Here, I am going to share 10 places you could visit to take great pictures in Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal. With an estimated population of 240,000 citizens, Porto has many impressive buildings, monuments, and churches to visit. The food and wine are delicious, the weather is pleasant all year round, and even if there are a lot of tourists, the city is still enjoyable with plenty of photo opportunities, including some more hidden away.

1. Igreja de Santo Ildefonso

The Igreja de Santo Ildefonso is an eighteenth-century church in Porto located near Batalha Square. This is one of the famous sights in the city and very Instagrammable thanks to the architecture and colour of this beautiful church.

2. Livraria Lello

The Lello Bookstore, also known as Livraria Lello & Irmão and Livraria Chardron, is one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal and frequently rated among the top bookstores in the world. This shop inspired Flourish and Blotts and the Hogwarts Library, as J.K. Rowling lived in Porto during the early nineties. Because of the popularity of this place, you need to wait in the queue to visit, but I am sure you will find the original touch to make your pictures unique and ready to be liked on your Instagram!

3. Igreja Capela das Almas

Known as the Chapel of Souls and Chapel of Santa Catarina, this beautiful church is located in the civil parish of Santo Ildefonso of Porto. The building was constructed in the eighteenth century and is popular with photographers, with many posing and taking pictures from outside the beautiful building. The external walls are covered with blue-white ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, which depict scenes from the lives of saints.

4. Ribeira

The Ribeira district is one of the oldest and most picturesque neighbourhoods in Porto. Located along the Douro River, it features colourful buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and a lively atmosphere. ]]> Turkish Cuisine Week has been celebrated between 21 and 27 May since 2022. Since its inception and for the third year, the Permanent Delegation of Türkiye to the EU, with the support of the İzmir Commodity Exchange, has organized a dinner in Brussels to mark the occasion.

The Turkish Cuisine Week was established under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye to promote the hidden gems of Turkish tastes. Each year, the events are themed around a specific region and concept. As the world attaches more importance to sustainability and reducing food waste, this year’s theme is dedicated to Aegean Cuisine, which for centuries has been a symbol of ancient traditions that form the foundations of sustainability and the circular economy.

The event in Brussels, on 27 May, showcased the exquisite flavours of the Aegean region under the guidance of Michelin Star Chef Osman Sezener, who has been working on establishing Urla as a prime gastronomy destination in the Aegean region. These events represent an opportunity for cultural exchange and culinary exploration, celebrating the diversity and richness of Turkish food culture.

“The Turkish Cuisine Week is an excellent opportunity to share our vibrant culinary traditions with our friends in the rest of Europe and in EU circles”, said Ambassador Faruk Kaymakci, the Permanent Delegate of Türkiye to the EU. “We are proud to present the flavours of the Aegean region, which is known for its rich, healthy and delicious cuisine. One of the interesting contributions of the Turkish membership to the EU will also be rich, colourful, tasty and sustainable cuisine as well as food safety.”

The head of the Izmir Commodity Exchange Delegation, Deputy President Mr. Ercan Korkmaz mentioned the traditional aspects of the Aegean cuisine and the natural heritage supporting the sustainability and circular economy dimension.

1. Mud

The Boryeong Mud Festival is an annual event that takes place during the summer in Boryeong, a town around 200 km south of Seoul, South Korea. You can enjoy the mud pool, mud slides, mud prison, and mud skiing competitions, with the most interesting activities being the mud wrestling and mud fireworks. Yes, it is all related to mud!

2. Baby jumping

This event takes place in the small town of Castrillo de Murcia, Spain. In this festival, a man dressed as the devil jumps over babies. This an old tradition that exists since 1620. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the festival, but it is believed to cleanse the babies of original sin.

3. Colour-throwing

Holi is also known as the “festival of spring”, the “festival of colours”, and the “festival of love”. It is a popular ancient Hindu festival originally from India but today this festival has also spread to other regions of Asia and parts of the Western world through the diaspora from the Indian subcontinent. The festival is a symbol of the triumph of good over evil.

4. Monkey buffet

In Thailand there is an entire festival dedicated to feeding monkeys. Every year, on the last Sunday of November, people in Lapbury, the oldest city of Thailand, prepare a huge banquet for the monkeys who live in the area. Obviously the monkeys are very happy with this, they probably wonder why this festival doesn’t take place every day.

5. Orange fight

Every year, the citizens of the medieval town of Ivrea, in Italy, remember their liberation with the Battle of the Oranges. People gather in the main square to throw oranges at each other, and it is the biggest food fight in Italy.

6. Vikings

This is the biggest fire festival in Europe and sees men from the Shetland region of Scotland dress as Vikings and set things on fire. The festival is held annually from January to March to celebrate the end of the Yule season, with the largest festival held in Lerwick, Shetland’s capital. This involves a procession of up to a thousand men who march through the streets of Lerwick on the last Tuesday of January.

