hantavirus.

The last confirmed case concerns an American passenger. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, the patient tested positive at a biochemical unit in Nebraska and is being monitored alongside fifteen others at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

“We had a CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] team at Tenerife. We had aeroplanes ready to take the patients. We have this under control, and we’re not worried about it,” commented Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy Jr on the situation.

Although the World Health Organization’s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has reassured passengers aboard by stating that the risk of another pandemic is low, the WHO has recommended 42 days of isolation for those leaving the MV Hondius. The U.S., however, has decided not to follow its guidelines, which “may have risks,” according to the director general.

The U.S.-Israel war on Iran has had a big impact on the global tourism sector. Aside from tourists avoiding the region, the conflict has also caused numerous flight cancellations, reroutings, and a (jet) fuel crisis. As fuel represents a considerable part of an airline’s operating costs, the jet fuel crisis has led to cancellations and price increases. 

“Fuel accounts for a significant proportion of air carriers’ costs and is well known to be subject to considerable price volatility. For this reason, many carriers hedge against the risks of fuel price volatility. When fuel costs are high for longer periods, the additional cost is eventually passed through into higher air fares. Freedom of pricing under the Air Services Regulation allows airlines to adjust prices prior to selling a ticket to reflect changes in their operating costs, and to compete on that basis. Some carriers, such as KLM and Lufthansa, have responded to the rising costs by cancelling less-profitable flights. Over the next few months, global flight schedules will therefore be reduced. In that regard, the Commission reminds travellers that carriers are required to pay compensation for cancellations less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, unless the passenger was offered re-routing in good time.

“However, the operating air carrier can be exempted from paying compensation subject to proving that the cancellation is caused by “extraordinary circumstances” which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. The Commission is of the view that a local fuel shortage preventing the operation of a flight may be considered an “extraordinary circumstance”. However, cancellations caused by exceptionally high fuel prices, as opposed to local fuel shortages, cannot be considered as constituting “extraordinary circumstances”,” the notice specifies.

No post ticket sales fuel surcharges

Moreover, in its document, the European Commission specifically bans airlines from adding fuel surcharges post ticket sales.

“The rules on transparent pricing of air tickets in Regulation (EC) No 1008/200815 require that the final ticket price including all unavoidable and foreseeable price elements must be displayed at all times when offering or publishing air fares to the general public. As this obligation applies explicitly to the final ticket price to be paid, any retroactive change of the price is excluded,” the Commission explains.

The ban comes at a moment when Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea has been charging passengers fuel surcharges, amounting to up to €14.00, for weeks. The airline explained the move as a ‘Fair Travel Promise’ policy in its latest terms and conditions – after reviewing fuel market prices seven days before a flight departure, passengers are either charged a surplus or reimbursed in case of a jet fuel price drop.

“The legality of our system has been confirmed by three independent law firms specialising in air transport and consumer law. The measure is transparent, it is temporary, and it works both ways (up or down),” Gilles Gosselin, Volotea’s country manager for France, said about the measure in an interview with Agence France-Presse.

Spanish consumer protection organisation Facua has been calling the measure unlawful and has started an investigation into the mandatory fee. The European Commission now seems to agree with that position.

“She drank Campari soda, he drank an Old Fashioned, and they ate olives while playing cards. She was very sweet and they seemed like a normal couple. A few people asked her for a picture. We asked her if it bothered her and she said no, she was used to it — not a problem,” Patrick Lanzino, manager of the Colletti bar in Palermo, one of the couple’s culinary stops in the city, told The Times.

While enjoying their time off, the couple apparently fell in love with Sicily and decided to organise their wedding in Palermo.

“This marriage will be a message to Palermo that people love the city’s beauty, despite its problems in the past. Something stayed with this couple after their visit, which is why they are coming back,” Lanzino commented.

A potential wedding location

Rumours about the celebrity wedding took off when the Italian newspaper Giornale di Sicilia wrote  about a wedding planner being hard at work to organise a weekend of celebrations from 5 to 7 September 2026. Yet another Italians news outlet, La Repubblica, promptly named it “the wedding of the year” and despite a lack of comment by the couple, they even got a honeymoon invite from Luca Beraldo, the mayor of Celleno, a medieval village in Lazio.

Since those first reports, people have been busy speculating about the potential details of the wedding. Allegedly, the couple has hired wedding planner Alessandra Grillo to organise the event, while the famous Art Nouveau hotel Villa Igiea would act as the duo’s headquarters. The 19^th-century palazzo features lavish interiors, sea views, and a range of on-site eating options.

If Dua Lipa and Callum Turner will actually be getting married in Palermo and if so, how precisely, only time will tell.