7. Naked

Every year, usually in the summer or winter, the Hadaka Matsuri or Naked Festival is held in dozens of cities across Japan. The most popular place to celebrate this event is Saidai-ji Eyo Hadaka Matsuri, in Okayama, where the festival originated over 500 years ago. Every year, over 9,000 men participate in this festival in hopes of gaining luck for the entire year.

8. Floating lanterns

The Lantern Floating Festival is held every year during Memorial Day on Ala Moana Beach in Hawaii. Thousands of people gather on the beach and float lanterns at sunset with messages for loved ones they have lost, generating collective hope towards the future.

9. Tomato fight

La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, in the east of Spain 30 kilometres from the Mediterranean. During this festival participants throw tomatoes as part of a giant tomato fight. The reason for painting the town in red with tonnes of the juicy fruit? Pure, unadulterated enjoyment. Amazing, isn’t it?

10. Masks

The Buso Festival of The Busójárás is an annual celebration of the Šokci living in the town of Mohács, Hungary. The event begins at the end of the Carnival season and ends the day before Ash Wednesday. The celebration features Busós (people wearing traditional masks) and includes folk music, masquerading, parades, and dancing. These traditional festivities were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

However, there are varying ideas about who this figure was and how he became associated with the February celebration, a month that had long been linked to romance.

There are also different theories as to why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14 February. Some claim the date commemorates the anniversary of Saint Valentine’s death or burial, believed to have occurred around AD 270. Others suggest that the Christian Church placed Saint Valentine’s feast day on this date in an effort to ‘Christianise’ the pagan festival of Lupercalia.

Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide. Many films are directly or indirectly linked to this theme, so here are my favourite Valentine’s Day movies that are guaranteed to make you smile, laugh and cry.

1. The Notebook

Based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook is the kind of film you can watch over and over again. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s, the film is filled with passion, drama, whirlwind romance and enduring love. You may want to keep a box of tissues nearby.

2. Romeo and Juliet

It would be impossible to talk about Valentine’s Day without mentioning Romeo and Juliet. This modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as two teenagers who fall in love despite belonging to feuding families. Many versions of the story exist, but this one stands out and is well worth watching on Valentine’s Day.

3. Bridget Jones’s Dairy

Renée Zellweger plays a 32-year-old single English woman who documents her life in a diary, focusing on the things she hopes will change. Her life is turned upside down when two charming men enter it, played by Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. This love triangle has become one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time.

4. Pretty Woman

A classic romantic film from the 1990s, Pretty Woman is often described as a modern Cinderella story. It follows the romance between a wealthy and powerful businessman, played by Richard Gere, and an escort, portrayed by Julia Roberts. The film is also remembered for its iconic soundtrack, including It Must Have Been Love by Roxette.

5. Titanic

This epic love story brings together two people from very different backgrounds: a wealthy young woman and a penniless artist. Their romance unfolds aboard the RMS Titanic. 8. Love Actually

Written and directed by Richard Curtis, Love Actually explores different forms of love through ten interconnected stories. Although set in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the film has become a Valentine’s Day favourite thanks to its heartfelt moments, humour and emotional depth.

9. Me Before You

Based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, Me Before You is set in the United Kingdom and features several historic locations. The story follows a young woman from a small town who forms an unexpected bond with a man left paralysed after an accident. It is a touching and emotional love story.

10. Ever After

Ever After offers a fresh take on the Cinderella story. Inspired by the classic fairy tale, this romantic drama is set in 16th-century France and follows a young woman living under the cruelty of her stepmother and stepsisters. Ultimately, she finds love and her own version of a happy ending.

4. Pitt Rivers Museum, England

This museum is located not far from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and is an incredible place to visit. You can find a bizarre display of real tsantsas, or shrunken heads, from the upper Amazon region between Peru and Ecuador, as well as all sorts of weird and curious displays.

5. Clown Museum Leipzig, Germany

Some people think clowns are hilarious, others are terrified of them. If you’re one of the latter maybe avoid this museum! Located in Leipzig, Germany, the museum houses more than 3,000 clown figures all in different sizes and materials. The collection is made up of clowns from all around the world and also a huge archive of newspaper articles, photos, film footage, and 350 circus posters related to clown entertainment.

6. Catacombe dei Cappuccini, Italy

Catacombe dei Cappuccini is a burial catacomb in Palermo, Italy. A long time ago this place was a cemetery and it has the largest collection of mummified bodies in the world. The most famous among them is the mummy of a little girl named Rosalia Lombardo who died on 6 December 1920.

7. Hair Museum, Türkiye

Perhaps one of the strangest museums in the world, the Hair Museum is located in Avanos, Türkiye, and houses thousands of hairs from around the world. The story began when Galip Körükçü, the owner of Chez Galip, a pottery shop, moved to Avanos and was separated from his girlfriend. In order to remind himself of her, he asked her to give him something that he will remember forever, and she gave him a lock of her hair. Some time later the story spread and more and more people started donating their hair.

Froggyland in Split, Croatia, exhibits hundreds of stuffed frogs in all sorts human-like scenarios. Besides the well thought out scenarios, the displays are accompanied by witty captions, making the experience that much more entertaining.

The Mütter Museum is a medical museum located in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It has huge collections of skeletons, including the tallest skeleton on display in the US. 10. Siriraj Medical Museum, Thailand

The Siriraj Medical Museum, nicknamed the Museum of Death, is a medical museum in Bangkok, Thailand, comprised of six smaller museums. Madeira is a well-known tourist destination in Portugal, especially during the winter. It is located close to Morocco and the Canary Islands. The nice location, makes the island a perfect place to visit and enjoy the sun. Why not go to Madeira over the Christmas holiday period to visit the market, maybe try the local food and drink fresh juice while just wearing a T-shirt? And if you have time you can still go to the beach.

2. Limassol, Cyprus

Average temperature: 19° to 20°C

This place has a subtropical climate, which means you can enjoy mild winter on the coast but also you can see some snow in the Troodos Mountains. Limassol is very popular for tourist destinations not only during the summer but also in winter. A nice place to have a festive end of the year.

3. Malaga, Spain

In the Canary Islands you can enjoy an average temperature of 20° to 22°C in the winter. There are a lot of nice places to sightsee. During the Wintertime, you can visit Tenerife, Grand Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.  Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses.

5. Alicante, Spain

In winter, Alicante has mild and warm temperatures 17° to 18°C. Daily variations in temperature are generally small because of the stabilizing influence of the sea. You can stay on the beaches with a nice view of the mountain and you can visit some nice parks. Of course, you need to taste the delicious food: paella.

6. Malta

With an average temperature during the winter of 16° to 19°C, you can enjoy a beautiful wither period. These temperatures are just perfect to visit this beautiful island and the castles and plenty of historical monuments like megalithic temples which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.

7. Sicily, Italy

Of course, in winter you need to go to Sicily with an average temperature of 16-18°C, this is just perfect to visit this beautiful place and drink some tasty wine without the problem of it being too hot. 8. Crete, Greece

Crete is certainly a nice place to visit in winter. With an average temperature of 15 to 17 °C, it is not too hot to be out and about. 1. Vik Beach, Iceland

Vik Beach is located in the village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland. The black sand comes from the hot lava thousand years ago that flowed into the chilly waters of the ocean, and cause the extreme temperature difference causing it to harden in tiny fragments that washed ashore. Lovely when the sun is shining and the sky is blue, but it’s not so fun when its raining. However there are some waterparks you can enjoy in every season and which make for the perfect day out. Europe has some great indoor waterparks, so here are 5 of the best indoor waterparks in Europe.

1. Tropical Islands Resort, Germany

This tropical waterpark is located in the former Brand-Briesen Airfield in Halbe, Germany, 50 kilometres from the southern boundary of Berlin. The tropical dome is a swimming pool complex, housing Germany’s highest waterslide tower, a tropical sea, and a lagoon and the resort, and has a world record for the largest indoor waterpark. With a a maximum capacity of 8,200 visitors a day, it is also the fourth-largest building in the world by usable volume. Besides all of that the dome houses a tropical rain forest home to around 50,000 plants with a one-kilometre trail winding its way through, so you’ll really feel like you’re and actual jungle.

2. Aquadome Billund, Denmark

Aquadome Billund is a family park with twisting water slides, a lazy river & artificial waves, plus a pool for toddlers. Located in Lalandia in Billund, Denmark, this resort has many attractions and the Lalandia Aquadome is Scandinavia’s largest waterpark, measuring an impressive 10,000 m². The water slides include Tornado which uses 4-person dinghy’s, Octopus Racers featuring head-first racing, and 102-metre Twister. There is also plenty of greenery around the buildings where children can play and which adds to the scenery and atmosphere of the place.

3. Suntago Waterpark, Poland

You can find this amusement and leisure park in central Poland, in Wręcza, Żyrardów County, about 50 kilometres southwest of the capital Warsaw. With its 18 pools, 32 slides, 10 saunas and luxury spas, it makes the perfect place for a wonderful day out!

4. Aqualibi, Belgium

Aqualibi is an indoor waterpark featuring both high-speed and gentle water slides, a wave pool and a kids zone. Located just next to Walibi theme park in Wavre, close to Brussels, Belgium, this place is great for a visit both with and without children.
